May I?

OP posts:
saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/08/2007 16:34

I had a nagging achilles problem a couple of years ago Veggiemum. It was cured by a combination of new running shoes, gel inserts and a change from running too much of the same type of route. (I can't remember now whether I was running too much flat or too many hills). It's on one of the older running threads - I'll have to check.

I'm not sure what truely sorted it - probably the shoes, I'd had some New Balance and I think they weren't quite right fo me. It does still flare occasionally but I find if I catch it early, frozen peas and inbuprofen sort it out quickly

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/08/2007 16:35

Sorry - speedy not veggiemum.

DoubleBluff · 21/08/2007 18:42

Speeedy I had achilles tendonitis from bad shoes and doing too much too soon.
I had to stop running completely and only started again when it was fully better.

Veggiemummy · 21/08/2007 19:19

aaahhhh i buprofen what we do without it.

did my run, ended up doing just under 6km (3.7miles) in 35min. had a prob with my ipod nikeplus thing so had to check actual distance on gmap (ipod said i did 5km gmap said closer to 6, i trust gmap)

feel good for it, though when i got home DH decided he didnt want to go rockclimbing so could have run further, oh well. yoga tomorrow night so will use the old muscles a bit more then, and will plan a nice 10km before the end of the week (there i've typed it so i have to do it now.

we are go to australia for 6 weeks in sept so now have the added incentive of looking resonable in my bikini.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 21/08/2007 20:08

I have absolutely nothing to report but can't bear this to disappear from my 'threads I'm on' list

I must try to get out tomorrow....

sibble · 21/08/2007 20:22

signing in here for the first time. I have signed up for a 10k fun mid October, have never run 10k's before . Did a 5k run in Feb first time ever so started training yesterday. Actually day1 of the training regime didn't go too well as dh came home armed with vino to celebrate his new job and would have been rude of me not to join in Anyway today is day2. Am hoping this thread will keep me on track.

mamamoo · 21/08/2007 21:36

Welcome to the thread Sibble!

Veggiemummy - accuracy of the nike plus is terrible isnt it - I read on the nike plus forums that you should have different sensors calibrated for different speeds? My long 7 mile run has been 7.8, 7.5 and 7.3 miles so far - and its a set loop...mmm might check on www.mapmyrun.co.uk

nappyneeds · 21/08/2007 21:57

nothing to report either - havent been out for first go at a run/walk plan yet- but was just wandering. Does anyone do heart rate monitoring with their running. I have a nike triax elite thing from ages ago which cost £200 (with software) and was gonna get going with that again. Also thought its pointless doing that yet until im properly running again or would it be usefull to track distances etc. Any thoughts....?

Veggiemummy · 22/08/2007 10:47

nike would say that, they do have got really good running specific clothes and stuff but they sure know how to make running almost as expensive as other sports like say, catarmaran sailing or car racing.

the problem was sort of mine, i couldnt find my foot sensor part and it is pretty closely calibrated to my stride so i borrowed DH's and it went weird, i was running at a good pace but it told me i was doing 9.44min/km which is almost walking i think, i moved it around a bit and it said i was doing 5.48 which was closer to the mark, but i was already a km into the run so it messed up my pacing a bit, but it was fine as i was more interested in just getting out and running.

found my sensor today so will be fine for next run.

pops how are you going havent heard from you.

hi sibble welcome there are a few here doing 10kms in sept.

Veggiemummy · 22/08/2007 10:51

nappyneeds- i dont really like HR monitors my DH loves them but i cant stand the strap around my chest. i havent tried those ones you can fit into your bra.

mamamoo · 22/08/2007 23:15

just go for it nappy needs- whether it be measuring HR, distance or speed any measure which you can set a goal against can be pretty motivational. I did the HR thing when I first took up running - did seem to work for me...then I moved onto the NIke SDM (model prior to yours - didnt have HR on it)....now I'm playing with Nike plus...sure will get bored after a while

Hey veggiemummy fancy doing a challenge with the Nike plus? Not sure how to do it mind but may be fun (how sad am I?)

I also had a bra which my polar HRM chest strap fitted in - triumph one I think - found it in an outlet store......wasnt supportive enough for my ample chest so had to wear a shock absorber over it!!

Veggiemummy · 23/08/2007 10:35

sounds good Mammamoo what did you have in mind, i have been thinking of cutting 2 and half mins off my 5km time (current time 27.30min) anyone else with nikeplus interested.

mamamoo · 23/08/2007 20:32

Still not sure how it works Veggiemummy - will have a look - examples of challenges I think are one who has run most miles in a month, first one to reach so many miles or race ones like both run 5k etc My race 5k pace is same as your training pace 27 min 30 and my fastest training 5k according to my nike plus is 29 min 31, so you def have edge on me with regard to speed.

Been out with DH and DD in buggy tonight for 25 min run around resevoir - dead slow...poor DH couldnt keep up. Nike plus logged it as about 13min /k pace he he (almost walking pace!)

DoubleBluff · 23/08/2007 21:48

I Will get up and do 5 miles in the morning . I will I wll I will.
Now I have said t I have to go. Got my 10k 2 weeks sunday and I am way off my RW schedule.
How are theo other 10kers doing?

sibble · 23/08/2007 22:24

am off to the gym this morning to start week1 of my 10k training. although have been going to the gym regularly I havn't run for a few months so think I will start slowly! Looked at the BUPA site and seems pretty easy going. Are there any other good training sites? When I was training for the duathlon earlier this year I was running 5k's in 28 ish mins really don't think I can keep that pace for 10 k's though without keeling over. Having said that as somebody posted the other day it seems to get easier the longer I am running. First 2 ks' crap and want to stop. Break the 3 k barrier and it gets easier?!?!?

Veggiemummy · 23/08/2007 22:44

that is the same as me, i find when i get to 3km i feel i'm this far into it 7km only left to go. weird. makes me feel like running 10km but working tomorrow, oh could run home from work!?!

DoubleBluff · 24/08/2007 08:56

Didn't go for a arun.
I woke up at 3 thinking i heard someone downstairs and couldn't get back to sleep for ages so when alarm went off was too tired to get up at 6.
Bugger cannot go today now as Dh in work and then am away for the weekend.

mamamoo · 24/08/2007 21:07

Veggiemummy I just joined a nikeplus challenge on RW - can send you link if you want. First one to 80k wins. Fab thing is I'm ranking no 2! max of 20miles a week (no chance!) and beginners.

DH thinks may be good idea for me to run a 10k on Sun in Borders cos he wants to do the fun run with step dd. MMM doing 10k race next Sun...should I ..shouldn't I?

Wallace · 24/08/2007 21:10

Just post asking to join the challenge - I am mamamoo on the challenge too. I don't understand the chat to be honest...much prefer the chat on the mums sites but thought would be good to join a challenge. My previous mileage was automatically added, Imnot sure when the challenge started.

Veggiemummy · 25/08/2007 16:39
