Thsnk you @NewModelArmyMayhem18.

@simbobs I have read that a lot of places won't emply students because they know that they will be off again in a few weeks time. I hope you can get to see your DS. Can you visit him?

Zandathepanda · 06/07/2021 09:39

Dd got a 1st overall in her 2nd year. Very proud of her.

RampantIvy · 06/07/2021 09:40

Well done to your DD @Zandathepanda

simbobs · 06/07/2021 10:00

@Zandathepanda well done to your DD. I asked my DS how he had done and he obviously hasn't even looked! I despair!

@RampantIvy That has been his exact problem, but the jobs available in his uni city on a temporary basis are pretty rubbish - many of them working nights in warehouses, or unpopular hours elsewhere. He is back here for a couple of days, then I will have to move the rest of his chattels over there. He has a job trial this week, but it not going to pay him enough to make ends meet, unless he can find a 2nd one as well.

I know that he would like to be home some of the time as his gf lives here, but it is going to be difficult for him to see much of her, as he can't really afford the train fare. I had just hoped that he would be able to work near home , and have a good summer, but alas, it would seem not.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/07/2021 10:15

Have all the end-of-year-two results come out then by now? DS hasn't told me anything but he's a bit like the Scarlet Pimpernel these days!

Well done to your DD @Zandathepanda!

@Simbobs if it's any consolation DS won't be home for most of the summer either. I made the mistake of telling him not to come home during DD's exams (she'd have been easily sidelined by seeing big brother!) but to wait until afterwards.

I think most of them have, but I have read that students at Liverpool have been horribly shafted by the staff going on strike, so they either don't have results or have failed because their essays and assignments haven't been marked.

I feel so sorry for them. I think Liverpool have shot themselves in the foot because a number of potential students are rethinking their choice to go there.

Zandathepanda · 06/07/2021 10:20

Thank you everyone. I am basking in the glory that I half-created this intelligent creature!

Zandathepanda · 06/07/2021 10:22

To change the subject back to Liverpool: that is awful news. As if the students hadn’t suffered enough this year.

VanCleefArpels · 06/07/2021 13:51

Just seen that Gav Williamson has said there should be no restrictions on in person teaching at Uni come the new term. Halle-bloody-lulha! Can we dare to hope for an entirely normal 3rd year??

VanCleefArpels · 06/07/2021 13:51

DD results come out on 19th July - another reason to go to a nightclub I’m told 🤣

bigTillyMint · 06/07/2021 14:17

Congratulations to your DD @Zandathepanda

simbobs · 06/07/2021 14:53

There can be no further justification for not having a completely normal 3rd year for our DC, and about time, too. I think mine have both gone 'off the boil' educationally thanks to the situation over the last 18 months, but we are where we are.

DS has now found a different job, still in uni city. Warehouse work, but better pay and hours that the first offer that he had, so I am somewhat relieved. Going away when it is not to actually study seems different somehow.

bigTillyMint · 06/07/2021 16:38

Well done your DS - shows good initiative and work ethic @simbobs

Decorhate · 06/07/2021 18:05

Dos claims not to know when his results come out. Hmm

According to Google it’s end of next week...

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/07/2021 07:22

I believe the UEA results come out next week, although happy to be proved wrong.

Yeah @Decorhate my DS is similar with not having his finger on the pulse!

On a slightly different subject has everyone else had confirmation of next year's student loan? Both DC applied before the deadline. One was told that her parents had not completed their information (not true), the other was informed that we would be subject to a household income check. This was a month ago and we have heard nothing from them. I checked DS's account and it just shows that the application has been submitted.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 my DS really doesn't seem to have his finger on the pulse, either. Having spent too much time at home and studying in his bedroom, plus a relatively early end to term, he is just dislocated from university life.

blametheparents · 07/07/2021 09:25

DS’s 2nd year results come out on 19th July, but they did finish their exams and term later than most.
He and another housemate cleaned the house thoroughly before they left for the summer (they are staying in the same house next year). They figured that it would be nice to return to a clean house, and that the landlord might check the house. Likely the only time the kitchen floor was cleaned, but it’s been done now! I refuse to get involved and help clean it etc. It’s their home and they’re doing what needs doing - even if not as regularly as I might do it!

Good luck to everyone’s DCs waiting for 2nd year results. I imagine all 2nd year results count in some way towards the final degree classification? DS’s is 1/3rd of the total.

icanbewhatiwant · 07/07/2021 10:24

Ds has had his results from UEA a few weeks ago. He has been told that he can use the results as his degree results if he gets a lower result next year. But if next year is higher he can forget this years result. He is hoping for better next year as there hasn't been any biology practicals since 2019 he's not enjoying watching the lecturer do the practicals, then writing up as of he's done them.

Ds been home since Friday as his summer job starts Monday next week. I have had enough of the mess already, plates out, mugs out, food all over the work tops, dirty hob etc. I come home from work to mess 😡 I don't like mess.

RampantIvy · 07/07/2021 10:32

DD would love it if she could use this year's results. She scored a good first this year. She has managed quite a few practicals since March this year. They had to provide two negative lateral flow tests three days apart before going into the lab though.

icanbewhatiwant · 07/07/2021 10:45

@RampantIvy that's good she had a few. great result too. Ds had strikes jan and feb then covid hit. I think he did get one practical in October. But that was it. So just Oct. nov and dec 2019 practicals in 2 years of a degree. Not good. I know they are all in the same boat though.

VanCleefArpels · 07/07/2021 11:57

DD 2nd year is 40% of final degree. They did away with the “safety net” this year and I can’t imagine it will be different next year (esp if back to normal teaching)

ifonly4 · 08/07/2021 10:51

simbobs DD applied in February, but it did take longer this time to hear back from them.

DD got a 2.1 from her second year.

DD was so lucky to get a lockdown job. She struggled going back to uni in Sept (Scotland had a tighter lockdown, and many pubs wouldn't let households of students eat/drink out together). Her flat didn't have a lounge so hard to mix with flat mates. She came home, got her lockdown job back - she decided to stay here where she had 34 hours pw plus her uni work. She's meant to be doing a year abroad in Sept, but if not, she'll go back to her uni city.

That's interesting what you said about the loan. Dd came to me and said that I hadn't completed it, but I was sure I had. I just went back in and did it again, and it then said completed.

DD got her results, not as good as Zanda's (well done) but the subject she thought she had done really badly on (she's always struggled with it) and spent the full 24 hours working on it-with toothache too! she did better than she thought she had, which was good.

RampantIvy · 08/07/2021 11:24

What subject is your DD doing @ifonly4 if she has time to work for 34 hours per week?

DD has more "contact hours" plus lab practicals because she is doing a STEM subject. Even if she was fit and healthy she wouldn't have enough physical hours in the day to work 34 hours per week.

simbobs · 10/07/2021 12:13

DS moved to uni city and started work. He hadn't reached the end of the 2nd day before being told that one of his house mates has just tested positive for covid. What a pain for them all! Hope others are getting to enjoy their summer.
