@cmcc22 what does he hate about sharing? If you break it down?

If his college has an annex maybe he can ask to swap with someone from there?

cmcc22 · 14/09/2021 23:55

@chopc It's just the thought of spending almost £8000 to share a room. Only £500 cheaper than single. When it's a loan he'll have to repay he thinks it's a lot of money for something which could be an awful experience depending on a room mate he knows absolutely nothing about.

chopc · 15/09/2021 00:08

Hmm he does have a point .... is it normal practice for shared to be only £500 cheaper?

Ekofisk · 15/09/2021 03:47

@Sidney

My dd has a moving in slot for 8.30 on Sunday morning and we cannot find anywhere within an hour’s drive of Durham to stay the previous night that doesn’t cost a fortune. Nowhere! What is everyone doing up there?!
Have you looked at Middlesbrough? Hotels.com showing rooms available at the Holiday Inn Express and the Jury’s Inn for Sat 25th (coming in at £100 per room though).
clan17 · 15/09/2021 07:01

Have a look on AirBnB lots on there still for moving in weekend:

Vargas · 15/09/2021 08:52

Completely anecdotal of course but a couple of friends of mine shared with strangers in their first year at Uni and have nothing but positive things to say.

It does seem ridiculous to only get £500 off though!

hanghang · 15/09/2021 09:02

Only just found this thread - really useful! Just wondered if anyone knew whether it was now too late to defer esp if not on £5k list. Thanks

chopc · 15/09/2021 09:26

@hanghang if you don't ask you don't get. Has your DC asked?

Meery · 15/09/2021 16:58

Pleased to say that Trevs contracts are coming out this afternoon. All seem to have a moving in time on Sunday pm, according to my dd!

libbytrois · 15/09/2021 17:12

Hurrah @Meery - suspect that although contract starts 26th moving dates may be either Saturday or Sunday (if you look at what other posters say). Huge relief though.

Greyhair59 · 15/09/2021 17:28

Butler accom confirmed but not time to move in or room number. Should be the saturday according to alphabet but hope not early as we are driving from london. Had booked 2 rooms at mariott in durham so when have definite time will cancel one and confirm on mn so hopefully someone else can use it.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 15/09/2021 18:25

Dd has her Trevs room confirmed. It is shared but she is actually quite up for that (a lot of Malory Towers as a child).

Peaseblossum22 · 15/09/2021 18:30

Nothing from Trevs here , why do I feel that Whitby B&B beckoning😱

SpamhappyTootsie · 15/09/2021 18:52

Apparently there is a music festival in Durham that weekend! Stone Valley Festival. Explains the lack of accommodation?

LeiatheSchnauzer · 15/09/2021 18:59

@Peaseblossum22, fingers crossed it comes through soon!

myrtleWilson · 15/09/2021 19:10

Durham resident here (and wife of a lecturer)... Hope all your DC have a fabulous time in the city & at the university.

I posted this last year and If its not set out in any of the bumf about drop offs, just to let you know that New Elvet Bridge in Durham City Centre is still closed (14 months and counting!!)
www.durham.gov.uk/article/23385/How-the-New-Elvet-Bridge-roadworks-will-affect-you
It normally would be the quickest route if you're coming of the motorway at J62 to reach colleges around South Road. There are diversions but it may be busier or you could come off at J61 and come through bowburn and cut across onto South Road at the science site

Enjoy!

Peasepuddingplease · 15/09/2021 19:16

DD has just mentioned that on the Van Mildert freshers chat (shes a lurker too!) it appears at least one fresher has been called back to Castle having been reallocated from there. Emotional rollercoaster springs to mind and less than 2 weeks to go….I presume a few deferred then?

Vargas · 15/09/2021 19:31

@myrtleWilson Oh thank you, that's useful to know!

@Peasepuddingplease Very interesting. ds just told me that one of his mates just deferred from VM.

DS now saying he prefers VM (his current allocation) to his other previously higher choices Grin.

Peasepuddingplease · 15/09/2021 19:36

@Vargas am glad your DS is saying that, DD the same!

321zyx · 15/09/2021 20:10

@myrtleWilson thank you, very useful.

cmcc22 · 15/09/2021 20:15

Update on room share - contact with room mate has been made. Studying completely different subjects, don't have a huge amount in common but chatting via Instagram and "maybe sharing won't be too awful". Got everything crossed it works out🤞🏻

cmcc22 · 15/09/2021 20:18

Should have said glad to hear most people now have confirmations

SpamhappyTootsie · 15/09/2021 20:19

That’s good news cmcc22. The age of contact by social media does have its advantages, being able to chat to your room mate beforehand!

321zyx · 15/09/2021 20:23

@cmcc22 DS also been allocated a shared room - no contact yet (as far as I know)! Way (way) back when.... my room was allocated on arrival (not Durham) it wasn't pre planned but allocated on order of arrival. It was fine and a group of us that shared rooms in first year ended up sharing a flat in years 2 & 3 and are still in contact many years later!

cmcc22 · 15/09/2021 20:29

@321zyx that's what I've said to DS it could end up with a lifelong friend. He is at least now prepared to give it a chance
