Hi all, this is a continuation thread from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3828249-applying-for-uni-in-2021?pg=40

I wouldn't count on Bristol having clearing places available this year, to be brutally honest. But it depends very much on the popularity of the course. A polite enquiry couldn't hurt, then at least she'll know where she stands.
There's lots of student finance information out there if you just look up student finance/wherever you live in the UK. Don't want to give you info about England if you're in Wales, for example.

PrintempsAhoy · 19/03/2021 14:22

Bristol very tough to get into

Which Uni offers has she got already?

MarchingFrogs · 19/03/2021 19:42

The actual application for student finance is through the gov.uk website - main pages of info are re England, but with links to those for the other nations. The UCAS website is also helpful.

www.gov.uk/apply-online-for-student-finance
www.ucas.com/money

Unless I've gone completely wrong with the search, it looks like there are still courses available in some subjects at the University of Bristol. So if the xpurse in question is, then she can apply through UCAS Extra- but in order to use Extra, she would have to withdraw each application she currently has in progress. A bit of a risk, possibly.

girlofthenorth · 21/03/2021 00:39

Thanks @MarchingFrogs for pointing me to that but yes big gamble. She's been offers Plymouth , Birmingham and Leeds unconditional.
I'm amazed she didn't see that Bristol was doing the same course , it's sound engineering with production, and only a few places do it .
Yes @DahliaMacNamara that's exactly what I told her !

Has she used all 5 of her choices on UCAS? If not she can just add it in and they may consider it but it would be after all he equal consideration applications were looked at. Indeed it may be worth calling and asking if they would consider it still especially as she has grades in hand. Further 40% schools are on Bristol's contextual offer list so she may find she qualifies for one of those too which strengthens her application if she already meets regular offer as she would have in effect exceeded any offer.

Definitely get her to email admissions/call them to see.

Is the course 'Sound Engineering' at The University of Bristol? I can't see it on their website.

If it is Sound Engineering at BIMM, BDS or UWE, she should not have any trouble making a late application. My nephew applied to BIMM in August and started in September for Music Production.

MarchingFrogs · 21/03/2021 13:57

The issue with the late application would come from all her UCAS slots already having been used, if they have.
The BIMM Bristol course seems to be available, though.

Hi,
Ds had a reduced offer from a university if he firmed them.
He did so a month ago but UCAS track still hasn't updated...does anyone know how long such changes take?

NotBabiesForLong · 21/03/2021 16:12

That can vary. Can you say which uni it was?

Jenthefredo · 21/03/2021 17:17

University of Nottingham

StuntNun · 21/03/2021 20:27

My DS1 has three offers: one from a Russell Group university and two from ex-polys. I had assumed he would accept the Russell Group (requires ABB) offer for his firm and either of the other two (require BCC and CCC) for his insurance. However he has said he wants to accept the lowest offer as that university impressed him the most at the online open day. I'm slightly worried that's he passing on a university rated 27th in one league table, for a university rated 121st, mainly on the basis that they were more organised for a single online event.

PrintempsAhoy · 21/03/2021 21:47

Which Unis?

It all depends, also how likely he is to get ABB (do you know his predicted grades?)

StuntNun · 21/03/2021 22:03

It's Belfast Queens, Manchester Met and Wolverhampton. His predicted grades are ABC but his GCSE predicted grades were much lower than his actual grades so he may well get the ABB he needs for Queens. He's also working his socks off for this assessments this month. It's a big change because Queens was his first choice for at least two years (we're from Northern Ireland) so I wasn't expecting him to suddenly switch his preference to Wolverhampton.

NotDonna · 22/03/2021 06:45

I’m with you regarding Queens v Wolverhampton. Is there another reason behind the change of heart? Moving away for example?

StuntNun · 22/03/2021 07:18

I think Wolverhampton just appeals to him more now. When he applied, his preferences were Queens and Edinburgh so he didn't put much thought into the other unis on his application; they were really there just to provide an insurance he thought he wouldn't need.

chopc · 22/03/2021 07:56

@StuntNun I think you need to talk to his teachers about what grade they will think he will achieve. I don't know if exams are cancelled in Northern Ireland?

If he has a realistic change of achieving the grades set by Queens, he should be encouraged to put that as his first choice irrespective of an online open day.

Of course it is important to go to where you are happiest provided the Unis are equal but as you know, they are not.

However I feel you need to do more digging around why he would no longer place Queens as no 1. If ABB is aspirational then he may not want the pressure. In an already uncertain year he may want the certainty of a safer option.

StuntNun · 22/03/2021 08:01

Thanks Chopc I'll email his head of year today about it.

SeasonFinale · 22/03/2021 14:58

@StuntNun is he applying as an NI candidate or a Rest of UK Candidate. I ask because QUB will likely accept on dropped grades if a RUK as they want the higher tuition fees. DSS had a BBB offer and got in with BBD.

StuntNun · 22/03/2021 15:09

Oh that's interesting SeasonFinale. We're currently living in England so that might be why Queens made him an offer even though his predicted grades are one short of those required for his course.

Jenthefredo · 23/03/2021 20:10

Ds has a 1-2-1 with a history tutor on friday at Loughborough and has booked an in person campus tour over Easter.
It would be interesting if he chose Loughborough over Nottingham.
I think he preferable course at Nottingham

Longtimenewsee · 25/03/2021 15:22

Hi, if you have a contextual offer (which is lower if you firm the uni up) , does anything change on ucas track once firmed? ie- is there any acknowledgement that you have firmed and that the lower offer now applies?

Jenthefredo · 25/03/2021 15:39

long
Ds1 has had a reduced offer from Nottingham and has been told his new offer will track on ucas within the next 48 hours...he firmed them on 26th Feb!

Longtimenewsee · 25/03/2021 15:47

Thank you @Jenthefredo. It’s a different uni but maybe we just need to wait . Congrats on the Notts offer!

Jenthefredo · 25/03/2021 15:52

Thank you!
We are a bit confused by it (as his offer was reduced already compared to the stated offer...) but we are not complaining! :)

Jenthefredo · 25/03/2021 15:52

No harm e mailing admissions to ask...
