Exeter offers : incompetent or arrogant?

TalkinPeace · 25/03/2016 22:42

DD submitted her form last October
Exeter have still not had the courtesy to send an offer (the other four Unis all have)
when phoned they said

  • no offers have been issued (bollocks as DDs friends have theirs)
  • offers will be made by end of December (bollocks as its now late march)
  • offers will be made right after the UCAS cut off date (bollocks as it was in January)
  • offers will be made by the end of March ........

Exeter are arrogant liars
the word needs to go round

Talking, I do sympathise.

Bitchy and coco, I suspect not, because he has an offer, albeit in a subject he doesn't want to do on a campus he doesn't want to be on, but which Is part of the HEI he applied to. But you are right, we should check. ( it was this offer that made him suspect that something was very wrong as the offer was well below his predictions.)

Any other suggestions from parents, academics, teachers on bolstering confidence, application to work, finding the right course through clearing, gap year projects, etc, v v helpful.

Exeter were the last to offer DS last year, I think it was February but could've been March.
He's there and loving every second. Don't rule it out because of the application process.

Orlando if he rejects his offer he can go straight into Extra. He really should have done this asap as others in extra will be snaffling up any current spaces. His school should have suggested this too by the way....

OrlandaFuriosa · 27/03/2016 19:12

His school did not even tell me about extra. They have, yo be fair, asked if he can transfer for non wanted course to wanted course at end of year 1, by which time he would have missed a year. .

He still hasn't heard from UCL.

I have a feeling that staff cuts at Exeter have been recently rather extreme and may be impacting on admissions (Exeter staff cuts were in the news a while ago).

However you (op) are being a bit unreasonable. Your DD is not entitled to receive an offer. I appreciate the wait may not be the most enjoyable thing though.

DD is of course not "entitled" to an offer.
A rejection is an equal option
but why the 5 month wait when others applying for the same course got their offers (and rejections) before Christmas?
And why the utterly inappropriate response to bi monthly requests for updates?
this call is being recorded for training purposes and all that

talkin, did your DD really make bi monthly requests for updates?

I get why she is nervous, but I really don't think that was a great idea. It won't affect whether or not she'd get an offer, but it's pestering like crazy.

Maybe it was easier to make the decisions on other candidates? It's not fun for anyone involved, but some decisions are surely going to be easier to make than others.

What was inappropriate about the replies, anyway? (I don't understand the struck out bit?).

As I said earlier, my DD2 applied in early November to Brighton, attended an interview in mid Feb, then .......nothing. 30 April and still nothing. I didn't contact them and neither did she. What difference would it have made? She had better offers anyway.

My DD1 just did not like the campus on the hill at Exeter. She felt it was just like school. The open day did not give a good impression and she did not feel it was right for her. The course was no better or different to any other course. It is a very popular destination at her school so she wanted to look. There was a very strong impression on the open day of very invested parents. As bad as Oxbridge!

Jeanne
Please explain how every other month is pestering like crazy

the content of the replies is in the OP
if Exeter have anything like decent database records they know from this thread exactly who she is
and I'll expect the rejection through on Tuesday
if its still silent I'll know they need much better IT and PR systems

It's excessive, talkin. Hugely so.

I don't know how else to explain.

I would say a couple of requests for info, by this stage, would be fine, and three or more would begin to see like overkill. To get in touch every two weeks is absolutely absurd IMO.

I'm not posing this to make your DD feel bad, and god knows she's a teenager, but I'm slightly stunned you didn't think to tell her this wasn't a good idea.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 27/03/2016 19:58

Btw, no, they wouldn't reject her for pestering, or for having a mum who started this thread, and making comments like 'I'll expect the rejection' sounds absolutely daft - I hope you're joking (surprisingly hard to tell on this thread!).

Yes, because all the Admissions staff monitor MN, and are just out to get your DD and thumb their noses at you. Biscuit

Well I'm at a loss.

I though the DD had decided against Exeter based on her experience and that is was No Big Deal because she had other offers she preferred anyways Confused.

Grin

I love the image sun. They're probably sitting there at the moment (on Easter Sunday ...) like this:

Prof Admin Person 1: 'But, but, the girl is brilliant! Inspired! And so qualified!'

Prof Admin Person 2: 'Yes ... but her mum's being a bit of a dick on MN about us, and you know how that'll look on the TEF in 2020.'

thatcoldfeeling · 27/03/2016 20:16

You call twice a month!?! Can you imagine if every applicant did that? What a way to waste people's time!
And as for thinking admissions staff will be cross referencing MN posts with logged communications - I think you definitely have a skewed understanding of how well resourced they are! Hmm

Report
Sunshowercap · 27/03/2016 20:22

TBF, the OP said they've called every second month. It's still a bit excessive. And completely bonkers to think that somehow, Admissions staff at Exeter will be monitoring MN

they know from this thread exactly who she is

That's just paranoid.

Report
fastdaytears · 27/03/2016 20:24

Gone away and come back to find the thread has gone insane. Exeter will not reject your DD on the basis of a MN thread.

I never know if bi-monthly means every 2 months or two weeks. It really bugs me. I should learn.

Report
JeanneDeMontbaston · 27/03/2016 20:24

Oh, I read 'bi monthly' as every two weeks, twice a month. It can mean both, but you're right, she means every two months, so I am sorry about that.

It's still OTT, though.

Now wrong with Exeter's IT systems - they use the same as everyone else. But they are manned by people. Over worked, underpaid, tired, people. Who have offered a few hundred, rejected a few hundred, and are trawling through the last few hundred, setting exams, continuing trawling the last few hundred, marking essays, still reading PSs of the last few hundred, squeezing in some meetings, reading journals, still trawling through the last few hundred applications. Oh an maybe doing some family stuff or caring for an ill child or relative.
