@MFLMum2022 Congrats on those super A Levels - DD has gone into school to see if the teachers have the breakdown, she was convinced she'd flunked her French Oral but her overall points suggest not. She is also Modern languages at Oxford but deferred to 2023. The Reading list from her college is enormous so just as well she has a year to get going 😀

Very good to hear such happy news from so many others (in particular we've all been following the @kitnkaboodle family saga-

Also very much hope those pooled or appealing get to know soon. My DN missed her LSE place by one grade and is appealing but has already this morning secured 3 other offers through cleaning so there are good options - sadly all her offers were AAA so missing one meant missing all.

Congratulations to all those who have been successful. Another one here delighted (and somewhat surprised) to be doing MFL at Oxford.

it’s good to hear of those who haven’t made it in to their first choice but who are happy with their insurance. After a few weeks they’ll have a completely new focus which will be just as rewarding and possibly less stressful!

MFLMum2022 · 18/08/2022 15:59

@Juja DD’s French oral also went much better than expected - probably the case for your DD too.

And yes, DD also has a long reading list to get through. Lots of initial grammar work and basics to cover for her ab initio language too.

carben · 18/08/2022 16:46

Daughter got 4 x A* and is off to University College Oxford to study maths. As she is at a low achieving state school she is part of Opportunity Oxford and goes there for 2 weeks from 3/9 to 17/9 to get a bit of a head start with all the others on the programme. Oxford are covering all the costs as well as the accommodation. Hope she likes it there after all this!

Panicmode1 · 18/08/2022 18:06

Sorry to those I haven't managed to name check, (and apologies to @kitnkaboodle for managing to get an extra kit in there somehow) but huge congratulations to all of those who have made their offers - particularly STEP/maths people as that's an additional layer of stress to navigate.

Huge commiserations to those who missed or who have to wait for remarks - having been in that boat many years ago, I know it feels the end of the world to them today, but things have a way of working out (I wouldn't have met my now husband who was the first person to greet me as I arrived at my halls having rerouted 🙂)

I hope that whatever today brought, they are able to go out tonight and have fun with their friends and celebrate what they have achieved - with all of the COVID disruption, this cohort have had a tough time - they should ALL be proud of themselves.

limeicemint · 18/08/2022 18:16

Hi - congratulations to everyone who made their offers today. DC applied post A-level and received an unconditional offer for Cambridge back in Jan and also a choral scholarship back in March. So it was all over snd done with quite quickly.

At least Cambridge and Oxford start a bit later than other unis so a bit more time for them to get their head round the fact they're actually going, before they go!

To anyone who has missed narrowly missed their offers today, I really hope their have insurance choices that are just as great. Once they are there, they will have their friends and never look back.

Genegenieee · 18/08/2022 22:05

Late update but DD got into Cambridge to study maths, much relieved! Lovely to see her fulfil a big goal

Genegenieee · 18/08/2022 22:06

Congratulations to all for their results today 🌟

Bananabrain99 · 18/08/2022 22:08

DD got the grades needed for her place to study Engineering at Oxford which is great news for her. Congrats to everyone for surviving A levels whatever the outcome, what an exciting time for all these young people about to take the next steps in their futures. Now to work out what to do about her cat for the next 4 years as she can't take him with her!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/08/2022 22:15

Yay for both your DSs, @kitnkaboodle ! Wonder if between your DS and mine, and @Panicmode1 's, any of them will work together or become friends? (I imagine there will be lots of group work in Engineering, I'm glad as I'm convinced that's probably where my DS will meet "his people". I'm half expecting him to not be the most sociable person in his halls (Churchill). Grin

RubyDarke · 18/08/2022 22:58

DD is in - did better than her offer so thrilled. Her best friend is also in. Relief all round. Now excited to find our where DD will be living and hope she has a better view than I did in first year (college boat yard!)

Luckything50 · 18/08/2022 23:04

@carben gosh achieving all that at a low achieving state school - such a huge success - and the competition to study Maths too!
She must be a very clever young lady with real drive!

kitnkaboodle · 19/08/2022 00:41

Thanks everyone and hi @skerryberry! I appreciate the good wishes and hope your DS has had a good first year!

@carben gosh achieving all that at a low achieving state school - such a huge success - and the competition to study Maths too!
She must be a very clever young lady with real drive!

Quiet as a mouse and determined to blend into the background rather than anything else but somehow and for some reason just 'gets' maths. She can still make my jaw drop even now with her results.. Towards the end of Yr 12 her maths teacher suggested she had a go at Oxford. She thought it would be a wasted space on the UCAS form and had to be talked into it as a 'what have you got to lose' scenario. Entire application she did herself - very little support because the school has no or very little experience of Oxbridge applications and the maths teacher was off with Covid at the critical time. All the information I got about the process was through Mumsnet and scouring the internet. She has been lucky in that her application has coincided with the 'wider participation' agenda because she could never be seen as 'polished' or 'engaging' due to her extreme shyness. She is a very determined independent learner though and this should stand her in good stead during the intense terms to come. Also hoping that taking actual exams and getting those results in black and white will give her an inner confidence that she can take anywhere.

PermanentTemporary · 19/08/2022 06:19

Lovely to hear all these updates and congratulations to all of them. Carben that's a fantastic picture of your dd. I hope she absolutely loves it.

SkygardenTower · 19/08/2022 17:05

Still waiting to hear. This is a very long 48 hours.

goodbyestranger · 19/08/2022 17:17

Must be ghastly. Very best wishes.

Decafcoffee · 19/08/2022 18:46

OMG! Just heard.. she’s in!!!!!!!!!!!

HoneyMobster · 19/08/2022 18:55

Excellent news @Decafcoffee - what course?

Decafcoffee · 19/08/2022 18:59

She‘ll be studying Music with a choral scholarship.

HoneyMobster · 19/08/2022 19:02

So many musicians! DD's BF will be studying music with a Choral Scholarship at O as well!

OP posts:
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/08/2022 19:55

Oxford take on very few undergraduates to read music each year (only 65-70). Based on this thread I think most of their parents are on MN 🤣.

pantjog · 20/08/2022 10:14

LOL @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats
I think we’re a mixture of O and C though.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/08/2022 10:19

Shows how my mind works - I initially read O and C as Organ or Choral scholar. 🤣

SkygardenTower · 20/08/2022 12:17

My daughter didn’t get in. But she must have been close for the decision to take this long. It is tough not getting in,after working towards it for so long but she is remarkably upbeat and starting to get exciting about where she is going.
