Not sure if there is already a thread on this? My son is hoping to apply to Cambridge for Computer Science for October 2023 start.

good news - one in the bag

juicy0 · 14/10/2022 19:06

Are offers from St Andrews and Edinburgh likely to be amongst the last do you think?

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 14/10/2022 19:19

DS's application has finally been submitted today. Phew! Well done to all those already in receipt of an offer!

OnePlusOneEquals · 14/10/2022 19:27

Thanks @goodbyestranger in all honesty I think if he gets an early offer from Lancaster or York he’ll be happy with that. I think he’d just like to know he’s got the chance of at least a place at one Uni early on and it will take the will I/won’t I pressure off

St Andrew's website says expect to hear within four weeks of applying, Edinburgh says they aimed to have responded by the third week of May (for 2022 entry)

DS has had an offer from York for Music.

Great news

goodbyestranger · 14/10/2022 20:02

Yes I agree OnePlusOneEquals. Mine all felt very reassured just to have that first offer.

My DD, Oxford Classics (1A) fresher had an offer from Edinburgh early November along with offers from Bristol and Exeter before her invite for an interview at Oxford arrived.
UCL offered before Christmas.
If any I can be of any help to you or any others applying for Classics ‘give me a shout’ !

bettbburg · 14/10/2022 20:46

I'm pondering what the Oxford view is on 3 A levels plus an EPQ rather than 4 A levels. Any thoughts ?

goodbyestranger · 14/10/2022 20:51

Three is sufficient even without the EPQ no problem at all.

princesdando · 14/10/2022 21:15

Anyone know anything about St Anne's College (Oxford)? DS liked it but I can't find much said about it. Thanks

bettbburg · 14/10/2022 21:26

goodbyestranger · 14/10/2022 20:51

That's good to know.

Three is sufficient even without the EPQ no problem at all.

Good to know!! My Dd started 4 A levels but after missing a lot of days first term of Y12 due to Covid she decided to drop one and just do 3.

goodbyestranger · 14/10/2022 21:49

This argument rumbled on for years at our school and I was absolutely clear that if my DC preferred to do three A levels not four then that was their choice. The Ho6 agreed with me but the HT didn't. The HT seemed to think that students at a top/ ish grammar needed to demonstrate more than merely three A levels and possibly an EPQ. My DC all voted with their feet but they did tend to read around their subjects, stuff that they were independently interested in. This was before the curriculum changed, which added fuel to the argument that three was fine. All the Oxford tutors said three was good, they weren't looking for quantity, just quality in the relevant subject. DD4 did three only not even the EPQ and got into her first choice college and seems to have been high on the list of offerees. It's just not a thing, number of qualifications, even from a top rated school.

Juja · 15/10/2022 07:42

@princesdando St Anne’s is known as a friendly and down to earth college

Thanks @Juja for taking the time to respond. Good to know.

Thank you @bettbburg @ProggyMat for your replies. DS has applied for Classics at Cambridge, KCL, St Andrews, Edinburgh and Exeter. Exeter have made him an offer and I was just trying to get a rough timeline for the others.
He has completed the additional application form for Cambridge and now needs to submit two pieces of written work before his application is complete.
He's off on his DofE qualifying expedition during half term and will then be trying to prepare in the hope he gets an interview.
Good luck to all your DC and thank you for this thread, it's a great source of support and information.

That's great. An early offer is great!

Karwomannghia · 15/10/2022 09:35

Hi, new to this thread and oxbridge. DS has applied to linguistics at Cambridge and liked selwyn college at the open day. He’s predicted 3 a* and did as physics last year then dropped it (a). He’s genuinely fascinated by languages but his gcse results were not brilliant after the lockdown years. He really struggled with online learning and the grades were given based on target grades (from SATs and exam results from one set of exams without any other evidence used). He’s completely different now but hoping this won’t count against him!

EmmaStone · 15/10/2022 15:51

Hi, another new one to this thread, thank you all for such valuable information along the way.

DD's application went through yesterday (nothing like leaving it to the last minute, eh?). She's looking to read a Classics based course (not straight Classics), and has applied to:
Oxford
Durham
Edinburgh
Warwick
Exeter.

I think I'm more nervous than her!

beachcitygirl · 15/10/2022 18:17

My dd button pressed last minute yesterday! Good luck all & thank heaven for this thread x
