@Alsoplayspiccolo I'd go for it if you can!

Benjispruce4 · 18/08/2022 12:13

How about you?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 18/08/2022 12:10

When you say “ marks” do you mean UMS?
DD is a tiny bit disappointed with a B in English lit, as it is her degree subject.
Looks like she is 4 UMS off the A, so I’m wondering whether a review is worth it - she would have to go down a lot of marks to drop to a C, and English is such a subjective subject.

Do it!!

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2022 12:14

Yay to zanda. That's such brilliant news.

Volterra · 18/08/2022 12:18

So delighted to see results from @Zebracat and @ZandathePanda

On the motorway and hopefully finally home in 30 mins

Think DS has come to terms with going to his insurance. He was never devastated with it, think it was just he had his heart set on Cardiff. He couldn’t get through to them on the phone, was a slim chance anyway as obviously they have already reviewed his grades and rejected him.
Yes we had the same grade requirement and results as you.

Fiddlersgreen · 18/08/2022 12:19

Congrats @ZandathePanda another one with great news!!

In theory "re-marks" are now reviews of marking (since around 2016), so if one examiner just has a difference of opinion from another, the original mark stands. However, DS's GCSE English Literature was WJEC and went from a 6 to a 9 on review in 2017, so maybe WJEC apply the rules differently, or it could be that English Lit is different.

As advised to previous posters, as it is not urgent, I would advise you to get the papers back, ask a friendly English teacher to review the marking, and request a review of marking for the papers most likely to go up. I heard of someone who needed about 3 points, put all papers in for a review and 1 paper went up 4, but another went down 2!

We don't have UMS in England any more, that is not a thing for Linear A levels. Wales still has UMS so that you can combine AS and A level marks.

It’s AQA, I’ve emailed the school. It’s more because it’s a bit of a surprise. Had she got a B in Psychology we probably wouldn’t have bothered.

@Wheresthebeach i meant to tag you earlier too. Is a re-mark a possibility? Sorry dd is so disappointed

So you can get the scripts back free and ask teachers to look at them.

Wheresthebeach · 18/08/2022 12:30

@crazycrofter we are asking for an admin check and scripts rather than remark at this point. Whole thing seems odd but maybe she just messed up. School is surprised too. It’s two subjects we’re shocked by. All feeling quite sick at the moment. She’s worked so hard for so long.

ThomasinaGallico · 18/08/2022 12:33

I am happy today. DS got Distinction in Engineering CTEC, A in Computer Sci and B in Maths, so a nice solid set of results after a very very weird two years. He’s following in DH’s footsteps and going to Essex to do Computer Science.

To those who missed their offers, I’d like to say two years ago it was another story. DD was one of many caught up in the utter shitshow that was A level results that year - they had abruptly stopped their studies that March when lockdown hit, so she and her classmates missed out on consolidation, revision, exams and exam technique, and she certainly wasn’t the finished article. The cobbled-together grading landed her with a disappointing three C’s and she didn’t get either of her offers. But she was going to take a year out anyway. So she did the Geography paper (still got the same grade), spent a year working and got a place at Aberystwyth. Very underrated place. Won’t suit bright-lights big city types, but DD loves it. Ironically Cardiff (her original choice) offered her a place as well, but she turned it down. There are always options.

Cranmer · 18/08/2022 12:41

Neighbour's DS was given a 5 in GCSE maths 2 years ago (algorithm year) and despite getting 7,8 and 9s in all his other subjects (inc 9 in physics) his comprehensive would not let him take A level maths. He wanted to do engineering so needed maths and physics A level.

He had to swap schools to a school who would let him do A level maths. He received his A levels today and got A star, AA. What was the A star in? Maths!! He is off to Bristol to do engineering!!

Delphigirl and Monkey2001

She’s not anxious about being away from home - quite the opposite in fact 😁, and she has looked at the foundation year and it’s general for the first two terms, and as she got A in EPQ she feels it’s not particularly something she ‘needs’ to do, and is worried she might get demotivated by it. Last green is music based though. Interesting that there may be a possibility of being bumped up to the course. She’s been offered a place at Cardiff now though so she’s having a think.

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 18/08/2022 10:55

Hmmmm, me too now re grade boundaries. Was it Edexel? Dd just found out her (small) music class, where no one was predicted lower than B and most of them were predicted A, have not a single one of them got higher C. One of them predicted A got a D. Only one of them got their place and that’s because she applied to a conservatoire and had her place confirmed a while ago via her audition.

Yes edexcel. I've seen the marks ...composition downgraded two marks , appraisal exam was completely off the mark, not sure what happened there.

I think Dd is going to accept Cardiff (fingers crossed as I selfishly want this over with)

Her lovely singing teacher texted her to say she got a C in A Level Music but thrived at Cardiff...came out with a 1st. Thar was really helpful for her to hear as she is feeling a bit downtrodden about her mark.

@Monkey2001 my DD was 1 mark off an A in two subjects so she thinks she has failed even though she got into the uni she wants. What do you mean by the scripts ? Is it worth a remark ? Or should we just let it be as she got into where she wants ?

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 18/08/2022 12:52

Alsoplayspiccolo · 18/08/2022 11:19

Yes, Monkey, it was the friend of a friend, and she somehow worked a miracle in 5 weeks!

Thanks, Delphi, and ditto back!

I can’t keep up with all the news, but commiserations for all DCs struggling to deal with disappointment today. So, so hard after the toughest 2 years; I hope they can find some hope in other avenues very quickly.

cinnamon, if your DD does come to Cardiff, I would be very happy to be an emergency contact or even just someone to call if she’s having a wobble when she’s here.
I did the same for a friend of my DNiece, and it was lovely for all of us - we’re still in touch a decade later.

Thank you Piccolo that's so lovely 😍

My dd is in limbo, not been accepted or rejected. The uni are reviewing her grades and calling her by the end of the day! So flat and fed up

Oh that’s lovely! I have to say Cardiff we’re so lovely and encouraging on the phone to DD that it’s really made her feel better too. She’s still deciding though…..

So same as us then, RH still not updated UCAS even though they’ve said it will be offered with foundation. What Uni is yours?

Fiddlersgreen · 18/08/2022 13:02

Gosh @cheninblanc that must be so stressful and you can’t even look at clearing until you know! I can’t believe they can leave people hanging on like this. Keeping my fingers crossed for you

Oh it's a horrid flat feeling isn't it ? I'm sorry @cheninblanc I think most that are in the 'review' category do end up with a place .

icanbewhatiwant · 18/08/2022 13:03

Ok so as I'm not home...do they need to do anything next? Ds has firm. No email from Sussex saying anything. UCAS says the next step is to get a student bank account. Ds back at work he says nothing at all on email, only the ucas one in his junk box. I'm sure ds1 had to accept his place at UEA when it was his turn. They also sent an early congrats email and text. Nothing from Sussex yet.

Glad to hear most of the dc's have what they wanted. For the others fingers crossed they get something in clearing.
