Following on from thread 8 which filled up in just 72 hours.

OP posts:
Dunlurking · 20/08/2019 20:20

justasking the queue for Bettys was massive so we just went to the smaller shop and bought some cakes to bring home for my parents.

Thanks NewModelArmy, Piggy, JennyWreny, Clankboing, Soonerthan. FrameyMcFrame wouldn’t have been me - I wasn’t allowed to get into conversations - dd would have considered it too embarrassing! Hope you had a good day.

Dunlurking · 20/08/2019 20:38

Just catching up on the thread. Congratulations to your dd @ZandathePanda for her remark success.

@RedHelenB is that Liverpool private accommodation that you found actually student housing? One of dd’s friends has been allocated a hall costing £8400, supposedly, which she can’t possibly afford so it would be nice if I could let her know there are alternative suppliers. She’s hoping to swap on some FB group atm.

triptrapdollydumpling · 20/08/2019 20:51

Lovely day in York for us too. Indeed, the queue for Betty’s was a sight to behold!

JennyWreny · 20/08/2019 21:06

Hmm. Was thinking about going to Betty's on move in day with DH once we've settled her in and she doesn't need us anymore . . . . . might have to rethink as queues probably crazy on a Saturday.

Any York DCs have their accommodation details yet? DD knows what college and type of accommodation but not the actual block yet. The deposit she paid has gone out of her bank account now but she hasn't heard anymore since then. Apparently some people on the FB groups she's lurking on know which block etc they are in but she thinks that may be people who had u/c offers.

RedHelenB · 20/08/2019 21:07

@dunlurking if she types in private halls liverpool a load will come up. The cheaper rooms are going reasonably quickly I think as one hall only had premium left but that would still.be cheaper! You can book viewings online, my dd actually wanted to see in person and is now getting very giddy about going.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2019 21:09

Is Taylor's still there? Always preferred that to Bettys. Three and a half years in York and I never sat down in Bettys!!

milesandmilesandmileandmiles · 20/08/2019 21:09

Try the Betty's at Harlow Carr, not the city centre one, it's quieter. Smile

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2019 21:11

Ah, no - looks like it's been subsumed into the Bettys brand.

triptrapdollydumpling · 20/08/2019 21:11

We know what College and type but that’s all at the moment. Find out more details next month I believe.

TapasForTwo · 20/08/2019 21:20

That's brilliant news about the remark Zanda.

The green areas and water features at York are nice, but the buildings are hideous. DD just didn't take to York at all. We only live an hour away to visit York quite frequently, so I think the novelty of being somewhere new would wear off very quickly.

ZandathePanda · 20/08/2019 21:38

Thank you everyone today for the well dones for my Dd. Fingers crossed for everyone else going through remarks too. Good Luck!

bigTillyMint · 20/08/2019 22:07

Great result Zanda!

I was really pleasantly surprised when I visited the York campus with DS - we loved the space. And at least the buildings are purpose built. I was A bit shocked by one halls we saw though - looked like it hadn't been renovated since it was built 😁

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/08/2019 22:34

Are you going to the parent talk on moving in day, Jenny ? You have to book (free) tickets for it on the website.

DD has been sent a 'what to do' list to work her way down inc uploading certain documents/passport photo etc beforehand. Seems more sensible than trying to get it all done on the day.

JennyWreny · 20/08/2019 23:05

triptrapdollydumpling Thanks for the info - I guess next month potentially isn't too far away (end of next week). DD keen to find out where she's going to be!

DrMadelineMaxwell I hadn't booked a ticket for the parent talk but have now (messes up my Betty's plans though), thanks for mentioning it. DD booked moving in slot yesterday and we already have hotel booked the night before thanks to tip from someone (possibly you) last week.

ProlificLurker · 21/08/2019 00:13

If anyone is having to move their DC by train within the Northern Rail area, they’ve got a flash sale on at the moment with some journeys £0.10 (each way). Might be worth a look if you can be flexible on times.

www.northernrailway.co.uk/sale

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/08/2019 00:46

We haven't booked the moving in slot yet but she's
Going to be in Vabvrugh and the webpage seemed to have different choices for different buildings and we don't know which one she's in yet. Unless I've missed that...Its so much to keep track of!

JennyWreny · 21/08/2019 00:53

DrMadelineMaxwell The links for the different accommodation for Vanbrugh all go to the same booking page (apart from Fairfax House which is catered) and has it’s own booking page.

JennyWreny · 21/08/2019 01:04

ProlificLurker That is a great deal. We might have to use the train for one of us on the way so we can put the back seats of our car down to fit everything in (quite a small car).

milesandmilesandmileandmiles · 21/08/2019 06:43

The York buildings may be considered hideous, but they have recently been given Grade Two listed status. I quite liked them, for the period in which they were built. Smile

I don't think Dd knows what block yet either, she's at work so I'll check when she's back.

Itscoldouthere · 21/08/2019 07:01

@Dunlurking re student finance and DSA, I would suggest phoning.
Initially they wouldn’t accept my DS dyslexia DX as it was pre 16 when I first applied. Once I spoke to them and got put through to someone senior, they agreed that they would accept my medical information and I didn’t actually need post 16 dyslexia assessment/DX.
Once they have approved your medical information you go and have an assessment (you can choose a centre near where you live) that information/their recommendations are then sent to student finance for approval.
DS had his assessment last week, I’m not sure how long it will take to hear if it’s been approved or not.

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 07:06

Anyone who dislikes those buildings at York or the Ziggurats at Norwich has no taste.

TapasForTwo · 21/08/2019 07:14

It wasn't just the buildings that put DD off. She just didn't want to go to a campus university. She had already decided where she wanted to go, and visiting York just confirmed it. She preferred the course elsewhere as well

I clearly have no taste then Dangling Grin
I just don't find 1960s architecture attractive.

Ragwort · 21/08/2019 07:15

To the Poster who asked about timetables, if your DC has enrolled at the Uni there might be a link to the timetable?

I was checking my DS’s emails & found a link to welcome seminars and workshops during Fresher’s week and some pre-course project work to be started Grin, not sure my DS would have bothered to look Hmm.

Mine has your DS seen the initial timetable - he might be more organised than my DS Grin.

Tip - Curry’s will give up to £100 if trading in an old lap top when buying a new one, sadly DH had just destroyed a very old lap top we had.

Danglingmod · 21/08/2019 07:16

Then you're wrong (said with massive tongue in cheek Grin)

Dunlurking · 21/08/2019 07:17

@Itscoldouthere thank you so much! We’ll ring and see what we need to do from there. Dd has unfortunately booked multiple trips away with friends now so I hope we can fit any appointments around them. Otherwise she’ll have to sort one out when she gets to York.

@RedHelenB thank you for that tip. I’ll pass it on.

Enjoying the conversations about York buildings, and Betty’s.
