Anyone else got this Virus - ongoing Nausea - I have had it for 4 weeks

Just been to the doctor. I have had Nausea now for 4 weeks. The doctor says it is a virus and I should be OK soon. He said that unlike the Norovirus this one can linger for a while. Was wondering if anyone else had anything similar and if so how long did it last. One good thing I suppose I didn't put on any weight over Christmas!!, but I would just love to feel healthy again.

Hello everyone,

It saddens me but I seem to have joined the club of suffering. Haven't been at it for as long as you were but first started feeling off nearly 2 weeks ago after eating out. Felt a bit odd the same evening, then was okay the next day but the day after it hit me 100%. Started off with feeling hot, having cold sweat, dizziness and feeling very sick. Took good 2 hours to calm down to a bearable state, probably had some sort of panic attack as well.
Decided to be fasting a few days afterwards as I have completely lost any appetite, I could barely even get a sip of water inside me without instantly feeling nauseous again. Been feeling a bit better so I started introducing some food back, since I would only feel a little nauseous, no episodes of panic attack and big wave of sick, occassionally I would have a higher temperature but nothing too bad.

I have probably overdone it last Saturday and woke up in the middle of the night with severe diarrhea and feeling very sick again.
Went to GP on Monday to see if he could help, he took my temperature, blood pressure, wanted a stool sample and prescribed Dioralyte for the runny episodes.

Currently awaiting the test results - hopefully they come on Monday.
Have been feeling slightly better, still feeling very nauseous in the mornings. I have also noticed me being a bit more sensitive to smells. :(
But, severe sickness has hit me again a couple hours ago just after Ive eaten dinner and done the washing up.
I'm starting to feel helpless and I don't know if I can cope that long as you guys have...

starzen · 14/03/2020 22:33

Hi @Inertia1. I’m so sorry you are feeling sick too. It’s not a fun club to be a part of. What did your GP say they suspect is happening? At 2 weeks I was still thinking it was a virus or the aftermath of a virus. I am at 7 weeks tomorrow, and now I am not so sure. Thinking maybe a virus kicked off something else. My GP has said it can take some people weeks to get back to normal. I would give just about anything to be there again!

It’s not easy, but we are here to support you through it. Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones and it won’t last as long!

Inertia1 · 14/03/2020 22:43

Thank you for the support @starzen. It calmed me down a little to find this thread, that I'm not the only one feeling like this.

GP assumed it could be food poisoning and has been treating it as such for now, since it was basically my first thought as well.
He does not know about everything though, while I was fasting I started experiencing heartburn too which was very common around others in this thread as well. I'll be phoning Monday to see for the results and try and get a hold of him again.
It's really horrible and I wouldn't wish this to happen to anyone :(

starzen · 14/03/2020 23:09

It does help to find others experiencing the same thing, that’s for sure! I was elated to find this board. I think I am the newest member aside from you? It does sound a little like food poisoning to me too. If that is the case, you will know soon, and should be feeling better soon! Hopefully it’s not whatever the rest of us are experiencing.

Mine started with a day of diarrhea, nausea and a panic attack the next day, a week or two of loss of appetite nausea and aches all over. After that I just could not seem to get rid of the nausea and am still struggling with it.

It’s definitely the worst. I can’t seem to eat or drink enough calories even when I put all of my focus into it. My body is tired, emotional, losing weight. I struggle to enjoy things and have anxiety and depression because of it. Still have hope one day it will improve, but less than I did weeks ago.

Have tried medicine for acid reflux (I have heartburn but always thought it was mild), but it hasn’t helped at all. Probably going to a specialist in another week and a half.

Praying for all of us to get over this and feel better soon. It truly is miserable. Sad

Pebble21uk · 15/03/2020 09:25

Sorry you have joined us Inertia1 - does sound like it could be food poisining for you! But then mine started the day after a big meal out and my stool tests all came back negative! Hope you get some answers soon.

Anyone finding it hard to get enough calories in them - look at Ensure on Amazon - meal replacement drinks. I found at my worst it was hard going even to sip one, but even if it lasted me an hour or two at least it got some nutrition in me!

alwaysbusyandtired · 15/03/2020 09:32

Just updating - I had an endoscopy 10 days ago, they found a had a lax muscle which allows acid to come back up. Everything looked ok. This doesn't explain the pains I have though. I went back to GP and he said I have upset my digestive system by being constantly worried/stressed and he said the pain seems to be in my large intestine. He said it will settle down and to just try and get back to normal.

He changed my medication to omeprazole which helps more with the 'something stuck in my throat' feeling.

I am not convinced though, I have tried to go back to eating as normally as possible, went to work every day, didn't cry all week!! But the pains are just a constant reminder and they are not going away. Also this week, ended up constipated, had to take a mild laxative and now think I have piles!!!

Not sure how long to leave things before going back to see GP.

Melly1801 · 15/03/2020 10:58

Hi @starzen.

It’s horrible isn’t it? I feel rotten today. It’s definitely all stomach acid related now as my stomach doesn’t feel right. I think the omeprazole helped for a week as I felt fine, then for whatever reason that made me feel sick so I’m back to feeling sick either because of the tablets still, or because of the stomach acid.

What are you taking? I’m going to see my gp again next week and ask for something different as I can’t carry on like this. My virus started 2nd January, and I’m still feeling sick from whatever I am left with!!

Does anyone know why a virus can upset the stomach acid? Just want to understand how this is linked.

Pebble21uk · 15/03/2020 11:37

From what I've been told Melly the virus upsets your digestive system, so you don't eat normally. When you don;t eat normally your stomach gets out of kilter... it expects its normal food diet and produces acid accordingly. When you don't eat you therefore produce excess stomach acid which in turn causes acid reflux and indigestion. I think this is why general advice now when you have a stomach upset seems to be to keep eating if you can rather than fast!

starzen · 15/03/2020 13:20

So many messages this morning! @Pebble21uk, I am having the exact same problem. I’ve lost so much weight! Some days I can get an Ensure or a Boost Shake in, others I can barely stomach a few sips. I strive for at least 1,000 calories, but the past couple of weeks I have only been making 709 or so. It feels so hopeless. What you were saying about the acid makes sense - when I got sick I stopped eating for about a week, and it’s been downhill from there. But for some reason the acid reducers don’t seem to fix my problem either.

@Melly1801, right now I am taking Ranitidine. It was recalled, but is slowly coming back if they have any in your area. I was on it once before and it worked well. The PPI’s seem to be too strong for me. Famotidine gives me a racing heart and horrible anxiety. Ranitidine seems to be overall the most agreeable so far. Our problems started at similar times. I came down sick on January 24th.

@alwaysbusyandtired did they say how long it can take to settle down? It makes sense. The wait is just excruciating. I think my GP is sick of hearing from me already. Sad

Melly1801 · 16/03/2020 07:12

Thanks @starzen and @Pebble21uk that makes sense. I’m more anxious as I’ve not had any tests other than blood and stool so think it could be something more sinister! I’ve made a doctor’s appointment for tomorrow so will see what the one says.

I’m still having loose stools too! I’ve had a couple of days okay, but otherwise that’s been going on since the end of January so no idea what’s causing that too. I thought it was the omeprazole but I stopped taking that on Wednesday and it’s still happening 😩

starzen · 16/03/2020 14:44

@Melly1801 if it helps any, I’ve read that Omeprazole side effects can last up to 5-7 days so I would think it possible! I haven’t had as many tests either. I’ve had bloods taken a few times now, the breath test for H Pylori, and two abdominal ultrasounds. I am set to see a GI in about a week and a half, but with the state of the world right now I wonder if they will be cancelling appointments. I believe I’m still having side effects from my Omeprazole too - horrible taste in mouth after eating, which makes the nausea so much worse. Yesterday was a slightly more tolerable day which made me happy. But it doesn’t always seem to mean much in the long term.

Anybody else nervous about COVID after the stomach virus? My first thought was “great, another virus to make me feel awful for 8+ weeks!” Confused

Pebble21uk · 18/03/2020 08:51

Morning All, how is everyone? I'm back on very 'light food' at the moment. Don't know if it's still after the colonoscopy or just not good in general at the moment. It' a month until I have my follow up appt. with the GI consultant and who knows where we'll be by then.

I'm in a 'vulnerable' (asthma) group for the CV, so trying to isolate as much as poss at the moment. But yes starzen it feels like another thing on top to be equally anxious about. When this virus kicked off I had many CV symptoms (but not the respiratory ones, thank God) and I really can't face another one!!

Lulu0923 · 20/03/2020 09:50

It all started March the 1st it’s now March 20th. I have never felt so sick in all my life. It’s nausea mainly worse as soon as I wake up. And throughout the day. Gets better at night and I think I’m okay then boom. It hits be again. On March the 6th I thought it had gone away but then two days later it came back. I don’t think my stress and anxiety is helping. But I’m starting to think it’s something else. There’s no way a bug can lag this long surely ? I’m waiting for a stool sample so hopefully it will tell me something. I’m really starting to worry and wind myself up.

Pebble21uk · 23/03/2020 11:07

I know other events probably make this thread less active - I'm asthmatic and now classed in the shielded group which is frightening. But still having some gastric symptoms and still losing weight. I don't suppose anxiety about both things is helping now! I have a telephone doctor's appointment on Thursday, but what's next I have no idea as tests haven;t found anything. Not so much nausea now but lack of appetite, gurgling and the squits - great!! Hope you are all doing okay??

alwaysbusyandtired · 23/03/2020 15:46

I am having ok days and bad days. Managed to speak to a GP on the phone today as I can feel something in my back passage which i'm assuming is piles and having some lower back pain. They are not doing any face to face appointments so he's prescribing something for piles and totally ignored my back pain comment! He said to take a laxative to have a clear out. Looks like I am going to have to just carry on until this coronavirus outbreak is on its way out.

Its all so weird that this started and there is no end in sight at the moment Sad

Inertia1 · 23/03/2020 19:37

My stool tests for food poisoning came clear. Made me freak out even more. Tried to cope a few more days thinking it could just be anxiety related. I couldn't manage so I went back to get more answers.
They did check me out again and ended up diagnosing me with severe urine infection. Got prescribed a course of antibiotics and was relieved I finally know what this is all about.
I have finished them now, felt immensely better on Saturday but felt off yesterday again, ending up with yet another panic attack in the middle of the night. :(
Don't really know what to do anymore. Hope you guys are doing better.

Pebble21uk · 23/03/2020 21:26

Panic attacks are so dreadful... we just have to remember they can't harm us.
I've lost another 6lb since I last weighed myself a few weeks ago - not a huge drop, given it's over weeks - but still losing. I'm trying to have calorie rich food, but even with that I find eating enough hard.
I was also surprised when my food poisining tests came back clear, as it came on suddenly after a meal out the previous evening. I still think it's something systemic with me - infection or microbal or something as nothing 'looks' wrong with my digestive system on tests but something still isn't right! Take care all.

Lizandalfiedog · 24/03/2020 14:41

We'll have been well since end of Feb, now feeling dreadful again, think started again.with it since Saturday. I suppose the situation at moment prob making things worse.
How's everyone else. Wanna cry

Lizandalfiedog · 26/03/2020 21:06

How is everyone hope none have got carona virus.
Little better each day again since I started on the omeprazole again, just hope I can get some more.

Pebble21uk · 27/03/2020 14:51

Hi Lizandalfiedog, I'm still here. Pleased to hear you are doing a bit better again. I'm still very up and down. One day I will manage to eat 3 small meals and feel really pleased with myself and then the next morning I'll wake up with a gurgling tummy, the squits and no appetite at all - there's no knowing!!
I'm hoping to have a telephone appointment with my consultant next week. Nothing has been found wrong with my digestive system itself, but I think there is something 'in' my digestive system - some kind of bug I can't shake!
I do have a cough even though I have been self-isolating for two weeks now - but it;s a productive one and no other symptoms... but who knows! Just one more thing to worry about eh!
Stay safe!

Lizandalfiedog · 27/03/2020 16:01

I had a bit of a cough when I came home from visiting brothers, just makes me wonder if I've had it mildly, annoying that you can't test to see, unless your really I'll.
Little better everyday but I started the tablets straight away this time, think I was on them for one and half weeks last time, Monday will already be a week so here's hoping also started probiotics again, if anything might protect me a bit from other illnesses, but I deffo think it's the worry that set mine off started same way again with bad head.
Could be like IBS?
Hope you stay well.

Melly1801 · 28/03/2020 12:05

Hi everyone,

I’m still here too!

Got some lower dose omeprazole and have been taking that for over a week. Hasn’t caused any sickness so far and it’s been 10 days. Still get the acid feeling and taste sometimes, but seems slightly better.

I’m working from home so I’m not having any anxious thoughts about feeling sick at work so that’s helping.

Doubt I’ll get my camera procedure done any time soon as understandably they’re cancelling non urgent procedures.

No symptoms of covid-19 yet, but who knows if that will be next 😩

Hope you’re all staying safe (and not feeling sick!)

Pebble21uk · 01/04/2020 17:51

Hi All, well I finally have my consultation (by phone) tomorrow with the GI consultant who did all my tests. The tests started in Feb and finished 3 weeks ago (last thing I did before locking down!) so tomorrow I get to talk it all out with him!

I'm still up and down. Had a couple of really bad days last week but then picked up again, but it keeps on repeating itself. I'm taking antibiotics for a chest infection at the moment (hopefully not covid!) so it'll be interesting to see if they have any positive or negative effect on things.

Hope you're all doing okay - stay safe!

Lulu0923 · 04/04/2020 10:24

I had this thing every morning for a few days and it went then it came back. It had been gone for about a week and a half. Yesterday morning I woke up with a horrible stomach ache and thought to myself oh no not this again 😒😒. I have woke up today horrible stomach ache being sick and still really soft stools. I don’t know what to do at this rate. I’m so stressed and worried because I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I had a stool sample and that game back negative. They keep telling me gastroenteritis. Surely it’s not like this ? What should I do ? I’m driving myself mad

Iyab · 17/04/2020 21:25

I’m so happy to have found this thread. I am going out of my mind. I’ve had this horrible nausea for 4 weeks now. It started with flu like symptoms no but with no stomach symptoms. I thought it will go in a few days but here we are 4 weeks later. My Gp said it was viral, another doctor said it could be peri menopausal. I’ve had my ears checked. I just wish it will go away. It’s making me so anxious depressed and miserable.
