Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

Majaso12 Was that question for me? History. Warwick, Exeter and Southampton.

Majaso12 · 04/11/2020 14:17

Yes sorry! My dd has applied to Oxford, UCL, Imperial, Warwick and Bath for biochemistry and not received any offers yet. We weren’t expecting anything from any of them yet except Bath and Warwick, but getting quite worried now. I know Bath and Warwick used to be very quick at giving out offers. Bath have said they are going to start giving out offers at the end of the week. We did think she would have got one from Warwick by now especially as she applied so early.

MarchingFrogs · 04/11/2020 18:27

Warwick offers for DS1 (Biochem. 2015 entry) and DD (Politics and International Studies and French, 2019 entry), both all A predicted grades: applied c.24th November, had offer by the time.e I was writing Christmas cards and applied 1st Dec, kept waiting almost until last possible day, respectively. On the whole, Warwick's rep is for late rather than early offers, I think.
DS2 (A*AB predicted grades) will also be applying, but for History of Art. When he gets round to it, so won't blame the university for not rushing with a response there.

Majaso12 · 04/11/2020 19:01

When ds2 applied to Warwick for biomedical sciences (2017 entry) in October, he got an offer within a week and also from Bath. Dd has been waiting 6 weeks tomorrow and predicted 3 A*s and needs ABB for Warwick. I’m thinking now she’s on hold and won’t get an offer until after 15th January, but don’t understand why.

Revengeofthepangolins · 04/11/2020 22:42

@Baaaahhhhh - three offers is epic. How exciting (esp as my son is another historian).

NotDonna · 05/11/2020 06:33

Crikey majaso I would have thought with 3xA*S she would have been snapped up for an ABB course! That’s not a good sign for our DCs ☹️

Majaso12 · 05/11/2020 07:16

That’s what I thought, we thought it was a really safe choice and was going to be her back up. Ds2 was predicted 3 As and got an offer within a week in 2017.

NotDonna · 05/11/2020 08:30

Maybe it’s blinking covid that’s stalling them? One of DDs friends had an offer from Warwick yesterday (she’s oxbridge like yours too) so maybe it’ll be any minute now. The waiting is hard isn’t it? It’s only been 2 weeks for us but it feels like forever!

Majaso12 · 05/11/2020 08:34

NotDonna What course is that for at Warwick? It’s been 6 weeks for us!

NotDonna · 05/11/2020 08:40

MarchingFrogs what grade range is your DS2 applying to please? Im asking as DD has same grade predictions. I’m wondering if hers are a bit too aspirational. It’s hard to know if that A* will offset the B if a uni wants AAA.

NotDonna · 05/11/2020 08:44

majaso my DDs friends is applying for history. What course is your DC?

Majaso12 · 05/11/2020 08:56

Biochemistry.

MarchingFrogs · 05/11/2020 13:01

@NotDonna, he is applying to 4 at ABB (UEA, Birmingham, Sussex and Warwick) and to York, which is AAB. His choices are based on the 'thrust' of the courses offered and what he has seen of the campus / city - both, in the case of the first three and virtual open days, YouTube videos and Mum's tourist guide act for the other twoSmile.

His absolute favourite is UEA and the accompanying delights of Norwich

NotDonna · 05/11/2020 13:21

Mmmm marchingfrogs his sound very sensible!! My DD has one AAB. The rest A*AA/AAA Madness. But what will be will be! I’m desperate for that AAB to offer soon, given it could be the only offer she gets! Hmm
I’ve never been to Norwich. Is it lovely? UEA seems to be pretty popular though - there’s a whole thread devoted to UEA I think on MN.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 05/11/2020 14:25

I went to UEA in the early 90s to study art history. I loved it. And Norwich is fab, I lived there for years after graduating.

Johnathonripples · 05/11/2020 14:41

I lived and worked in Norwich for 8 years after graduation. Its fab

Ulelia · 05/11/2020 15:35

I wouldn't worry too much about offers not being in yet. With so many staff working from home, all decision making is being delayed in many places. Got that from an Imperial rep today.

KittyMcKitty · 05/11/2020 17:30

Can I join? Ds did send & pay (or whatever it’s called) yesterday although school still need to add reference. He’s predicted AAA and applied for Bristol x 2 courses, both AAA, QMUL ABB, Liverpool AAB and Manchester ABB.

Hopefully school will do tgeir bit soon and then it’s just 🤞🏻 that he gets some offers!

Revengeofthepangolins · 05/11/2020 18:14

@KittyMcKitty Welcome to the throng. It is both a bit exciting and relief once the form is finally in to UCAS Smile

NotDonna · 05/11/2020 20:27

They all sound very sensible too kitty.
DD didn’t get to see her reference but I know some schools allow them a quick glance - not long enough to make notes but just ‘agree’ & certainly never seen by parents. Not sure how common that is though.
QMUL is another university that seems quite popular on MN that I’d not heard of before.

KittyMcKitty · 05/11/2020 20:42

@Revengeofthepangolins relief is definitely the word it had got to the stage that he just needed to send the thing off and stop over thinking it. He kept considering different unis but then coming back to the original ones.

@NotDonna I think QMUL has the advantage / disadvantage of being somewhat poor relation to the other London Russell Groups. It certainly hasn’t got the glamour of UCL, KCL LSE etc. I know of people who are there and they are very happy. It also has the advantage of being a campus Uni in London.

calculatorqueen · 06/11/2020 08:10

Anyone heard from Bath yet? At the virtual open day, they said offers would start going out at the end of October, beginning of November.

Majaso12 · 06/11/2020 08:19

No, still haven’t heard from Bath and applied on 24th September.

calculatorqueen · 06/11/2020 09:07

@Majaso12

No, still haven’t heard from Bath and applied on 24th September.
DS applied at the beginning of October. Hopefully we'll hear soon.
Majaso12 · 06/11/2020 09:13

Calculatorqueen Hopefully any day. Getting quite anxious about it now. Bath and Warwick I thought would have been quick as well because they have been in previous years.
