I saw on WIWIKAU that someone withdrew from
a place they were waiting for then received an unconditional offer with a scholarship......

@SeasonFinale are those for people who have had interviews already? Two of my close friends kids are waiting for Imperial

@BrideofBideford

Anyone heard from Imperial yet? Or Bristol?

My dc has been on hold for 2 Bristol courses since November- Philosophy & Politics and Social Politics. Has offers from the other 3 unis.

^ Social Policy & Politics not Social Politics

Hello. Any news on when Portsmouth uni accommodation opens. Every time I ask they say something different. Thanks

Ds got his student finance application approved yesterday, only applied on Saturday! I was told it took 6 weeks?
It was a straightforward application though I guess.

My son did a maths test for Imperial a month ago, but then never heard anything . So no interview. So I guess that means he’s out?

Oh well, he has 2 good offers from other Unis so it’s all fine

Still waiting from Bristol

@PrintempsAhoy did your son get the “we’re sorry your still on hold” email from Bristol a couple of days ago.

My son has offers in from Cardiff and Southampton for physics. Worried about grades now - resitting A levels after prediction of BBB last year but awarded DDE (was UUE after the algorithm but was uplifted)

@KittyMcKitty thanks for asking. he got a mail saying he’s not in with Aeronautical but they have offered him an alternative (electronics and mechanical engineering) which is good I guess

I am finding out that Aeronautical Engineering is very very competitive! Shock

As a linguïst myself this is all I uncharted waters Grin

@ButForTheGrace what grades does he need for those Unis? Has he got his back-up offer yet?

Report
KittyMcKitty · 13/03/2021 19:13

@PrintempsAhoy good luck to him with the alternative course. Ds was put on hold in Nov for Philosophy and Politics and also Social Policy and Politics and got the 2nd sorry your still on hold email last week. Fingers crossed for all still waiting!

That’s interesting, I did not know universities moved applicants around courses (am I understanding it right, to me it’s like: “you were not quite good enough for the course you applied for, but we can offer you this course instead”?) or is one oversubscribed and one undersubscribed?

KittyMcKitty · 13/03/2021 21:37

Have you read the info on the Bristol website?

www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/after-you-apply/your-application/decision/

My ds applied initially for the 2 courses he is on hold for but he saw on the student room that some people had been rejected from Pol & IR and given Alternative Offers of Social Pol & Politics. Not massively sure why they call them Alternative Offers as there’s no guarantee of an offer.

I think all Bristol courses are massively oversubscribed.

Thanks Kitty, I had not checked

Need to get on the ball a bit more!

Univrtsities can offer alternative courses on results day, if the results achieved aren't good enough for the course originally applied for. There is no obligation to accept, but some people may presumably prefer to accept a related course at their preferred university, than go to their insurance choice/ go into Clearing.

One of the reasons behind DD's withdrawal of her Bristol application was seeing applicants with similar profiles to hers being offered alternative courses to apply for. I guess she'll never know what if anything they'd have offered her now, but given the oversubscription rates it didn't seem likely they'd come up with an offer that was any kinder than those she has in hand already. She wouldn't have been interested in an alternative if that was all they had left.

Report
PrintempsAhoy · 14/03/2021 12:21

Is there any benefit in withdrawing? We’ll just wait and see I think

Report
KittyMcKitty · 14/03/2021 16:38

You can’t firm an offer until you’ve heard from everywhere so I imagine withdrawing from a Uni you’re no longer interested in allows students to choose firm / insurance.

@PrintempsAhoy if your dc would not be interested in the alternative course then there is a logic to withdrawing conversely if they would be interested then they should hang on to see if they get an offer.

Place-marking a bit as the thread keeps falling off my TIO, but DS has been rejected for vet med by Nottingham and Bristol by email, but neither have updated on Track. Nottingham was weeks ago, but he doesn't want to withdraw in case the emails were mistakes! Goodness knows why as he has offers from Liverpool & Surrey which would be his firm and insurance anyway. Hmm

Am joining - hello. My DD20 has got offers from a couple of unis and she's already been on her year out due to covid so we don't have to worry about A level grades thanks fully.
However would appreciate any advice- she didn't apply to Bristol but has realised they do a course there which is similar to another she's got on already and would rather go there- will she now have to go through clearing? Should she contact them anyway?
Also interested in seeing what happens with finance as I feel I'm about to enter into this big unknown world I know nothing about! Is there anywhere that explains fees and parental contributions in simple terms ?!?
