Hi anyone else’s dc a little disappointed by their subject teachers references? Dc says one is very generic (I’ve not seen them!) despite the work and effort they’ve put in. Amazing PS (been told this by an external teacher, best they’ve seen out of 2000 applicants they’ve looked at!), 4 A*s predicted etc.
They’re quite nervous now. Course they’re applying to is very oversubscribed @ camb and they have the tmua to worry about next week.
The sixth form doesn’t have a history of oxbridge applications - could this hinder dc?

I didn’t see the reference, but my DC sat with the teacher supervising the application and read it on the screen. They were happy with it. The reason for showing it was because sometimes questions can arise from the content but it is not guaranteed to.

@UpperRoom I didn't even see my son's references. I would have thought the results to date, his predictions and his excellent PS will count for more. (And depending on the subject (my son is an engineering 3rd year at C) if he does get an interview, be prepared for no small talk and barely a question on the PS!)

Good luck!

We didn’t see it either

DS’s (Cambridge) general interview questions were based entirely on his PS. I don’t know how much the general interview matters and the format and importance probably varies between colleges. DS found his general interview helpful in settling his nerves/finding his voice before the subject interview.
DD on the other hand (Oxford) had no PS related questions but she was asked to justify her particular choice of A Level subjects.

Fugliest · 11/10/2024 21:34

but she was asked to justify her particular choice of A Level subjects.

@ofteninaspin did your DD have an unusual combination or was one of the A levels an outlier? Mine has an A level thats an outlier and I have wondered if it will be an issue.

HewasH2O · 12/10/2024 08:17

@Fugliest Mine took PPE with A levels in maths, history and (widely scorned) English Language. The first 2 are preferred for PPE. I don't believe anyone showed any interest in her A level choices. They did quiz her on her EPQ though.

BiancaBlank · 12/10/2024 16:29

DD3 got asked about a lot of things on her PS for her Oxford interview (history), but not about her slightly odd A-level choices (history, obscure humanity and a science). Though I don’t think it would have fazed her if they had.

I'm so sorry this is probably the wrong place I don't post much! Has everyone been given their dates for Oxford interviews yet? My daughter has not received one and is going around very sad, would be good to tell her bad news sooner. She applied for English.

BiancaBlank · 27/11/2024 18:50

@thefridgehaseyes There is an Oxbridge 2025 thread on here, which would be the place to look.
Though purely anecdotally, it seems most of the Oxford humanities haven’t sent interview invites yet. (Just bear in mind that they send rejections and invites out at the same time, so if she hasn’t heard anything, that will be the same for all applicants for her subject/college so no need to despair!)

Thank you! I found one oxbridge thread but it wasn't accepting new posts, sorry, I should have looked harder! Thanks for your kind & semi-reassuring reply!

we just started a new continued version of the Oxford entry 2025 thread
my DD hasn't had news of an interview yet either and there's at least one other parent in the same boat.

thank you so much! Will go and lurk...
