Some students are holding very high offers. Bristol has philosophy at AAA so it may be attractive to a a student who has missed a PPE offer from Oxbridge/Durham which needed A* for example.

I was going to ask that. Where is the duping?

You would be surprised by the number of people ( including A level students ) who assume that RG means that all the courses are better than at a so called non RG.

I thought RG was a self selecting group and many good uni like bath are not RG

Frankly, I am perennially unsurprised by what people (in general) do and don't assume.

CUG ranks So'ton as 24th in economics this year, up 2 places from last year. If an A level student can't read a table to see that there are non RG universities (Bath, for one) ranked consistently higher for this subject, then perhaps they need to brush up their analytical skills before starting an economics course!

A lot of people think this, without doubt. But they are chasing status and have not been duped.

I got offers from all of them except Sheffield.

My DD is loving it at Lancaster and a lot of the people she's met there are from the north west or Midlands so I agree with a pp, it's less appealing to both people from the south and people who want the big city experience.

I'm always intrigued by clearing, it gives a real insight into which subjects are growing in popularity at certain unis (as a pp said Geography needing an A at Lancaster whilst at York it seems to be more the English subjects requiring it, weird).

But I think we should also remember that MN children always seem to be predicted As, A stars, and Bs and back in the real world Bs and Cs are far more common.

It absolutely happens. The big universities will often allow offer holders in who've dropped 1-2 or even 3 grades rather than end up looking desperate offering courses in clearing, and it does eat into the pool of students the mid tier unis used to mop up. Some of the big unis have expanded dramatically in the last 20 years and for sure some of the students attending them would have been mid-tier candidates back when unis had caps on places 20+ years ago.

Yes they can get offers in clearing from 8am i don't think there is an end deadline. Then pick one of their clearing offers to enter onto UCAS (can't remember the exact time assume that it's 2pm as you said). I thinks it's to give the students a bit of thinking time.
Went through this 3 years ago with DS1 who missed both offers, and the clearing process did work smoothly.

@Lampzade well according to the new uni guide Bristol has skipped to 17 ! That's quite a fall .

Where a uni in clearing offers both an online form or a telephone no to call, is the telephone the better option?

If your YP phones they get to speak to a human straight away and answer any questions. An online form is less personal and needs someone to look at it, which could take longer.

Not sure on his friends grades yet as is a bit upset but will pass on BHam

Bristol let DD in .she went down a grade on her chosen subject by quite a margin ! However she also got an a star on another subject .

Bristol have philosophy in clearing but AAA. York ABB. Exeter BCC.
