New thread for the start of the Oxbridge offers.

Hugely pleased that DS has had an offer for maths, also at a different college (though also one that has lots of music going on). Now he just has to make sure he can ace STEP ... (actually it has been sounding like he's been making good progress on that front recently).

I don't know the specific offer details yet though.

Karmacat · 25/01/2023 23:15

Thank you @Juja - He's just come and sat on my bed for a chat (hasn't done that in years) seems much better and has agreed to see his teacher tomorrow who I know will be amazing with him. We had a long chat and he knows how proud we are of him, wherever he goes he'll have a ball, I think it will just take time. Tomorrow will be difficult, being the only one in his group without an offer but he'll get through it with good grace and integrity. Thank you all for getting me through this utterly wretched day.

Hope @Karmacat you and your DS get some sleep tonight .... and the chat tomorrow with his teacher is helpful ... your DS sounds just lovely - you must be so proud how he is handling this as well of his. I'm sure his friends will be sensitive

@HairyMaclary do hope your DS emerges and feels a bit better soon. My DN who didn't get offer today also waiting for his next favourite choice - the uncertainty is very exhausting for our young people.

We so need a better system for uni offers; dragging it out over 7 months isn't fair ...

DS in the middle of mocks right now, so not hearing as much about friends and other students, but general murmur is that a lot haven’t received offers from Cambridge this year - whether that’s true or not, we’ll find out soon.
Am hoping those who didn’t receive the news they hoped for yesterday are ready to look to their other options with renewed positivity - I’m sure that most will have a good selection to choose from.
My DS just wants to wait till all offers are in before finalising UCAS, so I’m hoping that Durham now get their finger out! Am I right in thinking that offers will start coming out in Feb?

OxbridgeHopeful · 26/01/2023 11:49

A couple of years ago my eldest gave up on Durham because she hadn't heard from them only a few weeks before the deadline to finalise choices. Since she'd pretty much decided other places were her preference (we were on the "another path" thread that year after trying unsuccessfully for Oxford), there came a point when getting an offer or not from Durham was irrelevant.

OnePlusOneEquals · 26/01/2023 12:12

I’m with you on that, he’s not interested in Durham other than if they give him an offer or not - he’s just curious!

OnePlusOneEquals · 26/01/2023 12:12

I’d rather that he just signs off on ucas and gets on with getting the grades he needs!

Karmacat · 26/01/2023 12:54

@OnePlusOneEquals we have been told Durham March ish (whatever that means) and St Andrew's anytime up to May! The school called me today and he was pooled at Cambridge but no one picked him up. Small consolation for him, I think?

lilyofthe · 26/01/2023 14:17

DC was a re-applicant who has been successful with C second time round. College has now invited him to an offer holder day. Is this just for the offer holder or can parents go as well? like to see the college....

HoneyMobster · 26/01/2023 16:07

@lilyofthe - it will depend on the college. I went to one with DD at her Oxford college last year. Parents were invited for lunch and a separate tour. But it will be college specific.

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 16:35

DS got an offer and I would be very interested to go to the offer holders day (not been to look at colleges etc) , do we find out the day online or does he need to tell me by finding out himself?

hampsteadmum · 26/01/2023 17:13

Cambridge Law offer here. 2A*s and an A. Have not heard about an offer holders event yet. The College sent an email today about the offer and indicated that there will be a formal offer coming in the post shortly... 🙃

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 17:26

Is it me or do offers seem really high ? I'm sure A didn't exist when I was at school and DS has AAA offer and think that for insurance offer he should go for not necessarily second choice but a safer one?

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 17:27

Opps A* and sorry about odd bold type.

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 17:28

A*AA offer

Rejects · 26/01/2023 17:47

I think Cambridge has always offered very high. But my understanding is Edinburgh is also making offers with A-stars in it and ds offer from Bristol is for three As. If you've been made an offer you should be able to hit it.

multivac · 26/01/2023 18:15

DS rejected by Camb (comp sci); but holding 3 A star offers from Warwick and Manchester. Expecting 4 A star results.... it's definitely competitive out there! 😳

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 18:28

Wow @multivac , those offers are so high. I've heard computer science is the most competitive course to get on at a lot of Universities. DS is applying for engineering but a friend went for computer science.

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 18:30

Is he going for a "reserve uni" for second choice (I.e.if he gets an offer lower than AAA*).

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 18:30

AAA* I meant

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 18:32

Not sure what my phone is doing 🤔 3x A*

My dd (not early entry) got an offer from Durham at 5.30 today (she knows a couple of others all diff subjects) who had offers today so they are starting to come out.

PacificState · 26/01/2023 18:46

@yoyo1234 Mumsnet uses asterisks as coding for bold type, it causes havoc on A level threads.

DS2 also going for engineering - he loves Manchester but their offer is the same as Oxford (2 x A star and an A) so that won't work as insurance. He has a warwick offer, I think A star and two As, but he's waiting to see whether he gets offers from bath and Bristol before deciding. He's quite minded to go for Bath, but (if he gets one) their offer might also be quite high. I think if they apply for popular subjects at very popular universities it might be normal to end up with very little wiggle room on insurance places, although it will make exam season even more stressful.

multivac · 26/01/2023 18:47

Yes, he has York as insurance. I think that might be 3 A, or possibly with 1 A star. So not exactly a breeze.... 😳

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 18:55

DS has engineering offers of AAA* Cambridge (highest offer). AB for Bath (insurance offer?). Waiting for Imperial and Bristol.

yoyo1234 · 26/01/2023 19:05

Someone mentioned STEP papers what are they for an what unis
