University offers coming in?

1000 replies

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

English is a great degree to have. If that is her passion I would say definitely study that.
I studied law and went into tax, then back out and back in again!
Recent grads in my team have a variety of degrees- any traditional degree like English/history/geography etc is well respected definitely.

catmomof3 · 25/10/2023 12:19

My daughter wants an English degree, she would rather study something she loves than do something based on job prospects. She'll figure that out once she has graduated.

Norma27 · 25/10/2023 11:46

I work for one of the big firms in tax, any degree will be acceptable pretty much to get in the big firms.
I had an interesting chat with a new audit grad recently. He did accountancy and finance degree or something similar. He gets exemptions for some exams, but as he took modules he enjoyed at uni he is still doing the tougher for him professional exams now! I had never thought about that before!
Always do a degree you will enjoy- not what you think looks good!

Yes, it was the same when I trained as an accountant - a friend's accountancy degree got him literally a couple of exemptions from the first year exams, and no exemptions at all from the 2nd and 3rd exams.

I don't think he found the exams any easier than the rest of us who had no prior knowledge, so I do wonder whether he ever wished he'd done something else at university!

Rollergirl11 · 25/10/2023 12:58

Same here, DD wants to study English because she loves literature and it’s been her dream since she was at primary school. She isn’t swayed by graduate prospects/earnings. I’m sure there are plenty of transferable skills that would make her a great candidate.

DH did his degree in Chemistry and ended up working in Advertising/Media so just goes to show that you can end up going down an entirely different path.

sambamyty · 25/10/2023 13:20

I'm sure there is a list somewhere of English lit career prospects but most say teaching which isn't what she wants to do .
Be interesting to know if it's better to have an English lit degree at a top end uni or a cs degree at the mid range uni.
Bloody minefield I wasn't prepared for !

Rollergirl11 · 25/10/2023 13:40

@sambamyty DD doesn’t want to go in to teaching either. Warwick list the following as potential career paths following an English lit degree:

  • Journalists
  • Newspaper and periodical editors
  • Publishers
  • Creative directors
  • Arts officers, producers and directors
  • Authors, writers and translators
  • Musicians and composers
  • Teachers
  • Advertising accounts managers
  • Business sales executives
  • Solicitors and legal associate professionals
  • Management consultants and business analysts
  • Marketing associate professionals
  • Academics and researchers

I’m sure there are plenty more.

DD is now panicking as one of her close friends has just received an offer from Exeter for Geography. She’s catastrophising that she won’t get one despite her PG’s being well over the entry requirements. I think Exeter went in to clearing for English this summer so clearly not over-subscribed so can’t see that they won’t offer.

Jaxx · 25/10/2023 13:53

@Rollergirl11 it will come don’t worry although I was the same until my son’s offer arrived earlier today.

His offer for History at Exeter is AAA. They are only offering a one grade reduction for A or above at EPQ if offer is firmed - which may very well be the case if his applications for Cambridge and Durham aren’t successful.

PumpkinKnitter · 25/10/2023 14:24

@sambamyty From my daughter’s experience @Norma27 is absolutely right. There are many careers which don’t specify degree subject. DD went from languages to audit with one of the big 4. She had to get up to speed quickly - from not knowing what a balance sheet was to passing her first exams in 3 weeks - but once past the basic exams everyone was pretty much on a level playing field. In fact, she ended up doing better than the accountancy / economics / maths grads because she was determined to prove an arts graduate was just as good! I would definitely recommend doing what she loves. An English lit degree from a good uni can take you a lot of places!

PumpkinKnitter · 25/10/2023 14:29

@Rollergirl11 My DD hasn’t had an offer from Exeter either. I guess it just depends on the subject they have applied for. DD’s predictions are well above the typical offer and she already has an offer from Bristol for the same course, so I guess they are just in the system somewhere.

PumpkinKnitter · 25/10/2023 14:34

@stoneysongs DD was tempted by a psychology degree or joint psychology and neuroscience, but in the end decided she wanted more lab time and the opportunity to explore neuropharmacology. I quite understand the “too much Hitler, not enough Romans” though in my case it would be “not enough Middle Ages” 🤣. I hope DS has fun with the archaeology.

WombatChocolate · 25/10/2023 15:42

DS got an offer from Exeter today. Standard AAA offer. It’s prob his 5th choice but still very nice to have the offer.

He has Birmingham and York in hand already. Now has Oxford and Durham to wait for. So, might find out he’s binned from Oxford and has no interview by the end of Nov, and will certainly know one way or the other by the end of Jan. not expecting anything from Durham until Feb/March or even later.

He applied at the end of Sept, so the 3 the expected to hear from in a shorter time frame, have all offered within the month. Now to focus on NEAs and interview prep. Good offers in hand means some of the pressure is lifted. He really liked York and also liked Birmingham and Exeter too.

He did have 3 x A star predictions, so we’d thought offers might come quite quickly. No EPQ or contextual conditions, so all are standard offers.

QUB offer in for Maths. AAA or A*AB. That’s MMath think BSc offer lower.

Rollergirl11 · 25/10/2023 16:47

@WombatChocolate is that for English?

ShanghaiDiva · 25/10/2023 17:49

Dd got an offer from Warwick today for natural sciences AAA.

Rollergirl11 · 25/10/2023 16:47

@WombatChocolate is that for English?

Yep. Hope yours hears soon too. Perhaps there’s a lull in applications arriving at UCAS this week as most places are on half term. Maybe they are getting on and processing some this week, knowing that next week lots more will appear as students finish off their PS over half term and then schools and colleges process them in the coming weeks??

DD just got an contextual offer at Warwick ABB for English Lit, that's two offers now. Waiting on Oxford, UCL and Kings.

Revengeofthepangolins · 25/10/2023 18:13

@catmomof3 I have been trying to convince da to put Warwick for english on his ucas form. Great news yours has an offer

Revengeofthepangolins · 25/10/2023 18:14

I had been hoping kings would be his early one, but evidently backed the wrong horse :-)

Rollergirl11 · 25/10/2023 18:25

Arrrrggh this is hellish! DD waiting on both Exeter and Warwick for English lit!

Warwick was a last minute swap with York, didn't think we would hear from them till next year so was very surprised to receive an offer today. DD is very happy, we haven't been to look at the uni but heard good things about it.

Calmmumnot · 26/10/2023 05:49

Hello! Has anyone heard back from unis for International Relations & Politics? Thanks

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 26/10/2023 08:54

First offer received last night for Law at Royal Holloway. Nice to have something before half term. Really is a stressful time.

QueenMabby · 26/10/2023 11:31

DS has applied to Bath, Lancaster, York, Sheffield and Keele for Physics with Astrophysics.

His application was received by UCAS last Friday (20th Oct). This morning he had a (standard) offer from Sheffield.

It's probably 5th of the 5 in terms of choice but it feels good to have one in the bag.
