Applying for uni in 2021...

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

The version I have heard, so caveats aplenty, is that a student who was made an offer has received an email saying that the offer has had to be withdrawn. This was in a group chat for Bristol offer holders (not on TSR).

I will try to get more out of DS. The reason for my posting was to see if anyone else had heard similar.

Of course they can make fewer offers.

Bristol are one of the unis who are very upfront with their criteria and scoring. They make a number of early offers based on prior application data and leave a number of spaces "vacant" for the equal consideration applicants.

It is up to them if there are say 50 spaces available still whether they now make 75 offers or 150 offers for those spaces as long as they do give equal consideration to all those received prior to the (extended) deadline.

The reality is Bristol is a sought after uni and will be selecting rather than recruiting. It, like other prestigious unis, will not make as many offers as they usually will as they will anticipate with TAGS being used more people will be meeting offers than usual and they need to be able to accommodate them (as in on courses and not just in halls etc)

Spoken to DS. The group is a Snapchat one with about 100 (self-declared) Bristol offer holders in it. One person shared a screen shot of what looked like a legit email from Bristol, revoking their offer. Two more people have subsequently said they have received emails doing the same. STEM subject(s).

I know no more than this. It could of course be a hoax or attention seeking. If true though, it is important. Anyone else here with a DC in a Bristol group chat?

If the group has started because they "met" on TSR I would beware of trolls especially for competitive courses.

Ah, I have no idea where they met. No other info at all. I will see if DS has heard any more later on.

Anyone with DC applying for medicine would want to be a bit wary of some of the advice they get on here, then, since one or the most prolific providers of help on the subject of medical school applications on both sites is one and the same person.

I don't think anyone said ALL contributors on TSR . There was one who said they had an Oxford offer and were waiting to see if they had got into Cambridge too. Not too tricky to see they weren't being truthful.

Dd had a virtual school assembly yesterday and was told they can begin to firm up / insure uni choices if they have offers in .

Beetlesand- yes, you can do that as soon as your offers (all or some) come back. Accommodation is also open to book now.

Similar to seasonfinale a friend of ours needed AAB for a deferred course 2 years ago but got BBC on results day and the deferred course was still offered.

DS still waiting on 3 uni's for economics . The announcement of teacher based grades on the BBC this morning now makes me think they won't offer many places. Just so unfair on this year group if universities are judging their grades as inferior.

It is not that they are judging their grades as inferior it is just that is previous years they know that only 17% predicted grades are accurate so they over offer as many do not meet the grade due to exam performance (for a number of reasons). Last year they were left with too many people meeting grades on CAGS and having to find places or deferring places.

They aren't able to differentiate between all candidates holding the minumum predicted grades so hence I gues they will cut the number of offers they are making.

Where is he waiting for @nancypineapple some universities are notoriously slow to offer.

@NotDonna he is waiting for Warwick, ucl and the notoriously slow LSE! I know the first 2 have sent out offers but don't think LSE have sent many if any yet.

LSE have sent rejections but no idea about offers. So no news is definitely good news. Goid luck and hope the waiting is over soon.

Am joining - hello. My DD20 has got offers from a couple of unis and she's already been on her year out due to covid so we don't have to worry about A level grades thanks fully.
However would appreciate any advice- she didn't apply to Bristol but has realised they do a course there which is similar to another she's got on already and would rather go there- will she now have to go through clearing? Should she contact them anyway?
Also interested in seeing what happens with finance as I feel I'm about to enter into this big unknown world I know nothing about! Is there anywhere that explains fees and parental contributions in simple terms ?!?
