Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

That’s what I mean slalomski the kids that get the reduced offers seem to be the A A A kids. I do understand why though. Can I ask where he’s got an offer from please? DDs went in last week but no news as yet, but definitely not expecting offers for a good while. I think the majority of hers may wait until the deadline of Jan.

slalomsuki · 27/10/2020 17:42

@NotDonna his 5th choice was Liverpool John Moores. Way below his predicted grades but the school wanted all applicants to put one low grade course in. He is waiting to hear from Cardiff, Swansea, Liverpool and Strathclyde.

DS1 applies 2 years ago and had 4/5 offers back in a fortnight. The 5th one came in in March and he had pretty much discounted them by then as he'd need to applicant days at his first and second choice.

NotDonna · 27/10/2020 18:35

slalomski good choices! Is St. John’s his insurance? What subject? Is Strathclyde a 4 year degree?

slalomsuki · 28/10/2020 08:34

@NotDonna he chose all 4 year degrees as he is planning to do a placement year for all the English/Welsh universities. I doubt he will go to Strathclyde due to the distance but he liked the look of the course so stuck it in. He's applied for Business analytics and Accountancy and Finance across the 5. I"m not sure of the mix but the school said it was a good idea and left his options open a bit longer assuming he gets offers from them all.

Where and what are yours thinking about doing?

calculatorqueen · 28/10/2020 20:46

DS now has 3 offers for economics, Exeter, York and Birmingham. Birmingham is an attainment offer so 3Cs. If he gets no offer from Oxford then I think Birmingham could be the one. DH and I went to Brum but he still seems keen.

NotDonna · 29/10/2020 00:00

Good on DS calculatorqueen!! My DD applied to Birmingham too for Economics but she’s not received anything from anywhere yet. Only contact she’s had is from Bristol who have said lots of high calibre applicants so offer on hold. No news is good new I guess.

Baaaahhhhh · 29/10/2020 11:22

calculatorqueen 3 offers already, that's brilliant.

DD is booked on Exeter virtual open day tomorrow, so we will have to get our butts out of bed a little earlier than recently, having been enjoying a lie in these last few days. She looked at their subject specific days as well, and History has some coming up, but between 11 and 12 on a Friday is not really very helpful, unless she can absent herself from classes.

@NotDonna Thank you. I'm sure your DD will hear soon. Birmingham said 15 working days for an offer and that was exactly what it was. He got an initial acknowledgement and then another e mail stating that his application was being processed, he then got the offer a couple of days later.
slalomsuki · 29/10/2020 21:17

We have 3 offers so far, one high, one medium and one low at the moment. DS is erring on the side of the medium one at the moment and I must admit the campus looks great. He is doing an EPQ alongside his A levels so we have a bit of leeway if required in clearing with that.

slalomsuki · 29/10/2020 21:18

Should also say we discounted Birmingham as it's pretty much on our doorstep.

EasyPants · 29/10/2020 22:03

Does anyone remember the website where one can check the historic percentage number of applicants who got certain a’levels Grades by course and uni? Keep racking my brain and can’t come up with it.

EasyPants · 29/10/2020 22:18

Never mind, I’ve found it, although down at the moment.

Pumpkintopf · 29/10/2020 22:21

@EasyPants what was it, out of interest?

EasyPants · 29/10/2020 22:35

@Pumpkintopf here it is Offer rate calculator, but they’ve taken it off line for now.

Pumpkintopf · 30/10/2020 00:50

Thank you!

NotDonna · 30/10/2020 15:27

Wonder why it’s offline? I wonder if it’ll be a bit skewed for 2020 anyway and if there’s an option of looking at 2019?

Baaaahhhhh · 30/10/2020 16:16

NotDonna I thought that must be the case, as they accepted almost everyone regardless of grades in 2020 - I am sure it has produced some weird/meaningless stats. They could just not publish those though.... still useful to know the previous years.

EasyPants · 30/10/2020 19:51

I hope they bring it back online soon. DS found it very useful last year in deciding wether he could potentially get an offer from a university who had given him an offer higher than his predicted grades.

cologne4711 · 30/10/2020 20:07

Whatuni has grades by subject - so not an offer calculator but you can eg look up a course eg chemistry at Bristol and it tells you that the typical offer is eg AAA and the typical grade and subject profile of a student is physics, chemistry and maths all at grade B (not a real example, just made it up). Sometimes the grade profile matches the typical offer but more often it is a bit under.

Revengeofthepangolins · 30/10/2020 23:20

@cologne4711. I can’t quite remember what site I found the what grades do people really have stats on, but I think it was the one you quoted buy I wasn’t totally convinced because at the bottom it would say something like “survey if 212 students”. The number was never much higher than that and suggested a self reporting element. Plus contextual offers will tend to pull the average down in a way that isn’t relevant to standard applicants. But mostly the sample seemed too small.

Revengeofthepangolins · 30/10/2020 23:23

But maybe I was overthinking it :-)

cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 15:31

Yes I did wonder how reliable it was. But it gave an idea anyway, in some cases the students had the grades in the typical offer and in others they didn't, so I suppose the trend is accurate, even if the grades are not spot on.

Pumpkintopf · 01/11/2020 21:57

@cologne4711 I've tried to find this on what uni but can't see where they list it -could you post an example link if possible please? Thanks

Baaaahhhhh · 04/11/2020 13:50

DD now got three offers in hand. Her second, third and fourth favourites, so she is very happy.

Majaso12 · 04/11/2020 14:04

What subject is that for, for Warwick? My dd applied on the 24th September and still hasn’t gone one. We’re getting worried now.
