OP posts:
Celery · 18/08/2007 17:33

I haven't been able to run for 10 days now, because I've had tonsillitis, and still not feeling very well really, so not sure when I'm going to be able to. As a beginner who had got the stage of running continuously for 10 minutes, I fear I will have to start again from scratch - very frustrating!

popsycal · 18/08/2007 17:46

no shoes
plus i am ill
possible mastitis accompanied by 'weird-I-have-been-smashed-in0-the-ankles-with-a-0hammer' illness,,,

DoubleBluff · 18/08/2007 17:49

Oh Popsy does not sound good.
Hope you feel better too celery.
Know what you mean Duchess about the school holidays.
Still just try and do what you can better than nothing.
I am off to tuck into a Domino pizza - well it is the weekend!!

Veggiemummy · 18/08/2007 19:13

good on you for just getting out duchess, tomorrow it will be 7 days since i have run.

Pops mmm, mastitis not good, keep feeding and do you get it often, do you need some AB's.

oh toilet training just keeps going sometimes i feel we've almost cracked it then, he wets. i've heard boys take longer. when he is busy playing he gets too usy to go to the potty and does it where he is, usually on his train set, poor Thomas.

popsycal · 18/08/2007 19:34

got some ABs - but been told to stop them to see if bizarre aching is caused by them. Last one lthis morning and hammer ankle is easing so if no better by monday then back to doc for different anti-b
going away for 4 nights on tues too.
WIll take running shoes if they arrive.

I am looking for a 5K in a few months time. Resigned myself to NOT doing the 10K in 3 weeks, though we may still go and watch (free accomodation for us and a nice weekend away after first week back to work). Cant find ANY 5k around here until February - which is at the same time as the 10K I am hoping to do.

If I can get myself back to the standard that I was at before all of this nonsense and am able to run for about 45 mins feeling ok then I may well join the local running club to get me through the winter months......
HOpe everyone is ok

nappyneeds · 18/08/2007 21:16

ooh ooh ooh - I logged on looking for a running thread - have I found one? Trust good old MN to come up trumps. Without readin through this lonnnnnng thread can someone fill me in and can I join

Im wanting to get back into running - ive dabbled before but have become amazingly unfit in the last year or so. Dd is now nearly one year old so I thought I really have no excuse and would have to do runs in the evening but cant decide how to start. I know I could do the run/walk thing but cant decide. I still have my running shoes and even a Nike Triax heart monitor distance watch plus some sports clothes that will do so Im good to go - and actually bursting get started but want to start with a plan rather than willy nilly iyswim.

TIA
Hayley

Hello i'm still around, but just have no time! And my running has fallen by the wayside due to ds1's complete lack of sleep. Its a tantrum every night, and usually about 10pm before he finally drops off, whatever approach I take. So given that ds2 is up at 5 and dh leaves at 5.30/not in till 11.30 (dependig which shift he's on), it doesnt leave alot of running time. I feel like its such a backward step, as I'd just managed to get sorted re making time for me. Help!!!!!!!!

Wallace · 18/08/2007 21:21

poor popsy and celery

Welcome nappy needs! I started just less than four months ago, and have done a 5k, I have a 10k in a couple of weeks and a half marathon (am I mad...?) in October. I have been using the bupa training plans and ran 8 miles today

Good luck!

nappyneeds · 18/08/2007 21:56

wallace - wow youre doing incredibly well for four months. So how long does 8 miles take you? and how often do you run

Thanks for the link

whats AB's????

DoubleBluff · 18/08/2007 22:59

Hi nappyneeds and welcome to the friendliest thread on MN!
The runnersworld website is good too.

nappyneeds · 18/08/2007 23:08

thanks double - i did have a subscription a few years ago but had forgotten about the website

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 18/08/2007 23:56

Hello nappyneeds, welcome to the running thread. As you can see, we have our highs and lows! There is a useful mix of beginners, intermediates and old-hand marathon runners so the advice is good. But the best part for me is that just by posting my progress (or lack of), I keep committed to running. (Except during the holidays when I have too many children at home)!

ABs, in this instance, is anti-biotics.

Wallace · 19/08/2007 05:59

I just subscribed to runners'world.

My 8 miles (plus a tiny bit) took me 89mins. Quite slow but it was uphill. I did 7.5 miles last week in 80 mins. I run 3 times a week.

mustrunmore - my ds2 has been talking to your ds2, he got up at 5am too

Celery · 19/08/2007 08:00

nappyneeds, I'm doing the walk/run thing - kind of following several different plans, kind of making it up as I go along. I had got to running for 10 mins twice with a 5 minute walk in between, but I've not run for nearly 2 weeks now due to tonsillitis, so I think I'm going to start back at running for 3 minutes and see how I feel. I may try today - DH is off for the next two weeks, so I should make the most of the childcare available!

DoubleBluff · 19/08/2007 09:31

Well done Wallace.
I am going out shortly. My RW schedule tells me I need to do 7 miles (easy!) today. Will do my best as fell really tired despite an early night and only one glass of wine last night!
Anyone else running today?

nappyneeds · 19/08/2007 12:31

morning - Im going to decide which beginner plan to follow today and may even brush off my running shoes as well - no time like the present. what does everyone wear when raining? I get quite hot and sweaty not to mention seriously red faced (slightly over weight and VERY unfit) so not sure whether to bother with a jacket.

mamamoo · 19/08/2007 12:56

Welcome nappyneeds! I'm fairly new on here too. I have a 22mo old dd and 11yr old step d. I used to run b4 dd (2 marathons!) but was crippled with SPD when pregnant (crutches) and its is only within last few months that SPD is resolving. I do feel as if starting again tho. Now only focusing on 5 and 10k's as don't get time to get out anymore.

Doublebluff - wonder if we are following same RW schedule? I also have to do 7m easy today but dh out on mountain bike all day and eve grrrrrrr!! so have to delay til tomorrow night.

Wallace am WELL impressed with your progress in just a few months. 8 miles!!!!! Well done!!!!!

Popsy - would be a GOOD move to join a running club. Winter is always a hard time to be motivated so will get you out with like minded people. Def go for it. Sorry things not so good just now.

Veggiemummy - DD is forcing me to try PT now - she is ready despite being only 22mo(is refusing to wear her nappies!!) but I am not. She is dry at home but I have to take the next step now into the outside world (shudders)

Hope eveyone has had a good day - sorry to those I have left off....dd is shouting from upstairs now

mamamoo · 19/08/2007 12:58

ps nappy needs I wear a thin fleece top when raining - I hate my running jacket is bright yellow!

DoubleBluff · 19/08/2007 18:56

Well did my 7 miles in 7o mins so was really pleased.
Checked my schedule, I only needed to do 5 miles!
Never mind. that is the furthest I have run and don't feel too bad, calves are a bit tight. Not sure how I will feel in the morning!

Wallace · 19/08/2007 19:50

Thanks I am really enjoying it too. Am I nuts but does anyone else find it gets easier the longer they run for? eg first 20 mins can be a bit of a slog, but after an hour you feel like you could run forever...?

Well done DB, that's good lol at 7 instead of 5!

I haven't got any proper running clothes yet, but I am going shopping tomorrow! What do I need?

Oh and I have a question about running shoes. I need a new pair, but if I get them tomorrow will they still be too new for my 10k in 2 weeks time? I am planning to get the same shoes as I have at the momnet. My cheap addidas jumiour have done me well

DoubleBluff · 19/08/2007 19:53

Know what you mean Wallce the first mile i always feel like i could die.
Look out for clothes with flat seams and wicking.
I wore a normal vest today and it rubbed all the inside of my arms.
Your teiners should be broken in by the race esp if you know they are a good fit anyway.
Good luck!

Veggiemummy · 20/08/2007 13:12

v. naughty i did nothing over the weekend. my goal of running without having a race to train for is not going well.

going to yoga tonight so at least something. although not my usual class i decided i had better use my gym membership for something so trying a couple of classes.

mammamoo- same here i was def not ready and still dont think i am nearly a week later, DS is using potty and toilet but still 3 times a day at least he just squats where he is and does it there.

mamamoo · 20/08/2007 21:50

7 miles tonight in 70 mins - doublebluff looks like we run at same pace. Pleased as hilly and quicker than last time. I also feel terrible for first few miles and have always been this way - its why pre dd I opted for half mar/mar rather than quicker races (I used to be better at plodding a fair distance....now I can just plod shorter distances!)

Decided to send DD to nursery tomorrow without nappies - eek hasn't been in since Fri and haven't had a chance to discuss it with them yet.

speedymama · 21/08/2007 15:09

My DH ran 3 miles yesterday and pulled his achilles muscle again. This is about the 4th time this has happened and he is really distressed about it because he really wants to run another half marathon.

Is it the case that once your achilles is injured, the injury will keep recurring? I said that he needs to stretch properly before starting his run and then run slowly for the first mile just to warm his muscles up.

Has anybody any experience of this please?

I have not been for a run for a couple of weeks because my achilles muscle has been sore but I'm hoping to go for a gentle 2 mile run on Thursday so hopefully, that will not aggravate it.

Veggiemummy · 21/08/2007 16:26

not sure about achilles stuff but maybe once this current injury has healed he may need to do some stretching several times a day in that area to loosen it up a bit not just before runs. would he consider seeing a physiotherapist about it?

went to yoga class at my gym, was horrendous the yoga instructor was a nightmare compared to the one at my usual yoga place. have decided to give up membership as dont use it much anyway and use the money to go to my other yoga class another day of the week.

DH has rockclimbing tonight but is home from work for a short while before he goes out to the rock climbing center so am going to shoot out the door when he gets in and fit in a quick 5km.....i hope....yes i will i am determined to post a run on this thread today!!!!!
