Anyone else got this Virus - ongoing Nausea - I have had it for 4 weeks

Just been to the doctor. I have had Nausea now for 4 weeks. The doctor says it is a virus and I should be OK soon. He said that unlike the Norovirus this one can linger for a while. Was wondering if anyone else had anything similar and if so how long did it last. One good thing I suppose I didn't put on any weight over Christmas!!, but I would just love to feel healthy again.

It sounds as though your through the worst of it, if anything like me you might get some big tummy cramps and lots of wind and that should be it. Try and eat small meals /snacks and drink plenty.

I went for an abdominal scan this morning so will wait for results and colonoscopy in process of being booked. I feel fine though and not expecting abnormal results. Beginning of December I would not of felt as though there was nothing wrong, I actually thought it was something a lot more serious but I know I'm ok. Since this started middle of November I've had numerous trips to doctors and stomach virus or flu was never mentioned, it was a case of just referring me for further investigations so that heightened my anxiety and made it a lot worse. If I'd of known it was this I would of just rode it out but I suppose with it going on for six to eight weeks it didn't seem normal. Glad your feeling better, it's certainly a Christmas / New Year we will remember.

DishingOutDone · 12/01/2020 23:00

Can I just hop in quite late to the "party"?! I've had similar - had what I thought was a stomach bug late November, nausea and bloody diahorrea for 48 hours I thought that was completely normal, followed by constipation, again thought it normal. Then I still had constipation 3 weeks later and then dark blood in stool and a horrible feeling in my stomach and ribs like I had a brick in my chest. Lost 5lbs over christmas! I've had the FIT test its come back positive for blood, also ordinary blood tests show inflammation.

Obviously very worried, have endoscopy booked for February and colonoscopy for March as GP doesn't think its serious, but trying to bring it forward. My GP initially suggested IBS (its her go-to diagnosis for everything from an eye infection to a broken toe Hmm ) but its not saying anything now. I'm not very calm with this sort of thing!!

Mimi85 · 13/01/2020 07:24

@DishingOutDone welcome...and what a party this is :/
When you're feeling unwell your need for answers is far more urgent than the pace Doctors work towards.
The symptoms I had were mainly intense ongoing nausea...on and off for weeks :(
Your symptoms sound like a stomach infection, have they prescribed any antibiotics? Do you feel unwell on a daily basis? Can you ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist so you're not reliant on your GP's diagnosis?
I've needed to find ways to manage the anxiety during these weeks with no answers & not feeling well - I use a mindfulness app & have been watching comedies...

supermariio · 13/01/2020 07:34

I'm surprised your doctor hasn't treated this as urgent especially after the FIT test. I never saw any blood so it was not visible only microscopic. This all sounds a bit different to what I have had re bloody stools. How are you feeling now? xx

Mimi85 · 13/01/2020 15:15

@DishingOutDone - any more updates, have you spoken to your Dr again?
My nausea and indigestion have gone but I'm left with mild diarrhea and tiredness...I'm guessing this means I'm on the mend? I no longer know :(

DishingOutDone · 13/01/2020 19:18

Hello fellow sufferers!! I have asked for a private referral but on the insurance I have its 4-6 weeks anyway. I am going to see if I can shift it round to the 2 week urgent referral tomorrow, quite a feat but I will try.

@supermariio - lets talk crap!! When my thing started it began with bloody diahorrea. I thought that was normal for a stomach upset, thinking now it wasn't.

Melly1801 · 13/01/2020 19:48

Well I felt fine for two days, then yesterday lunch time all of a sudden the sickness came back! And I’m feeling sick again today on and off 😢 really thought that was it. Can’t cope with another three weeks of this 😭

Mimi85 · 13/01/2020 20:49

@DishingOutDone - what did your GP diagnose you with? Do you have any ongoing symptoms? I know you want an answer quickly but the fact that the health care professionals are not concerned is a good sign.

@Melly1801 - are you writing from your holiday? Maybe you now just have regular traveler's stomach bug?

My symptoms now are: feeling knackered and a bit spaced out, occasional diarrhoea, still haven't regained my appetite.
@supermariio: did you feel tired/weak/ kind of dizzy/ spacy on the last stretch... Is this even a symptom or just acute anxiety

supermariio · 13/01/2020 23:08

The last few days was a weekend that I had booked to go away with my husband as we do every year at Christmas. I didn't want to spoil by cancelling so we went ahead. I remember feeling really strange, dizzy, light headed & nauseas, I also kept getting blurred vision. I tried eating something the morning to make myself feel better but it tasted so bland. It was when we came back I rang out of hours late at night, I was so scared after weeks of feeling terrible this was the penultimate and my body felt as though it was shutting down. I got an app at 1am but fell asleep on the settee so I rang them and they told me to call in the morning. I felt as though I had flu, the whole of my body was tingling. I did the school run, came home and had diarrhoea, from then on I started to feel better. How are you feeling now Mimi?

DishingOutDone · 13/01/2020 23:41

GP said she didn't know - initially she said IBS but when the blood tests and poo tests came back she referred me for non-urgent colonoscopy. She said it couldn't be anything bad as I am too young for bowel cancer. I'm late 50s ....!!! She just tends to say anything really.

I'm going to try to speed up the colonoscopy, but in the meantime I do have similar symptoms feel dizzy and entirely spaced out, but its been like this more or less since the last weekend in November - can it all last that long? GP never considered virus even though my very first symptom was an apparent stomach upset.

DishingOutDone · 13/01/2020 23:43

So @supermariio, when do you think your colonoscopy will be? Glad you have had a scan already was it an ultrasound?

Mimi85 · 14/01/2020 08:01

@supermariio no more nausea, no more indigestion. What I am left with is mild diarrhoea and horrible anxiety. I don't know where the symptoms end and the anxiety starts. I have still completely lost my appetite.
Maybe I should wait until tomorrow & make an appointment with the GP if the diarrhoea continues.
@DishingOutDone - it doesn't sound like you like your GP that much. I'm sure she knows what she's doing, but why don't you phone your surgery and ask for an appointment with another GP to get a second opinion?
Maybe our dizzy & spaced out feeling is anxiety or disturbed sleep

Melly1801 · 15/01/2020 00:50

@Mimi85 yes on holiday - I only don’t think it’s anything different as the symptoms are exactly the same with the light headedness, dizziness and sick feeling. I’ve never had anything like this before so would be weird to have two different viruses/bugs that are the same, but it’s a possibility I guess.

Was feeling better today but just went for dinner and all of a sudden I felt SO shaky and dizzy, I was physically shaking but as you’ve said, it’s hard to know what’s anxiety and what’s not. I think as soon as I start feeling sick I get so anxious that I’m going to pass out or something I can’t think about anything else so that makes it worse ☹️ Plus I’m terrified it’s something serious too. Hope you’re on the mend now xx

Melly1801 · 15/01/2020 00:51

@supermariio just had a similar experience at dinner - I felt so shaky, dizzy and light headed 😢 had to leave and go and sit in the car. So hard to eat anything when you feel like this but I know that doesn’t help. I was feeling alright for the majority of today as well!

Mimi85 · 15/01/2020 06:54

@Melly1801 I'm still not feeling well at all. I'm heading back to the GP today hopefully and going to ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist...
I'm sorry you felt so miserable at dinner... Hope you manage to enjoy some of your holidays x

Oldmum55 · 15/01/2020 09:24

Hi all. Hard to believe this thread it's still here, I was on it last year and I recognised my symptoms in so many of yours, especially the unwell feeling, lightheadness, stomach all over the place, etc that you are all describing. And the fact that you feel fine for a week then it's back! Like you towards the end wasn't sure where actual illness stopped and anxiety began. It took a battery of tests to reassure me even if no definite diagnosis was made, so by exclusion it was indeed confirmed it was a 'virus'!

Mimi85 · 15/01/2020 11:37

@Oldmum55 this must be the longest mumsnet thread there is...
It was comforting to hear of others people's experience with it.
@Melly1801 I ended up in A&E this morning because I just couldn't take it anymore... The Doctor was excellent, she said trust the test results. Those bloods/ stool tests would point to anything untowards. She said it's anxiety which has manifested into a host of symptoms including: weight loss, nausea, no appetite, diarrhoea.
My one recommendation to you is to keep eating, regardless of whether you want to or not

Melly1801 · 15/01/2020 12:58

@Mimi85 at least you got some reassurance, hopefully this will help speed up your recovery! It’s worrying how long it lasts for, so I’m sure anyone would be the same with the anxiety.

Thanks for the tip, that’s what I’m going to try and do. I’ve woken up feeling sick again but just tried to eat some crisps before I go to breakfast 🤢

Melly1801 · 23/01/2020 19:57

Three weeks today this started and it's still going on!! Please please please someone tell me it will go away soon?! I am going to make another doctor's appointment if it doesn't go by next week as I am getting more and more anxious about it.

It's as some other posters have said - I am fine for two days and think it's gone, then bam the next day the nausea and slight dizzy and shaking feelings return :(

Mimi85 · 23/01/2020 22:15

Hi Melly1801,
Mine became so bad and I became so anxious I have seen 9 Doctors and have run a lot of blood tests.
The A&E doctor told me my anxiety has now manifested itself into these accute physical symptoms. I stopped eating, I was heaving continually, I missed almost a week of work.
I am still getting physical symptoms but I am trying to hold onto the anxiety/ depression diagnosis and will hopefully see a good therapist soon.
Are you back in the UK? Have you considered that you now "just" have anxiety?

Melly1801 · 24/01/2020 06:44

Hi @Mimi85,

Thanks for commenting 😊 well I have no doubt the anxiety makes it worse, but I think I am still suffering from something as I don’t feel anxious then get sick, I get sick then feel anxious about it. It comes and goes as I said. Today I’ve woken up feeling how I did before I went away ☹️ I had a week off work before I went, so there’s no way I can have another week off after going away but I genuinely feel sick again. It’s awful 😭

I got back on Wednesday, so I am wondering if it’s the travel making it all worse too. Either way I just want to feel better!

Mimi85 · 24/01/2020 06:56

Melly@1801,
I feel sick then I feel anxious too...it seems like it's the wrong way around...What's your appetite like? Mine disappeared completely and I lost 5-6kg. I think what started out as a bug has now turned itself into a mental health problem.
My advice to you is don't wait until this has overtaken you to go to your GP, go now. In addition to doing blood tests & physical exams, mention that you don't know the correlation between these symptoms & anxiety....
Btw I have never felt physically sick when anxious before....this is all new to me

Melly1801 · 24/01/2020 07:19

Yeah I think it is the wrong way round, I know when I’m feeling anxious I feel more sick but the anxiety isn’t constant so it doesn’t explain it. Also as I had my bloods done when it first happened they showed the virus, and the first post on this thread was saying it had been going on for four weeks so I’m thinking it’s still that but I just can’t believe how long it’s been going on!

I hope you can get counselling or therapy soon and it helps you, I know how horrible anxiety can be xx

Mimi85 · 24/01/2020 07:48

Melly1801,
I did have a virus too, 6 weeks ago.... But the weird experience triggered lots of other stuff...
I would go back to the Dr just to put your mind at rest...
Are you taking probiotics?

Pebble21uk · 25/01/2020 10:44

I'm exceedingly late to the party here, but now you've probably all gone I have finally found my people!

What's being described is exactly what I have had for the last 5 weeks. Started day before Xmas eve with chills and temp, aches and pains, fatigue and gastric issues - nausea, diarrhea, bubbly tummy, no appetite. Dr said it was virus, another said possibly flu (although no chest / cough / cold - only sinus pain and headaches) but he said that he'd seen quite a few similar cases of flu without the typical 'cough cold' symptoms but gastric issues and diarrhea instead 'within the community'.

Anyway - 5 weeks later all the fever, aches etc have gone and all the gastric issues remain. I've only eaten white food for five weeks in small amounts - white bread, crackers, cake, crisps, cheese, pasta, bit of fish and chicken, bananas - no fibre, no fruit and veg - and I usually eat a pretty healthy diet so it does have me worried after all this time. I'm taking vitamin supplements now and kefir as well. But it has been awful and I'm so fed up with it. I've lost loads of weight.

Thought I was doing better this week then on Wednesday the nausea hit me like a train again. Again much worse in the morning and better later on in the day. Going back to the docs on Thursday, so fed up of it - and yes, the nausea makes me feel anxious too. I[ve just pushed two Tuc biscuits down and my tummy is making loud protesting noises. Also I really can't stomach coffee at the moment, yet I'm usually a coffee fiend.

I had something similar to this that lasted for a couple of months about 3 years ago - at the time they did tests for Inflammatory Bowel Disease but nothing was found - I do however still have high inflammation markers in my blood tests (some taken just before Xmas) so it does make me wonder.

Anyway - pleased to have found a bit of reassurance from this thread that I'm not alone!
