Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

We have 4 offers in now within 2 weeks of the application. Just waiting for one now which is the outside choice. Have told DS not to rush and we can go to visit 2 or 3 university cities over the next few months lockdown allowing.

Could I ask people whose children have received offers already, were they applying to Oxbridge/ Med/ Vet schools so fast track applications? My DS did his application 10 days ago but still waiting for reference from school and then the school will submit it. Getting a bit worried now that this seems to be taking awhile. Maybe he needs to chase it with school? Thank you.

quest1on · 06/11/2020 14:24

I just to say, DS has applied to Bath and hasn’t heard. He doesn’t know anybody who has either.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 06/11/2020 14:36

Dd1 put her application in on 19th October (so, not Oxbridge application) and she has had two offers so far (Leeds and Bristol) which she is delighted with. She has also applied to Bath but hasn't heard from them yet.

NotDonna · 06/11/2020 19:44

DD’s was submitted 21st October and not heard from anywhere. She’s had ‘we are processing your application’ and ‘we have high calibre applicants and want to give them all due consideration’ type confirmations. Although it feels like a decade ago it has only been a couple of weeks. I’m very impatient.

FlowFlow7722 · 06/11/2020 19:59

Dd has been predicted ABB, but one of the teachers has said she may up her B to an A. So we are waiting on that. Is it better to apply sooner rather than later?

DD’s choices so far are;
AAB/ABB Birmingham
ABB Royal Holloway
ABB Loughborough
BBB UEA

Birmingham is her absolute favourite hence waiting for the upgraded grade.

Is she missing something by not getting her application in now?

NotDonna · 06/11/2020 20:52

As long as it’s in by Jan 15th it doesn’t matter. They have to give every applicant a fair go.

NotDonna · 06/11/2020 20:59

Posted too soon. She doesn’t need that second B to be an A though does she? If your DD thinks the A is realistic then I’d ask the teacher to predict now. But if she thinks it’s a stretch then maybe leave it be. Your DD probably knows deep down how realistic she’s being.

NotDonna · 06/11/2020 21:03

Is that 2 courses at Birmingham? 1 wanting AAB and the other ABB?
Even applying for an AAB with ABB predictions she could get the standard offer of AAB. So would still need to meet the offer regardless of predictions.

New to group - my DS just about to put his application in. Business at UEA, York and Exeter (the course at both campuses). Given he’s never visited any of the universities/cities it’s been an odd exercise.
Third time through the process for me and considerably less academic child, so worrying he’ll get rejections which won’t be good for his confidence....
Nice to hear the good reports on Norwich! Never been.

LaLaFlottes · 08/11/2020 10:35

@GaribaldiGirl my DD has applied to UEA and we did a little trip in the summer. The campus was really great and Norwich seemed such a lovely place

GaribaldiGirl · 08/11/2020 11:12

@LaLaFlottes - thanks, that’s good to hear. A friends son started there this year and is enjoying despite restrictions. UEA are handling pandemic with more care for students than Edinburgh - where my DD2 started in September and came home after a few weeks of disproportionate restrictions.

LaLaFlottes · 08/11/2020 11:23

@GaribaldiGirl that’s good to know about UEA and COVID. They do have a lot of lovely outdoor space which must make it easier for the students too.
Sorry to hear about your DD’s experience of Edinburgh. Such a shame - fabulous city though so I hope it will improve for her.

Lara53 · 10/11/2020 18:40

DS is hoping his UCAS form will get sent this week. He has final meeting to fact check with Head of Careers tomorrow. He wants to study Computer Science and predicted grades are A, A, A. He is applying for Leeds, Southampton, Loughborough, Lancaster and Oxford Brookes.
@cologne4711 I've tried to find this on what uni but can't see where they list it -could you post an example link if possible please? Thanks
Sorry I didn't see this sooner but if you are still looking it wasn't What Uni, it was the Uni Guide!

NotDonna · 10/11/2020 21:17

2 offers in today. Smile

Baaaahhhhh · 10/11/2020 22:39

NotDonna Great news. Looks like many more Unis are starting to offer now, even offers from notoriously late Durham. It's nice when they start rolling in.

calculatorqueen · 11/11/2020 06:58

That's great news @NotDonna. DS got his offer from Bath last night for economics, did your DD? It was a standard A*AA. Other than Oxford he's received them all now, Bath, Exeter, York and Birmingham.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 11/11/2020 06:59

Congratulations @NotDonna 's dd! Dd1 got a contextual offer from her first choice Durham on Monday and she is over the moon. She had been expecting a long wait so it was a fantastic surprise. Hope everyone else's DC start getting the offers they want soon, it's such a relief when it happens.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 11/11/2020 07:00

And congratulations @calculatorqueen!

NotDonna · 11/11/2020 07:21

@calculatorqueen no news from Bath as yet. The offers were Bristol A*AA and Birmingham AAB -they’ve reduced it from AAA as she has maths (hopefully). Birmingham will be an amazing insurance and she’ll be delighted to go there. IF Bath do offer it’ll be a tough choice between there and Bristol. She’s been to Bath but not Bristol but I think the latter has the edge for her. A pro for Bath is placement year though. Either way she has 2 offers. The ones she really wanted so very happy.

NotDonna · 11/11/2020 07:23

Huge congrats to the offer from Durham @LeiatheSchnauzer - they often offer v late! Congrats to calculator DC! Huge congrats to all the DC!!!

LeiatheSchnauzer · 11/11/2020 07:41

Thank you! Dd1 has an offer from Bristol too and she is considering that as insurance despite the accommodation risk as she really loved it. Still waiting for Bath and York.

calculatorqueen · 11/11/2020 07:52

@LeiatheSchnauzer Accomodation is a worry isn't it for the insurance choice. If DS gets an offer from Oxford (very slim chance!), he'll probably put York as his insurance. I think they said they have accommodation for everyone, regardless of firm or insurance. If he doesn't get into Oxford he'll probably go with Birmingham, he has a CCC attainment offer so wouldn't need an insurance. Although I've heard that Birmingham can be a bit of a nightmare for accommodation even if you firm Confused.

@NotDonna Birmingham would be a great choice. DH and I went there, so we're slightly biased. Has the benefit of a lovely campus with easy access to the city.

NotDonna · 11/11/2020 07:54

Does your DS really want Oxford @calculatorqueen? One of my friend’s DD has applied to Cambridge but she’s actually not fancying it. I incorrectly assumed if oxbridge is on a DD list it must be their fave.
schnauzer what course is your DD applying for? Did she see Bristol at a proper open day? I’d love to know what she liked about it. I’ve not been but heard it’s quite spread out, which would put me off - I’d be a campus type. But it’s not me who’s going.
