2.is there any way of adding the apostrophe key onto the qwerty screen instead of having it in the .?123 screen. Blardy annoying having to dip in and out of screens to put a apostrophe in. Can I exchange it for one of the shift arrows? I only need one.

  1. How do I scroll up and down in the mn message box. Can't work out how to move to the bottom or top of the text after I have previewed it.
  1. Will I ever be able to stop playing Angry Birds?

Sorry Rusty, you didn't want to do anything else this evening did you?!

It worked on email pic Grin

Still no menu on fb pic, even when in album Sad

OgreTripletsAreSoCute · 10/01/2011 21:40

Love this thread, ipad is brilliant but infuriating at the same time. I can't seem to manage the scrolling inside the message posting box though.

RustyBear · 10/01/2011 21:48

Sorry, DaftApeth, I'm afraid it's just one of this 'well, it worked for me' moments. The only thing I can think of at the moment is that there's something in the facebook settings for the photo you're trying to save, but I don't often put photos on facebook, so I've never investigated that.

Slubber - this link has a very comprehensive explanation of how syncing photos works - it's worth ploughing through! The big thing to remember is that syncing photos normally works only one way, from the computer to the iPad, so that if you sync a folder of photos and then delete one from that folder on the computer, then next time you sync it will delete that photo from the iPad too. And the guy who wrote that post does sync from an external drive - you just have to tell iTunes where to look by using the drop down menu.

RustyBear · 10/01/2011 22:12

Ogretriplets- the scroll thing only moves you around text that is already there, you can't use it, for example, to put a big space in a post...

like this. You would have to do that by using the return key several times - but once you have done that, you can use the magnifying bubble to move down to the end of that space, (even if you haven't yet put any text after the space) To put a space before your text you can move the bubble to the beginning of the text box & use the return key.

RustyBear · 10/01/2011 22:24

Another thought DaftApeth - are you looking at Facebook with the iPhone/iPad app, I haven't tried it using the app, I just use the normal site via safari.

DaftApeth · 10/01/2011 22:25

Yes I am using the app.

Will try on Safari tomorrow. Good idea Grin

MmeLindt · 10/01/2011 22:48

Facebook - try the Friendly app. When you tap a photo, you get it pretty much full screen. From there you can download it to iPad. The app is really good.

Otherwise, easiest way to transfer data - photos or anything else - is to download Dropbox app for iPad (and iPhone if you have one) and for the PC.

Then you drag and drop the whole folder on your PC to the Dropbox folder.

Open Dropbox for iPad and save photos to iPad. You don't have to download them to the iPad, but if you don't then you have to have an internet connection to view them - they are stored online.

Plus you have your photos saved somewhere safe, if your PC blows up, gets stolen...

SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 07:42

I use Dropbox too. It's great for quickly moving stuff between my iphone and ipad and also the PC - DS1 uses it to transfer homework to the main PC so he can print them (although hopefully the Airport will sort out wireless printing when Iget my arse in gear and st it up.)

The Photobucket app is good too if you want to upload photos from phone or pad (not that the ipad has a camera yet :) However, I've used it to post screenshots.

DaftApeth · 11/01/2011 08:44

Yay! It worked by using fb on safari. Thanks Rusty.

Will look into Dropbox. Sounds handy. I often worry about all the pics stored on our laptops and what will happen to them if it gets stolen, crashes, fire, etc.

This thread has been great. Some things I knew but many ideas have been so helpful. Well done op!

Now what else do I need to know........?

MmeLindt · 11/01/2011 08:47

DaftApeth
Do you have an external memory thingy? I have all my photos saved on there, saves space on the laptop and no worries about crashing.

The dropbox is extra security in case something happens to the external memory. Am thinking about getting a second one as back up as I don't put all my photos on dropbox. Is that really paranoid?

geordieminx · 11/01/2011 08:58

Oooh I love an iPad thread. I've had mine for 6 months, but much as I love it I feel there is probably loads of stuff that I haven't discovered yet.

Can anyone recommend some more apps? I have quite a few games...cut the rope, angry birds etc.... Mainly stuff to occupy the 3 year old, but I would like some grown up apps. Not necessarily work type things but interesting things? Useful perhaps?

SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 09:10

For sheer ponciness, I like taking notes using an iPad stylus and the Penultimate app.

All the SmallDragons like LineArt which is really wierd but strangely compelling. Kind of like those globes with the lightening inside them.

DD (4) likes some of the phonic apps - iplay&Sing, I Write Words Lite... I didn't get any expensive ones but they kept her amused.

GobbleGator is like Hungry HIppos and great fun.

If you have DVDs you can rip them via software on your PC and convert them into the right format to watch on the iPad - that has kept DD amused and me sane on more occasions than I care o mention.

PinballHD is good.

For Property Porn, the Right Move app is superb. I have wasted many an hour browsing properties for sale :o

DaftApeth · 11/01/2011 09:11

No I don't have an external hard drive. Should probably look into one of those too!

I don't really use many useful apps. Most of the apps are ones that ds had on his iPod touch, so a football games - yawn.

I really like 'add to home screen' button and have direct links now to BBC news site, MN and a couple of other websites I use regularly.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 09:13

Blogshelf is nice for reading blogs, Geocolor Pad is like the Altair design books I had when I was in school, Type Drawing is fascinating although I haven't found a use for it yet. Pictureka HD is good fun.

MmeLindt · 11/01/2011 09:19

I have:

Washington Post - still on free trial, probably won't sign up for the subscription

Times Online - mainly for the Sunday Times which is incredibly expensive here

TED - for interesting speeches about everything

Right Move - for property porn

Scrabble

Guardian Eyewitness and Time - for stunning photos

Weather HD - not as much info as Weather Pro but very pretty

Kindle - synchs automatically with my Kindle and with Kindle for iPhone

Epicurious for recipes

Solar Walk which the DC love - shows the solar system. Very cool.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 09:22

Yes, I have lots of direct links to websites. Very useful.

geordieminx · 11/01/2011 09:45

Oooh a question for the experts... is there a way to transfer the apps that I have on the ipad onto my new iphone? Or do I have to buy them again? Confused

I heart scrabble, have been playing that lots.

Have also been using the tesco app on iphone to scan things... I dont actually do anything once I have scanned them... its just fun Blush

DaftApeth · 11/01/2011 10:06

I'm sure an expert will give you a definitive answer in a minute.

I wondered the same about all the apps I had bought for ds on his iPod touch when I got my iPad before Xmas.

In fact, when I connected the iPad to iTunes and used my iTunes password, it just automatically downloaded all the apps that were also iPad versions.

Any app I buy on one, is not charged a second time when I download I on the other.

Have a go downloading one on your phone that you already have. It has to be compatible with whatever you are downloading it not, obviously and you need to use the same iTunes account.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 12:24

Provided an App is bought with the same Apple ID (account) you can put them on other iThings. Either they get put on when you Synch or I'm sure if you buy them again, it tells you that you've already purchased the item and asks if you want to download it again.

RustyBear · 11/01/2011 13:14

Yes it does - I just tried it with Drop7, which is an iPhone app but which I originally bought on the iPad. It asks for your password and starts loading and then a box comes up telling you you've already bought it and can download it again for free.

MmeLindt · 11/01/2011 14:01

Soupdragon
Have downloaded Blogshelf, it is great. Thanks.

Slubberdegullion · 11/01/2011 16:52

Goblegator now in use here Grin and dh has solved the issue of getting photos from the external hard drive into the iPad.

MmdLindt how good is epicurious? I already have a LOT of recipe books. What do you use it for?

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 11/01/2011 17:18

I browse for inspiration on epicurious.

Not bad for American recipes, or if I have a particular piece of meat and don't know what to do with it. You can put in main ingredient, which course, which kind of cuisine, dietery consideration etc.

Sometimes the recipes are a bit strange, in a "Fry ground beef, add a jar of Barilla sauce" kind of thing.

I have screen shot on my blog (link on profile). You lot inspired me to do a blog post on favourite apps.

Slubberdegullion · 11/01/2011 17:26

So is it very American, all cups of things, lbs & oz and fahrenheit? I'm pressing on with my new Julia Child cookbook but do find all the converting a bit tiresome.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 18:04

MmeLindt, how do you format the pictures on your blog? Mine are too large for the page and I can't get them to sit nicey within the boundaries of the page.
