Apologies if this is a daft question, but what happens if you’ve had an offer for, say ABB, but the course is now in clearing for BBB, will they let you in if you get BBB?

Apparently they're not obliged to but it's hard to see why they wouldn't, in practice.

I think various people working in unis posting on here have said that the unis would rather not go into clearing if they can avoid it so I suspect they'd be accepted. No guarantees obviously.

I work in uni admissions and, yes, this is largely correct but not guaranteed.

Last year I had plenty of pupils who missed a grade but still got their place. The universities have a couple of days of knowing the pupils grades before the pupils get them meaning they can work out their offer numbers and be less likely to have to go into clearing

Maths and Sport Science or Maths and Econ at ABC seem like absolute steals

I agree! My son has Loughborough as his insurance for maths with economics. His offer was AAA (or A⭐ AB). So seeing these clearing grades has made him (or me!) much more relaxed. (He already has the A in maths).
Last year the clearing grade was ABB (A in maths) so it's fallen again.

Oh thank god. I actually started crying when I saw DS2 AAB insurance choice course at Loughborough in clearing at BBB. Ive been awake since 4 worrying about him. Surely that's a good sign. He's had such a rough couple of years and has major surgery on Monday, please let him at least not have to do clearing.

As other people have said it's not legally guaranteed but I can't see what reason a uni would have to turn down an insurance candidate with these grades and accept a Clearing applicant.

At the very least they might be worried about all the annoyed parents ringing them asking for an explanation!

Best wishes to your DS for the results and the surgery. I have a DD with an inflammatory arthritis (she's 21) - it's so tough to find the balance between being supportive and recognising she's no longer a child I can order about!

Thank you and yes, totally get it. Im actually glad he didnt listen to me as he was debating for ages between Lboro and Exeter (which I favoured for him) as insurance choice and Exeter is now saying no courses in clearing 😬

How do you think he would fare if he got ABC or BBC (lot of time off for illness so difficult to predict) - are published clearing grades (BBB) the hard floor for universities or would already insured candidates get a tiny bit more leeway when filling course and before going to clearing?

My instinct would be that they would prefer to get the ABC student in the bag rather than rely on Clearing but I don't know for sure! Maybe some of the helpful Admissions people who contribute to these threads would know.

I think Exeter are saying their vacancies will re-open at 8am Thursday.

Honestly, I think most students who put in the phone work on Thursday will end up with something OK. The student I referenced earlier from last year with an Oxford offer and CCC I seem to remember ended up at York - which is a perfectly good uni!

hi there, just to clarify, the number of international students coming (or not) does not imply that universities will take in more home students. Financially it does not make sense and legally, the number of CAS issued to international candidates is capped (with universities fined if they go over the number with huge consequences). They could of course, take more home students - but that's not based on whether internationals come or not.

In terms of whether published clearing grades of BBB will allow a C grade to get in - this happened to friends of ours. Child received ABC and the offer was BBB. Theoretically, the UCAS points add up, but they were still rejected. Turns out that the C was the issue for that institution/subject and their profile was considered in the run up to the release (remember universities have the grades about a week before the release), and ultimately rejected. This sounds like our friend was close and perhaps compared to the others in the pile, was just slightly lower than the others.

Regardless, they are very happy where they are now, and thriving, top 10% in the class, and glad of their final choice

Yes it was - a few of of the unis (Exeter and Southampton as well) that had grades earlier have removed them - presumably to reinstate them either this evening or tomorrow morning?

I don't remember History standing out as being much lower than their normal offer but of course that could all change as they now know who's made their firms.

It's a real shame they don't switch to a post-grades system - while "trading up" is completely rational it very much favours students with family/schools in the know.

IIRC, Notts does this where two subjects are very pertinent (e.g. Physics - Maths and Physics need the high grade, they don't care as much about the third)

I totally get that but surely the unis have to adjust their cap number ratios for home/international students in conjunction with DoE, or whoever, eventually if the applicant numbers from international students are persistently falling (as is anecdotally the case?).

Either way, there definitely seems to be less clearing spaces advertised as for international students only than when my eldest went 4 years ago - though I guess we're not in the thick of it yet.

And yes good luck to everyone and try not to stress too much, myself included. Eldest dropped 2 grades 4 years ago and still got into first choice, had a great time, has just graduated and starts graduate job next month. It can all work out!
