I wanted to get a news thread ready for everyone as you wake up in the Uk.

We are settling into a routine of talking to DS on FaceTime on Sunday mornings after our breakfast, which is early pm his time. It is so nice to see his smile and catch up on how he is doing. I know at some point he will have a bad day, but so far he seems to be doing so well, I am ridiculously proud.

Hope you all have a good week!

That sounds like a lovely visit @stilldumdedumming - what a kind, thoughtful son you have. What show did you go and see?

Yes a heated throw will be a fab consideration if the landlord is slow to put on heating however we happened to meet him briefly when he was just leaving (he'd been testing alarms etc) as we arrived to move DD in a while back and he seemed reasonable and approachable and when we discovered a chair had a broken seat he fixed it super quick.
In some ways it's lucky her room is so small as it'll heat quickly with a mini heater if needs be.

oh i wish my dd landlord was as quick to fix the issues in her flat ,it hadnt been cleaned it he said it had there was socks under the beds vapes on the sofa, food left in the fridge/ and washing left in the washing machine, none of the rooms had light bulbs in ,he said said he would sort the mould in the bathroom he didnt i spent 3.5 hours cleaning the mould on move in day whilst my dd spent the time cleaning the kitchen /sitting room ,the boiler needs to be topped up at least twice a day and the smoke alarm has been beeping for 3 days its a wired one so not a case of taking the battery out ,she has not been given a inventory so no idea what actually belongs to the flat or what the previous people have left, but they have a henry hoover ,shes been there 2 weeks and already been home 3 times its going to be a long year

AnneOfCleavage · 30/09/2024 19:32

@iwishiwasonhol Get your DD to get straight on to the landlord and report everything. That is not on at all. They pay so much and so it should have all the basic requirements eg light bulbs for goodness sake. Poor thing. Hope the landlord comes good 🤞
I'll be honest, we had to do a proper clean when DD moved in as it was quite dirty and they have now bought plastic boxes to put all the plates, cups and cutlery etc that had been left in cupboards and therefore on the inventory as they all have their own which they prefer. There were lots of flies buzzing around the lounge ceiling so hopefully they'll die off soon.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 30/09/2024 19:52

That's so awful iwish. I really feel for you and your DD Flowers

i have advised her to make a full list rather than contacting on seperate issues as she has been doing so far , when we got the keys in mid august it was light so didnt notice the lack of bulbs ,did inform them of the mould and cleaning and boiler not working ,he did ask when they would ,moving in she did say they would start arriving the 10th of sept no one was due till 16th but thought at least it would be sorted by then, and did make me laugh you saying about the flies as there was a can of fly spray left behind, if nothing is done im going to suggest they tell the people coming to view it not to bother or leave postnotes around the flat saying window broke etc when people come to view

AnneOfCleavage · 30/09/2024 20:10

@iwishiwasonhol The landlord comes with the prospective students I believe so post it notes may work - were there any students there when your DD looked round last year? Did it look okay then does she remember? It's shocking it's not been sorted whilst they were not moved in. He's had lots of time to sort it out.
Good idea on writing it all down and sending in one email - with pics if poss.

Mmm fly spray. There's an idea! 🤣

yes there was people in last year four boys and she said it seemed ok ,a little bit of mould in the one of the bathrooms , but not the whole ceiling and walls ,which i thnk after cleaning its not been painted with bathroom paint was just turning my bucket of a cloudy white , there is a large dehumidifer in the bathroom so possibly the boys never used it opened the window, the other bathroom is fully tilled so is much better ,and i honestly thought there was poo left in both loos as the water in the bowl is brown ,it is getting lighter apparently

stilldumdedumming · 30/09/2024 22:05

Blimey @iwishiwasonhol that sounds awful. Why are students expected to put up with this? They pay enough!

stilldumdedumming · 02/10/2024 20:28

I'm off topic. My daughter's baby has been in hospital with mystery bleeding. He has been discharged and nothing sinister. Dr said he was panicking a bit (!) but it should be a one off from very hidden internal HF&M blisters. Amazing!

stilldumdedumming · 02/10/2024 20:29

Sorry just wanted to share! Didn't realise how worried I had been.

AnneOfCleavage · 02/10/2024 22:01

Awww @stilldumdedumming that sounds very distressing all round. Poor lil mite. What a lot he's been through in a few months. Sending hugs.

DD has water leaking through the kitchen ceiling and they think it's from the shower so the big bathroom is out of use so 6 of them using the other small shower room. Landlord is coming Friday at 8am to reseal shower tray . DD had a weird smell in her room and her sink is slow draining she said so she's bought some sink cleaning stuff and it's draining great now so she hopes the smell will be gone tomorrow. She quipped that she hates this adulting malarkey hahaha.
They have a list of stuff for the landlord to sort so if he continues to come up trumps I bet they'll stay there for a 2nd year.

NotDonna · 02/10/2024 22:16

Awww @stilldumdedumming is the baby ok now? Must have been incredibly worrying!

Fingers crossed for baby's quick recovery @stilldumdedumming , what an anxious time for you and dd.

A good landlord is worth their weight in gold @AnneOfCleavage , I hope your dd can go back to the big bathroom and breathe the air in her room soon! We had a terrible smell in a cheap hotel room over the summer and it was definitely a shower tray issue, so that sounds likely.

ZittiEBuoni · 03/10/2024 08:52

(As in slow draining, I mean - I know your dd doesn't have a shower in her room...)

Lowther · 03/10/2024 08:55

@stilldumdedumming speedy recovery for baby and I hope mum and you are alright after such a scare.

AnneOfCleavage · 03/10/2024 08:59

Haha @ZittiEBuoni I got what you meant 😃 We also had a blocked smelly shower tray in a hotel last year and DH ended up pulling out the metal grid thing and pulling out tons of hair and sludge and basically sorting it out for them as they seemed helpless as to what to suggest. Water was literally cascading over the tray as it was so backed up. How this wasn't noticed when cleaning the room is baffling.

DD in lectures all day so will find out how her room smells later on 🤞🤞

Hope your lil grandson is on the mend now @stilldumdedumming

stilldumdedumming · 03/10/2024 19:30

Thank you everyone. He does seem a lot better now.

I'm so pleased Flowers

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/10/2024 12:17

How is everyone's DC doing? DS is being rather uncommunicative but did manage a FaceTime on Sunday. I'm hoping he's just busy as he has firm for going quiet when he's struggling.

He's home this weekend though as he has a local event on. Really looking forward to seeing him.

ZittiEBuoni · 09/10/2024 15:26

Have a great weekend with your ds @SiouxsieSiouxStiletto (good name).

DD was home at the end of September for DH's birthday, with 'freshers flu' (surely it should have a different name for second years) but otherwise chipper. She seems to be working hard and has dropped some of the productions and groups she was planning to audition for. She doesn't seem upset about it though. (I am - I was hoping to go and see at least one before Christmas!)

MargaretThursday · 09/10/2024 18:34

I've had a few texts from dd.

She's tired after a dance lesson.
She's stiff after a dance lesson.
Can I order this for her?
GUESS WHAT A SHOP I LIKE IS OPENING IN TOWN AREN'T YOU EXCITED (actually, at nearly midnight, I was more tired, but it was nice to hear from her).

I get a totally different communication than I did with dd1. Dd1 was occasional texts, and a zoom call once a week.
Dd2 tends to be if she wants something or is excited. She does have a tendency to text just as I'm going to sleep, but it's always lovely to hear from her (well except for the "have I got scabies?" (she didn't) one last year) and when she's chatty she's good company even by text.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/10/2024 19:43

Thank you @ZittiEBuoni. They really do need a new name for Freshers Flu don't they? I'm sure DS has had Covid, he's much better now though thankfully.

@MargaretThursday I know what you mean about just flogging to sleep but at this point I'd be happy with anything!

MirandaWest · 09/10/2024 19:57

DS was back last weekend (step brothers birthday) and will be back late tomorrow as he’s got a gig here on Friday. He doesn’t tend to be in touch too much but texts enough that I’m not too worried. After this time last year when he was very ill and ended up in hospital here I will probably always be a bit worried but I do my best.

He did manage to fall over while skateboarding (various scrapes and he showed the straight after it happened photos which were rather worse..,) plus he’d been having freshers flu and manage to skid in the rain in the car but luckily it didn’t end up in a crash….

i got told these all afterwards 😃

But it sounds like his house is a much better place to be living - he took the Wii from here and they’ve been playing together, they’ve watched Strictly and Bake Off and he seems overall happier than last year. He gets to go on a field trip somewhere tomorrow to do with rivers (doing geography). And has said he probably needs to start working on his assignment due in at the end of October as it will actually count this year. Having done well in first year I think he wants to carry on like that.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/10/2024 20:17

And thank you Zitti Wink

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/10/2024 20:21

I bet you're really looking forward to seeing him Miranda. Our DS gets here about 9pm on Friday. His lectures don't finish till quite late then he's busy for most of Saturday at an event. Hoping I get at least a meal with him!

He's also enjoying being in a house more with a Sitting Room and a tv, much more Socisl than last year when they just had a smallish kitchen.
