Can I join please. I am waiting (well my DD) on C for natural sciences. It’s going to be a very long two weeks wait, especially if she sees how her friends do tomorrow for Oxford. I know she is going to be devastated if she doesn’t get into C. Her other choices are Durham - no offer yet and she thinks it’s too far. UCL which she thinks is too expensive and too much of a burden on us financially (although we are trying to reassure her on that front). Exeter. Which she doesn’t want to go to (something about no dedicated chemistry department/course. I wasn’t quite sure on her logic on that). So C is the only one that ticks all the boxes for her ( and not because it’s Cambridge - but because of location and course contents). We both think the odds are against her, one good interview. One terrible interview and okish NSAA tests, averaging about 5.2 but higher on one chemistry.
I just want her to be happy.- but I don’t know what to say to her to make her happy, because the more likely reply on the 24th will be no.

I did like the comment that someone made about far more successful and happy people in the country than went to oxbridge. (Apologies for paraphrasing) and I will be collecting more of these over the next couple of weeks. I think though she will just want a hug - and like many others she has mocks that day (and 3 other girls who also applied to same course in her school so I don’t think she will be able to get away with not thinking about it)

good luck to all getting an answer tomorrow.

Redhotchillipeppers · 08/01/2024 18:42

@DSandDD congratulations on the Durham offer. Durham is the favourite for DS from the 4 offers he has received. Will only be trumped by C I think.

@Livingongin I joined MN after I came across this thread a couple of months ago. Have found it super informative and very supportive.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/01/2024 18:45

@Livingongin my dd is also waiting for C and natural sciences.

Maggiethecat · 08/01/2024 18:53

Wishing all your Dc the best for tomorrow!

Lightsabre · 08/01/2024 19:04

Does anyone have anything special planned to celebrate /commiserate tomorrow? I'm thinking to get ds his favourite takeaway (and maybe a little card to say well done for trying, proud of you).

Rollergirl11 · 08/01/2024 19:07

@Harumff and @DSandDD well done on the Durham offers! Can I ask which subject?

Revengeofthepangolins · 08/01/2024 19:08

Amused by the sudden Durham offer flurry (and jealous!)

Rollergirl11 · 08/01/2024 19:09

@Revengeofthepangolins same here!! 🥴😂

Aurea · 08/01/2024 19:10

I don't think the Durham offers a day before Oxford's is a new phenomenon. It happened in 2019 for my son (law).

Aurea · 08/01/2024 19:11

Good luck for all tomorrow!

Livingongin · 08/01/2024 19:15

@ShanghaiDiva I veer between thinking odds are better for NatSci as they take top 600 of 2400 entries, compared to a niche subject where they maybe take 20 of 60 applicants.

and then you hear the stories of people who didn’t do great in test and thought they flunked thr interview and then they get in.

i just want to be supportive but know I will say the wrong things and I know she has lots of other excellent options.
I shall be stocking up on gin!

RIPMatthewperry · 08/01/2024 19:38

@Lightsabre Sainsbury’s has a range of ‘proud of you’ cards. I realised when I got home (and having written on it) that the card might well be from a range of ‘coming out’ cards 🫤though these days Lord knows why you’d need to either announce it or a card, it isn’t the 80’s…? Still, it said the words proud etc so I just used that.

Goodgriefken · 08/01/2024 19:44

@Lightsabre I've decided we're having DS's favourite takeaway tomorrow whatever happens - either celebrating or commiserating.

Jaxx · 08/01/2024 19:50

Best of luck for everyone tomorrow!

Very happy for those with last minute offers from other universities today. Hoping for a Durham offer before the 24th, but even contextual and international offers for History to be rare this year.

WombatChocolate · 08/01/2024 19:55

Placemarking. And wishing everyone all the best for tomorrow. Hoping that for the majority of us that will be disappointed, we will be able to hold onto the fact that whilst it will be very raw for lots for a few days, they will move on pretty quickly and get over it. Hoping that within a short period they can be pragmatic about it and have a sense of pride at having tried and been short-listed and know that going through the process will have been useful. Realise many won’t be able to see that tomorrow, but it might help us as parents to know that the devastation and desolation some will feel tomorrow, will be short-lived and pass.

And of course there will be euphoric celebrations for some too. I hope those with good news feel able to absolutely celebrate at home, when the students often feel they have to contain their excitement at school/college as it wouldn’t thoughtful to show it whilst with those who might be disappointed or in contexts where hardly anyone else has applied. And I hope the rest of us can find it within us to be pleased for them too.

You have to be in-it to win-it and all our young people have put themselves in-it. That’s the thing to be proud of. Cakes for all tomorrow night, regardless!

lullubell · 08/01/2024 20:01

@WombatChocolate love this. Wise words!

Pleasealexa · 08/01/2024 20:10

Good luck to everyone for tomorrow..a colleagues son has applied to O so I am keeping everything crossed.

Harumff · 08/01/2024 20:24

@Rollergirl11 MFL - French and German specifically

Rollergirl11 · 08/01/2024 20:39

Thanks @Harumff. Just trying to work out if there are any English offers about yet!

@WombatChocolate - very wise and magnanimous!

It’s very hard to be happy for other children when our own are sad but we will all have been on either side of disappointment at some point. We’ve been on the happy side up to now.

They’ve all shown courage and determination - these qualities will take them far regardless of tomorrow’s results.

DSandDD · 08/01/2024 20:47

Spanish and Italian @Rollergirl11.

We have the favorite takeaway planned for tomorrow - as either celebratory/commiseratory!

AMuser · 08/01/2024 20:48

Good luck to all the children& parents tomorrow! Waiting on C here so feels like a long wait.

periodiclabel · 08/01/2024 21:05

Having been here twice before once successfully, once not ( and once myself but don’t remember how I felt the night before and my mum opened the offer letter while I was out failing my driving test) - rejection is upsetting once you’ve got this far but it honestly does not matter one jot down the line, “reject” dc is doing brilliantly and having far more fun than the “success”. O and C are just two universities in a country where we’re still lucky enough to have a lot of great unis. Future success and happiness in no way is predicated on attending either.

TenSheds · 08/01/2024 21:19

Lovely to see familiar names checking in and the kind words of wisdom. DD admitted this evening she's really stressed about tomorrow. She was fine until she went into school where everyone was talking about universities and those who know, teachers especially, were asking if she'd heard yet. So much pressure, they are so proud of her.

Finished the open 🍷 tonight in hope of sleeping 😄 Possibly chippy tea tomorrow, certainly the weather for it 🥶

mondaytosunday · 08/01/2024 21:25

C for us and DD is just now doing the post interview survey sent by her college. They did confirm that UCAS will be updated on the 24th and emails will follow later that day by 4pm.
She's put YouTube as the most help in the application process - for me it's this thread!
