DD woke up to an accommodation license agreement from Hatfield this morning, no room details, but address is stated as the Bailey. One step closer ...

chopc · 14/09/2021 14:23

What is a license agreement? Is that the accommodation agreement between student and halls?

SpringSparrow · 14/09/2021 14:59

@chopc yes it’s the accommodation agreement between the student and the university. I thought my dd’s had the details of the accommodation on it though.

whoatethelastbiscuit · 14/09/2021 15:06

@chopc - yes, sorry wasn't very clear, the accommodation agreement ... and the arrival slot has literally just arrived, Saturday morning. Still no room/staircase number but confirmed DD will be on the bailey site.
meant to say before, last year Collingwood were using at least some post grad accommodation for Freshers, DS had one of their rooms.
Fingers crossed those still waiting to hear get some news in the next few hours/couple of days.

Longtimenewsee · 14/09/2021 15:06

Dd had room number on the licence agreement that she got but she is in same college as yours @SpringSparrow so perhaps this varies by college

SpamhappyTootsie · 14/09/2021 15:32

I think it does vary, as DS has signed his agreement for Butler but no room no. as yet.
If I can’t organise what I need to organise in time then I won’t be going to see him off, which makes me cross. I’m not a helicopter parent but apart from anything else I’ve never been to Durham and kind of looked forward to going with him!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 14/09/2021 15:49

Ds's agreement doesn't have any block or flat number on it, just says South College. There has been no questions about whether you are vegan or vegetarian, have any food allergies etc. I would have thought they would allocate people based on some information about them apart from their name. South has said they will find out their flat on the day they move in.

@SpamhappyTootsie I think it is completely normal to want to see where your child will be living for the next 3 years, especially in their first year when it is for a lot of children, their first time living away from home.

Vargas · 14/09/2021 15:51

DS signed his agreement and all I could see on it was that it was a 'Catered standard room standard licence - Freshers' and the accommodation address is the college. So I am assuming it will be on the college site, but no room details yet.

DS' modules have been approved, although not difficult as they are all in his subject.

Tightly crossed fingers for those still waiting for drop off times and accommodation agreements, it is utterly infuriating. Hope you hear very very soon. FWIW I have a RL friend whose dd is still waiting...perhaps interesting that her dd heard almost 2 weeks before my ds which college she had and so the wait is even longer in some ways...

SpamhappyTootsie · 14/09/2021 15:54

Thanks OnTheBenchOfDoom. I do want to see him there and experience the Uni Drop Off as a parent as well as a student all those years ago. There was a buzz about the new start and I loved it. There’ll be no crying, just a bracing hug and an insistence he takes the Tupperware I’ve got him because you never know when it will come in handy!
We do plan to have long weekends over that side of the country though, so I can always rock up with extra flapjack then if I can’t go this time.

chopc · 14/09/2021 15:56

@SpamhappyTootsie I also have a job in which I you can't take leave at short notice - if the move in slot is not going to work for me I will ask if it could be moved. No way am I missing out on this moment after 18 years of parenting

SpamhappyTootsie · 14/09/2021 16:01

chopc thank you. I’ll admit to BUT IT’S DURHAM! as well. I fancied applying but I went for Oxbridge and the school advisers told me Durham didn’t like that, so I didn’t put it on the form (not the only shit advice they gave me about applying for Uni but never mind). When DS said it was his first choice I was secretly thrilled Grin. Then not-so-secretly-thrilled when he got his offer.

SpringSparrow · 14/09/2021 17:04

Last year the move in slots were by household block. DD’s entire block of 24 had the same moving in slot. It was in the middle of Covid restrictions, so perhaps different times, but also a college on the Bailey so parking is restricted so you had to arrive in your time slot.

chopc · 14/09/2021 17:16

Given that it's their fault that we can't be more flexible, I think it's OK to ask for some flexibility from their side

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 14/09/2021 17:31

Ah good luck to all the little Durham freshers. I shall retain from singing songs about Hatfield, largely because I can't remember them! Soon your children will be making the city centre busy, congregating in large groups and generally blocking the pavements. I love it. Makes me happy to see the students come back.

If any of them are in scouting I could use another cub leader! Only half joking....

Finding the accommodation talk quite amusing, I don't think anyone found out where they would be living (apart from college) until they got there in my day, you just turned up at your time slot and got given Key and room number. My room was in moatside, where there used to be a prison. It was dark and damp and teeny tiny. Shared loo and shower with about a million other people and didn't even have a shared kitchen area on my floor so shared a fridge with 2 million others. Think student accommodation has come on a bit!

SpringSparrow · 14/09/2021 17:47

@chopc I think they can be flexible with arrivals, certainly one lad arrived the day after the others and another about a week later, but just worth noting that almost everyone in that block was arriving at the same time, if you want to be around to form those initial friendships!

SpamhappyTootsie · 14/09/2021 17:52

Finding the accommodation talk quite amusing
The part of me that remembers the breeze block Hall with only 2 pin light sockets you had to ‘adapt’ with cable from the local hardware store (and you did NOT tell them why you needed it or they had to refuse to sell it to you) and 2 baths per floor of 30 students is laughing hollowly at my Mum Fussing Grin
I moved to an older building in the second year and my light blew. I spent half a term lit only by a fringed standard lamp from the SCR.

cmcc22 · 14/09/2021 18:05

DS accommodation offer arrived. Move in slot Sunday - not ideal. He's got a shard room and now furious I wouldn't let him take the £5000 and defer!!

SpamhappyTootsie · 14/09/2021 18:45

Will he come round to the idea, cmcc22? Stick it out for a few weeks until people drop out?

Meery · 14/09/2021 18:51

@cmcc22 will that be shared for the year or a term? Agree that it may be worth holding on, there’s bound to be no shows/drop outs. Is there a possibility to change moving in to Saturday, there may be someone wanting to swap?

Trevs - still waiting for news, sigh.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 14/09/2021 20:16

Ds is a sharer of information with me which I love, I don't remember sharing info with my parents when I moved to uni. He has a friend who is a second year (Butler) who has helped him find the rooms in the buildings for lectures etc on the Durham website.

www.dur.ac.uk/timetable/roominfo/durhamrooms/

Ds has shown me his Durham calendar which has his lectures and practicals etc filled in, hence needing to work out distance between buildings as some things run directly after another. Luckily it is a very short walk between buildings. He also has a map of Durham uni buildings which was on his Durham log in thing as a link. HTH.

@cmcc22 do they share for a term or the year?

cmcc22 · 14/09/2021 20:39

I believe it's for the year. The accommodation cost is annual. He's coming round slowly and has contact details for his room mate. Hope they get on. X

Sidney · 14/09/2021 20:55

My dd has a moving in slot for 8.30 on Sunday morning and we cannot find anywhere within an hour’s drive of Durham to stay the previous night that doesn’t cost a fortune. Nowhere! What is everyone doing up there?!

Vargas · 14/09/2021 21:31

@Sidney I booked a place 40 minutes away for the Saturday night, but that was a week ago. There was nothing closer to Durham that I could find.

Is everyone taking their dcs to Durham Uni?!

cmcc22 · 14/09/2021 22:32

We've just managed to book hotel in Gateshead for Saturday. Wasn't cheap but about 15 miles away
