Oh only need one offer ......

Hang in there everyone. It will be over soon.

Justlikingit · 20/01/2025 19:08

@Optimum19 big hugs to your daughter. She should keep her positive vibes going. Look forward with hope…

ipredictariot5 · 21/01/2025 17:23

Is anyone’s DC waiting for Bristol on hold?

CopingHagen · 21/01/2025 17:31

Yes @ipredictariot5, still on hold here

ipredictariot5 · 21/01/2025 17:33

there does not seem to be much traffic on TSR - last one said interview for 3050 my DD is 2970 and cannot get sense at all of likely cut off this year - can you ?

CopingHagen · 21/01/2025 18:19

DC seemed to think no invites had gone to anyone below 3k as yet, but this was always the dodgy one with their UCAT (v similar to your DD)

Ib1234567 · 21/01/2025 19:18

Bristol is doing different this year as it just interviewed contextual in December , the interviews for highest ucat are in last week of January . maybe they will call next batch this next two weeks .

My DD has just been rejected hope yours has better luck x

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2025 14:19

@ipredictariot5 insane cut off. At some point Bristol will need to try something different

WeCantGoOverIt · 22/01/2025 14:48

It does come back to - how good is UCAT really at predicting if someone will be a good doctor? Or even pass their degree well? We know UCAT dropped the AR section for next year because they didn’t think it predictive (or at least it didn’t add to the predictive power of the rest of the test as maybe strongly correlated with those results). They can’t really do more with academic results as there is too much variation between offer at different schools. UCAT is easy for universities.

Optimum19 · 22/01/2025 15:45

Sorry to hear that @ipredictariot5 Hope your DD isn't taking it too hard.
Hopefully better news coming in the next few weeks.

Justlikingit · 22/01/2025 16:11

@ipredictariot5 wishing your DD, the best with her other options. I agree that cut off is insane. UCAT really is to make life easier for the universities, can’t believe it’s predictive of a good medic.

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2025 16:26

Trouble is 90% of applicants would make a good doctor. So how do they choose ?

To be honest it's much better than applying to speciality training currently. Now that is a mess. Unfortunately many F2s facing unemployment in August 🤬

They shouldn’t be considering any foreign candidate until they have ruled out candidates with UK citizenship/residency. There may still be some at that point not considered up to the task but it shouldn’t be the case of all that money spent by the UK on training decent doctors is wasted.

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2025 16:43

@WeCantGoOverIt I agree. But for the current F2s they are dealing with nearly twice as many applicants as 2 years ago. And no one checks the 'evidence, so easy for people to lie (those registered with GMC would risk disciplinary action, but those who are not don't).

Sorry, I'm really angry today. Many amazing young doctors are devastated to not even get an interview. There are v few JCF jobs, no locums so the only option is abroad. Or leave medicine. It's all so v sad.

I really really hope that the cohort of 2025 do not face the same things in 8 years.

What evidence? Surely they are required to do basic immigration checks? Even landlords in England are required to do that. Or do you mean CVs? Surely a doctor should lose their post if found to have been dishonest on their CV?

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2025 17:26

@WeCantGoOverIt evidence they've been first author on publications, evidence if teaching, evidence of extra degrees. No one checks - it's all self certified. So they get more points and so get the interviews and therefore the jobs.

British doctors would be struck off, but IMGs can just quietly withdraw their application if anyone does check.

It's all mad. And v v sad. I've helped so many students become doctors to now watch them be unemployed.

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2025 17:36

For Paeds these scores are doubled. Needed 40/50 to just secure an interview. 55% chance of then getting a job.

IMT had 6174 applications to IMT in 2024. This year it's 8728.

2023 had 4292 applications.

Sorry, wrong place to vent. Your DCs are still excited about becoming a doctor. I'm currently a bit jaded by it all. I'll step away (& go pour a gin).

I feel your pain - I always wonder why no one considers what drives all our talented young doctors to Australia

CopingHagen · 22/01/2025 19:43

Sorry to hear that @ipredictariot5 , hope your DD is ok and best of luck to her with her other options
Haven't heard yet here, but not expecting interview as sub 3000
@mumsneedwine your posts are sobering in the extreme (but personally am grateful for the insights, thank you)

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2025 20:30

@CopingHagen sorry. Been a tough few weeks watching ex students not get into training. And I'm about to watch my own DD do the same v likely. She already has a job lined up in Australia. Unemployment after 7 years slog is not an option for her.

Let's hope sense is seen v v soon.

sproutsandparsnips · 22/01/2025 21:46

I work with FY1s and they were telling me of the insane way those jobs are allocated!
DS had Liverpool interview today, first one. Went ok he thought but hard to tell. Cardiff on Friday.
@ipredictariot5 he had outright rejection from Exeter so DD is not alone, and to be fair it was obvious that it was going to happen but he wouldn't listen.......

maybemedmum · 23/01/2025 08:27

Sorry to hear about Bristol, @ipredictariot5. Their UCAT bar is getting crazily high. Hope she's not too disheartened. On to the next one...

The training system for FY1/2 sounds so awful at the moment, I think we have to believe it will have changed by the time it's relevant for our kids. Perhaps that's naive. And certainly no help to @mumsneedwine's DD and the rest of their cohort who are being treated appallingly.

mumsneedwine · 23/01/2025 13:50

@maybemedmum training for F1:2s is bad. Speciality training is impossible to get into.
