Bath University Accommodation

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed somewhere, sorry if it is. DC has been accepted to Bath Uni (as a first choice) and we’re waiting for an accommodation email. Anyone has already received theirs? It’s our first experience with university application/life. Not sure how long the wait is and we’re getting a bit nervous. Should DC contact them? Or just wait patiently? Thanks for help.

Where exactly on campus would you stick the new accommodation? There isn't that much free space left!!

LightandAiry · 11/09/2023 17:43

@OscarMikeGolf I hope you and your DS have been successful in your accommodation search? Good luck to all with looking, it's a tense time.

OscarMikeGolf · 11/09/2023 19:30

Thanks for asking @LightandAiry, he’s been offered a shared room in the postgrad accommodation in the city, not ideal but better than the tent I was planning 😆

Glad your DD got sorted too @Xeno10

Good luck to anyone else waiting 🤞

SoIinvictus · 11/09/2023 19:46

@OscarMikeGolf good to hear he has something even if not his choice. Is he on a waiting list to move? I think I said earlier in the thread that someone left in dd's house just before Christmas and a boy who had been in town moved in. Just in time for the house Christmas dinner!

Another girl on her course stayed 3 days and left, so there is a lot of movement in the first month or so.

OscarMikeGolf · 12/09/2023 00:03

Ahh Christmas dinner on campus would be great. Apparently they can apply to move rooms from 16th October.

Does anyone know about the WiFi when they’re in the city? I know it’s free in halls on campus but I assume they have to pay or even sort their own WiFi when in the city which seems rather unfair.

LightandAiry · 12/09/2023 07:54

@OscarMikeGolf oh that's good he has something but not ideal as you say. Can he get in touch with his room mate before moving in? At least there is some kind of certainty.

I am in denial that my.dd - youngest - will not be here soon. She's ordered herself a bulk buy of pesto sauce! For Westwood @incywincyspiders how much kitchen space do they have?

@Xeno10 it's a relief your DD is sorted, more peace of mind with her leaving yo live in somewhere more suitable

Crikeyalmighty · 12/09/2023 12:00

@SoIinvictus god bless the U1- it's at the end of our road and I am bereft in the holidays when it goes from every 4 minutes to every 20!! It's a heck of a very hilly walk (not so bad downwards) Roll on about 10 days time.

I definitely think it's down to feeling adrift from new friends if they are all on campus- I do understand this somewhat. Ironically 4 months down the line and with some new mates I think many would prefer town

TJsAunt · 12/09/2023 13:00

@OscarMikeGolf glad he has something sorted - sounds like he would be quite high priority on the waitlist come 16 october too?

@Crikeyalmighty yes ds was distraught when he got Green Park House but now he's established there are 400 of them there and it's near a Sainsburys and a Wetherspoons (and he's met his flatmates virtually) he's quite excited.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/09/2023 14:16

@TJsAunt Yep- honestly I would prefer it - but I understand why initially many would be nervous- once they know a few people it's way more convenient and they can be up at the Uni in 7 or 8 minutes on a very very regular bus and he will have a sainsburys open to 10pm and masses of stuff within 3 minutes walk. If they make friends in 2nd and 3rd year too they will usually be 5 to 10 minutes walk away in Oldfield park -

Madcats · 12/09/2023 14:52

@TJsAunt just to warn you that the start of term/Freshers is usually an almighty mess transport-wise because Firstbus can't seem to keep its drivers. This is compounded by students all deciding that they need to set off up to campus at 8:30pm and then try to leave between 5-6:30pm.

It calms down after a couple of weeks.

If your DS is 18 and has a provisional (or full) licence the city centre has been flooded with shiny new Tier e-bikes today. They stand a better chance of getting up the hill than the old Voi scooters.

Green Park is a nice location - Lidl is about a 10 minute walk out of town along the river if they don't like Sainsbury's prices.

TJsAunt · 12/09/2023 15:26

@MAdcats am trying to disregard that as it has taken so long for him to cheer up about the whole thing....

fortyfifty · 13/09/2023 07:44

@LightandAiry In Westwood my DD got one cupboard, 1 shelf in the fridge and 1drawer in the freezer. There's lots of space under the bed to keep a plastic box with food in, like tins, unopened packets and jars. Plus, loads of shelf space in their room where DD put bottles, cereal, and snacks.

LightandAiry · 13/09/2023 07:52

@fortyfifty thanks, that sounds OK. She's right at the top, 5th floor, she's assuming there's no bathroom & kitchen on her floor.

I appreciate the info, thank you 🙂

fortyfifty · 13/09/2023 14:07

@LightandAiry

My DD was in one of the vertical flats and there was a kitchen on the top and the bottom floor. Smaller kitchen at the top for fewer people. The bathrooms are on the middle floor. The floors are split level so 5th floor is not as bad as it sounds. My DD would have liked to have been on the top floor. She was disturbed by the noise of everyone coming and going as she was half a floor up from the entrance and the kitchen was underneath her.

TJsAunt · 16/09/2023 16:31

@OscarMikeGolf - ds just got moved from off campus to on campus. He had no indication it was coming. So there is some movement already- hope it can work out for you

OscarMikeGolf · 16/09/2023 21:34

Oh interesting, thanks @TJsAunt, although none of it makes sense as there are still people without accommodation at all 🤷‍♀️

@LightandAiry, he has joined unibuddy for his accommodation but they all seem to be postgrads on there. But if he’s sharing a room surely it must be with another fresher because no postgrad is going to put up with that, are they?!!

Oh well we’ll find out soon enough, one week to go eek.

LightandAiry · 16/09/2023 22:12

@OscarMikeGolf one week.....it will be quiet here! I would think your DS will be with another fresher, is there a WhatsApp group as well? Hopefully accommodation will move around.

My dd is 5th floor too!

Madcats · 20/09/2023 18:51

Klaxon

There is an organisation in Bath called "Share & Repair" with a shop up on George St (top of Milsom St) who collected all the electrical goods that outgoing students didn't want to take home with them last academic year. They've cleaned them up and PAC tested them and they are now for sale.

Local TV just had a student buying a rice cooker (I suspect that there are quite a few of those).

LightandAiry · 21/09/2023 06:44

@Watermelon44 it will be a work out carrying her things to the 5th floor with no lift!

I am looking forward to wandering around Bath after she's dropped off, unpacked and settled, but I've heard the traffic will be very busy due to the food festival. Looking forward to exploring Bath.

LightandAiry · 22/09/2023 16:52

Back home after dropping DD off - she's fallen on her feet, room at the end of the corridor, nice and light with 2 windows. Too knackered to look round Bath after carrying thing up 5 floors and we couldn't park outside....and no trollies around! But we managed.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 22/09/2023 17:07

Did you not have a parking permit? We’ve got one for tomorrow. I’m hoping he settles quickly.

OscarMikeGolf · 22/09/2023 17:39

Glad she’s got a nice room @LightandAiry

Does anyone know how the parking permits work with city accommodation? There is a parking permit online for Green Park (where the keys are collected) but DS is about 15 minute walk away and I’m not lugging all his stuff that far by foot!!

LightandAiry · 22/09/2023 18:21

@Thisisnotmyname2022 yes we did, but no space close by. Afterwards we found a car park along Quarry Road just at the back of the halls - Westwood

@OscarMikeGolf thanks, hope someone will be along soon with info. I am gutted we didn't see Bath today, but I've told DD I'm coming up to visit soon for a tourist day!

I would say get there as early as possible.

We are chilling out now, I've stopped snivelling, lit a candle and waiting for a pizza!

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 22/09/2023 18:33

Its going to be chaos isn’t it?

I need to look for an Argos close by too for a click and collect so will need to do it twice 🙄.

Leaving here at 7, hoping the traffic won’t be too bad. It’s a 4 hour drive for us without traffic!
