Applying for uni in 2021...

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

My son has had his final offer - so 5 out of 5 which is good. He has no clue about preferences though - I think not knowing what is going to happen about exams and TAGs and CAGs and whatever isn't helping.

He's got one virtual open day booked, I will persuade him to book the others.

poppycat10 · 18/02/2021 13:01

@Beetlesand

Yes Dd was fretting after receiving accommodation prompt from York before she had other offers in/ before firming or insuring . She’s holding her nerve
Yes ds had an offer from York too and had the accommodation prompt but they are asking for the highest grades of any of his offers so I don't think it's likely he'll accept their offer anyway.
LeiatheSchnauzer · 18/02/2021 14:43

Great news about all the offers!
Dd1 did the virtual offer holder day at Durham yesterday and really enjoyed it. Almost definitely going to be her firm unless she has a massive wobble with her upcoming grades, in whatever form that takes (roll on Monday).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/02/2021 14:57

DS1 has now got an offer from Exeter too so he is increasingly happy with the world.

Beetlesand · 18/02/2021 15:11

Oh I am glad some more offers are coming through for our dc. They deserve some nice news.
@LeiatheSchnauzer.. Dd also did virtual offer holders day. Really enjoyed it - particularly the college bit later on. Asked lots of questions and was very animated after . I think she’s looking forward to firming it up .

LeiatheSchnauzer · 18/02/2021 20:29

@Beetlesand, yes, she loved the college part, even turned her camera on for part of it!
The course element was really long for an online thing (from 1-4pm) but really interesting and the department team were very engaging.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 18/02/2021 20:32

@boys3, that motivational factor is really helpful right now, isn't it. Anything to keep them looking forward is such a boost.

Hi all

We have finally deferred entry to 2022, thanks to everyone who advised us to email the uni. Just a couple more Qs, if dd doesn’t make the grades, can she go through clearing and accept an offer but defer it to 2022? Also if she drops a grade but still gets accepted by her first choice uni, will they still allow her to defer?

Appreciate your help.

SATSmadness · 20/02/2021 07:37

@ROZ12

Clearing is used by Unis every year to allocate unfilled places for courses starting that year, so in this case 2021 start dates. On that basis I can't see how letting your DD accept and defer a clearing place would work for any Uni.

On the other point about dropping a grade, I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be able to advise in due course.

SeasonFinale · 20/02/2021 09:14

@ROZ12 - if she drops a grade the uni will make a decision whether to still accept her for the deferred place. So on results day when UCAS updates if she has dropped a grade she will see on track whether she now has an unconditional deferred place or whether it remains conditional and what those conditions are. It will rather depend on which uni and which course and how competitive each is.

ROZ12 · 20/02/2021 20:06

@SATSmadness

Thank you for the reply, can my dd enter clearing 2022 then?

ROZ12 · 20/02/2021 20:13

@SeasonFinale

Thank you I guess if she drops a grade it is more likely she will accepted this year but it’s too late now she has deferred. I’m guessing deferred places you have to make the exact grades on the conditional offer.?

SeasonFinale · 20/02/2021 20:48

Not always. @Roz12 They will know how many they usually take with lower than standard grades which is why I mentioned it will depend on uni and course. I know people who have had AAB offers accepted on deferred at ABB.

ROZ12 · 21/02/2021 00:22

@SeasonFinale
Thank you I guess it’s a wait and see!

pistachioicecream · 22/02/2021 15:05

Does anyone have any idea which day this week Ofqual will be make their announcement about A-levels and GCSE's?

I can only find a message on Twitter saying next steps will be published w/c 22nd Feb.

Just wondered if anyone knew anymore!

poppycat10 · 22/02/2021 16:41

I think it may be Thursday.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 22/02/2021 19:13

I came on here to ask the same question!

SeasonFinale · 22/02/2021 19:51

They said week starting 22 February. One time they said week starting [date] GW announced it at 22.30 on the Friday so it's just a waiting game I'm afraid.

GreenNdYellow · 22/02/2021 21:53

Don't want to alarm, but has anyone heard about Bristol withdrawing offers today? I think it might be for engineering (this is coming from DS's group chat - screen shot was taken). Apparent reason being that Bristol need to reallocate due to impact of Covid.

This could all be nonsense, but just wondering. Lots of jittery kids in a Bristol group chat this eve. @SeasonFinale - any murmurs from your viewpoint?

Tenpastseven · 23/02/2021 07:39

@GreenNdYellow goodness, that would be worrying indeed!

KittyMcKitty · 23/02/2021 08:19

@GreenNdYellow can they do that? I thought fair allocation was Bristols reasoning for the long holds? DS been on hold for 2 courses since mid November.

DahliaMacNamara · 23/02/2021 09:25

Withdrawing offers already made, and/or in some cases accepted? Can they do that?

SeasonFinale · 23/02/2021 09:34

I doubt that there have been withdrawals and haven't heard of any. They haven't even finished allocating. Perhaps the student means that they will be making fewer offers the same way most prestigious unis are as they anticipate more people making their grades.

poppycat10 · 23/02/2021 09:42

@DahliaMacNamara

Withdrawing offers already made, and/or in some cases accepted? Can they do that?
I don't think so. What they can do is refuse to make any more, I suppose.
KittyMcKitty · 23/02/2021 09:46

I don't think so. What they can do is refuse to make any more, I suppose

Could they do that under the fair consideration rule?
