Week 1 of the 52 small changes challenge - all welcome

OddSocksHighHeels · 27/12/2015 01:42

So the aim is to make one small change a week over a year to keep it manageable based on a book called 52 Small Changes. I'll post each week with the new challenge and people can adapt to however it suits them.

Week 1 starting tomorrow (or today I guess as it's now after midnight) is to drink more water.

The book advises this method for working out how much you should drink: take your body weight in pounds and divide by two, that number is the amount of water you should drink in ounces eg you weigh 150lb so you should drink 75oz water per day. I can't quite follow this so I'm sticking with 1.5 litres a day as an aim.

Feel free to add fruit or veg or whatever if you don't like the taste of water by itself. I currently have a jug that I've added some raspberries and mint to waiting for me to drink tomorrow.

I will check in at the end of each day to update on my progress and keep myself accountable. I hope you all find it helpful too!

Here's to a healthier year Wine

Not got to the water but yet but I'm guessing that's week 1. Will start tomorrow as I'm at a party later and a bit nervous about needing the toilet.

OddSocksHighHeels · 31/12/2015 18:10

I drank my 1.5 litres, threatening myself with no alcohol worked well Grin I'm also about to open the Bailey's.

Thank you quirky that's really good. I'll add that post to next weeks thread as well.

Thanks OP. I'm late to the party, but love the idea.
Yes please, a new thread each week would be perfect.

Am well short of my water target but tracking it is the first step to increasing my intake.

MintyChops · 31/12/2015 18:39

Got my 2l in, now on the red wine. Happy new year everyone......

AtSea1979 · 31/12/2015 18:47

How much is an ounce of water?

DrDiva · 31/12/2015 18:58

1oz is 30 ml. (Seared On my brain from having a prem on a tube feed!)

Nearly there with liquid today...

OddSocksHighHeels · 31/12/2015 18:58

I don't know but I believe a standard glass is 8oz. So about 200ml? 250ml?

Happy New Year Wine

Oh yeah. Why didn't I remember it from making up bottles?

quirkychick · 31/12/2015 20:43

Someone will have to have my quota of wine as I'm on antibiotics for a chest infection... it means I've only been having one small coffee each day and lots of green tea with mint... I'm on the sofa with a camomile tea, not the same!

KanyesVest · 31/12/2015 20:57

Hmmm...is there any way I can include 2 cups of tea, half a bottle of ted and 3 glasses of bubbly in my quota?? I have my 1.5l jug and a pint glass in front of me though, ever the optimist...

Happy new year everyone!

DrDiva · 31/12/2015 21:26

Happy New Year! Here's to our new, healthier selves. Wine (that's sugarless coloured water, honest)

And here is to quirkychick's speedy recovery and resuming if wine consumption.

FiveShelties · 31/12/2015 21:38

Eight glassed for me - now onto the red wine.

All the best for a Happy and Healthy New Year Wine

GeordieJeannie · 31/12/2015 21:40

Bugger only 500mls today before hitting a the wine

Happy New Year everyone.

Sirona · 31/12/2015 22:58

Target hit.. Might go wild an have an alcohol free beer now. Have a Happy New Year everyone.

KanyesVest · 31/12/2015 23:08

Weyhey, I got my jug finished!

OddSocksHighHeels · 31/12/2015 23:15

Impressive determination at getting it done sirona and kanyes have you two not been at the booze today then?

OP posts:
KanyesVest · 31/12/2015 23:34

I have been at the booze, Odd, had a good half bottle of wine and some bubbles this afternoon! Hoping the water will stave off a hangover that's already starting....
and I've a glass of wine on the go alongside my current glass of water. I really hope I don't sleep through a major need to pee Confused

Sirona · 31/12/2015 23:36

Nope, no booze for me OddSocks. Never really drink New Years, always stuck in with the dc every year as they're too young to be out so late (and ex always works it so no mission of him taking them). Youngest already sparked out an hour ago after wanting to sit up. Kinda like waking up to a new year feeling fresh and motivated anyway.

Hope you feel better soon quirkychick

quirkychick · 01/01/2016 08:40

Thanks, everyone! The ABs are kicking in now, but I have had a rubbish night's sleep with a combination of fireworks, cold night and people shouting outside waking the youngest at 3am - and she has only just gone back to sleep Shock. I might need a nap this afternoon. I have drunk lots of water already today though.

BugritAndTidyup · 01/01/2016 08:49

Happy New Year, everyone. Just a heads up that Aldi are selling 700ml fruit infuser bottles from Sunday 3rd January - £3.99 a pop.

Water is going well. When is everyone starting the next change?

abetterhairbrushisneeded · 01/01/2016 08:51

I'd like to join but am, like so many, late to the thread!

Is the next new small step arriving on the 4th oddsocks?

I've skim read the thread. I see lots of talk about sleep and alcohol but I presume there's no small step about this yet?! It just so happens that I had my first ever alcohol free NYE since I turned 18... but that was because I over indulged the night before so no stars for me yet.

Right. Off to work out how much water I need to be drinking. And I also need to find some more ethical alternatives. I find it really easy to drink from bottled water at work and probably have enough. But it's a waste of plastic (I do resuse the bottles for weeks) and I don't keep up on non-work days. Wish me luck!

RattieOfCatan · 01/01/2016 08:55

Happy new year!

I managed my amount yesterday, plus nice coffee and nice wine!

Allgunsblazing · 01/01/2016 09:01

Happy new year!
I was the designated driver last night, but they wouldn't let me drink water, it had to be coke! I did do pretty well with water at work though.
I already had a glass with my painkillers, waiting for them to kick in then I'm off for a run, a pint of water when I get back.

For those who think they're late on the thread, a word of , ahem, advice: the only time I kept a resolution was when I started at a totally random time. Just jump in, nobody is going to turn around in week 52 and tell you you haven't completed it because you missed 3 days of the challenge. Be kind to yourselves.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2016 09:28

Morning!

AtSea1979 · 01/01/2016 09:38

Happy New Year everyone.
Do we know how many mls per stone?
