Thanks. I remember the same at Bristol and UoM last year - and many courses, e.g. Economics, don't appear in clearing at UoM at all and so are presumably full. Really interesting how different the clearing vacancies are between universities.

Some unis have been publishing grades and then withdrawing them which has got a bit confusing!

So can I look at Bristol and see if they have lowerd grades for DD ?

If a course at X is offered in clearing at BBB and a DC has a firm offer of AAB from X they can be reasonably confident (but not absolutely certain) they will make it into X even if they get BBB.

However whilst Bristol is listing available courses they don't appear to have dropped grades suggesting that their firm applicants won't get much leeway, although there might be some.

A very long time ago indeed when I went to university, the university I went to had around 95% UK undergraduates.

Today, the university has grown massively and has around five times the number of undergraduates (although it has absorbed some smaller institutions over the years, so the numbers aren't directly comparable).

Of these undergraduates, around 46% are UK, 8% EU and 46% international undergraduates being charged the full international fees.

Around half of all international undergraduates at this university are from China. The next two biggest locations are Hong Kong and the USA.

University education has changed very noticeably over the last few decades.

Lancaster University's clearing grades are now on their website Quite a few substantial grade drops. My daughter's choice of Psychology as her insurance has dropped from AAB to BCC

Law at BBC could be a tempter if anyone's DC misses their Law offer tomorrow. English and History at CCC is a bit of a "wowser".

However, these vacancies may be for people 'trading up' because not enough people have hit their offer and Bristol doesn't want to lower the grade requirement

@RayneDance they did but then took it off and said they will update it tomorrow morning. Seems to be back on now but DC's course isn't listed. They don't tend to go into clearing but let's see what happens tomorrow. Quite a few of the universities are publishing their clearing grades today but some will wait until the UCAS update tomorrow at 8 am.

Op when you talk of phone work tomorrow is this literally calling up uni clearing numbers ?

For a subject area that I know a little about and have recruited for in the past, one of the universities we used to recruit from was Lancaster.

Having a quick look at that link did surprise me somewhat.

The standard offer from Lancaster for a course like MORSE was typically AAA. But I notice that in clearing the offer is BBC.

That is a huge reduction. Lancaster really do seem to have been hit quite hard if they're now offering BBC.

I can only guess that perhaps some other universities (eg Warwick) have maybe been softening their offers slightly which might have led to this as a knock on effect.

Typically, Warwick don't usually ever appear in clearing for MORSE. Could something odd be happening this year?

Yes, if it wouldn't upset your DD you could have a look at the courses coming through in Clearing to see if any would be an acceptable (or maybe even better!) alternative to her firm and insurance.

Then if there is a disappointment tomorrow you can be on the phone right away to secure one of the places.

It depends on the individual, some parents report their DCs don't want to even consider the possibility of a slip-up, others feel better knowing there's a good option even if they do have a disappointment.

Lancaster does seem to be struggling a bit. It's really dialled down its MFL offer. Lancaster is popular on MN but I do wonder whether its non RG status affects it. In the last 5 or so years, I hear students discount non RG unis much more than they used to (standard not especially aspirational comprehensive). Their marketing has really worked. I have had to give several students a thorough talking to about Bath's social science and maths degrees!

Does anyone know how this compares to last year? More flexible grades or about the same? From my own records of last year, it appears that Lancaster is a grade lower than last year for History BA. Birmingham, Leeds and Loughborough appear to have the same clearing grades. Warwick hasn't published their grades yet unfortunately. Bristol was not in clearing last year and so far it appears they are not again, probably because they prefer to be more lenient with those not quite meeting their grades rather than accept clearing applicants.

@Another2Cats is MORSE in clearing at Warwick? Can only see that they say they will update their website tomorrow morning but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

There's apparently some very bitter feelings amongst middle/lower ranking unis about higher rankers using Clearing to put bums on seats at the expense of everyone else.

I have no knowledge of this year at all. That's why I posed it as a question.

Yes the grade reductions at Lancaster are horrific. Maths from AAA to BBB. That’s a completely different level to teach at. (The odd exception seems to be Geography - is it particularly known for geography?)

Other unis (outside the obvious) who haven’t publically reduced their grades or not by much, will have massively over-offered and will be hoping/expecting/their algorithms tell them, that they will be able to accept firm offer holders with reduced grades.

But the big grade drops at somewhere like Lancaster are very bad news for the post 92 unis.
