Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Well done all for results today. Why is the summer going so fast?

MirandaWest · 11/08/2022 12:41

I need to check which board each of DS's subjects are as each one is with a different board...

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 11/08/2022 12:50

@MirandaWest I must have known to look up those stats but can t remember what board Sociology was !

I looked at the stats for Dd and came up with the following...but not sure how accurate as this is a cumulative calculation based on what percentage were awarded B and above. A possible blunt tool ! I just keep telling Dd she has to be around top 50% of cohort to get those three Bs, which was well within her ability!

Cumulative percentage Grade B and above

English 2021= 68.1, 2019=52.7 this year 59% ?
Sociology 2021 = 59.2, 2019 = 48.3 this year 54% ?
Music 2021= 71.3, 2019 = 46.0 this year 58.5% ?

Maths was NEVER my strong point

Actually this probably won't be accurate at all as I've just looked at the document I got the 2019 stats from and it didn't specify the boards !

Sorry @MirandaWest and @Benjispruce4 !

I'd forgetten about DS's EPQ. Am presuming he'll get results for that next week too.

MirandaWest · 11/08/2022 13:10

I've found the individual percentages for different boards - some subjects really did have a vast amount of A* in 2021 compared with 2019.

Suppose I should do some actual work now for a bit 😁

Dd2 just messaged me in the middle of the night from Canada to say she got an A for As Geography. I presume it's an international one. She's doing Geo without doing the GCSE first, so she's very pleased. Those of you that may remember she's repeating the year after much upset last year & dropped Bio ( as school insist on A's). It's been very much the right decision as she's had a fab. year & regained all her old confidence. Plus she's learnt to self-manage her ADHD after a surprise diagnosis.

So pleased to hear that @cantonet - you must be so relieved and delighted. Go DD!

Delphigirl · 11/08/2022 13:27

Congrats to @honeymonster’s perfect medical dd and also to @Tomnooktoldmeto - great results. @Benjispruce4 I’m afraid I did laugh at your DD’s range of A-D self-predictions… DS is famously shit at assessing how he has done in exams so that appealed to me…!

just got a text from him saying “I am once again at work…”. It is Day 2 of his working life 🤣🤣🤣

Isthisjustnormal · 11/08/2022 13:35

Congrats to @HoneyMobster ; @Tomnooktoldmeto and @Cantonet juniors for those fab results (& 0apols if I missed anyone!)
@MirandaWest : good point on EPQ- had totally forgotten that!! Does that come out at same time?! I’m sure I knew once upon a time!

Shimy · 11/08/2022 13:42

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee Thank you for the new thread, which has moved at the tremendous speed of 4 pages in already!

Well done her@Cantonet and a fab result for anyone let alone one who didn't do Geography GCSE, just how did she manage that?

DS currently away on a lads holiday in Milan, having a blast Smile. Yesterday they left Milan and should be in Rime by now. So far they've been to a museum, the beach, and have a packed itinerary of other historical places to visit.

Decorhate · 11/08/2022 14:19

@Benjispruce4 Yes very good though less than they said they wanted! He probably should have dropped the one he got a C in but at the end of Y12 it was his best subject.

crazycrofter · 11/08/2022 14:28

Well done to all the successful kids so far @HoneyMobster @Cantonet @Tomnooktoldmeto . A great start for this thread!!

ealingwestmum · 11/08/2022 14:54

Haha, love the dramatic text Delphi 😂

sofakingcool · 11/08/2022 17:54

Can someone bring me up to date please, how are some already knowing their grades?

Monkey2001 · 11/08/2022 18:02

@sofakingcool Pre-U/Cambridge International results came out yesterday, IB in early July, Scottish results on Tuesday.

Cantonet · 11/08/2022 18:33

"Well done her@Cantonet and a fab result for anyone let alone one who didn't do Geography GCSE, just how did she manage that?"
Hard work & something to prove I guess 🙂
I'm glad she's on top of things, as I did't even know she was doing an international As level. I wish Ds was equally organised. As apparently he's sleeping his way through the Canadian trip and driving DD bonkers, as she's full of get up & go.
@Volterra it will be very useful for you to have the possibility of two together at Cardiff Uni. Has your DD only just been diagnosed?
Congratulations on the other results with an amazing English score - 92% Wow.

Shimy · 11/08/2022 19:48

@Cantonet Sorry, I'm not implying she didn't work hard, obviously, she did Smile DS also studied for Core Maths on his own as they didn't offer it at his school. He too was driven by the need to prove he could 'do' Maths. I think we're very lucky to have very hard working dc. DS1 would've pulled his teeth out one by one before he studied for anything outside his subjects that he did do at GCSE let alone something new.

crazycrofter · 11/08/2022 20:16

I’m impressed by your motivated kids! Ds has finally been coerced into doing his A Level transition work. He’s sitting in the kitchen.. every few minutes he gets up to look in the fridge/go on his phone/go to the loo! He’s so distractible! To be fair, I’m not dissimilar!

EwwSprouts · 11/08/2022 21:41

Well done on the results so far.

My back of a fag packet calculation is that for A's in science you need to be in the top 25% of the cohort. Open to being corrected...so long as it's favourable.

@Delphigirl Liking his humour!

NCTDN · 11/08/2022 22:03

Surely all subjects would need to be in the top 25% for an A?

EwwSprouts · 11/08/2022 22:19

Not in Covid times.
www.tes.com/magazine/archived/levels-2021-results-glance#:~:text=In%20Biology%2C%2044.1%20per%20cent,36.8%20per%20cent%20in%202020.
2021 More than two-fifths of A-level grades are A or A*
In Biology, 44.1 per cent of entries gained an A or A*, compared with 36.8 per cent in 2020.

Chewbecca · 11/08/2022 22:21

NCTDN Not in all subjects, especially sciences. AQA Biology in this example 149/260 is an A = 57%.

(if I am understanding it correctly!)

Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?
Chewbecca · 11/08/2022 22:22

Ok, I misunderstood your point even! % of the cohort, not % of marks.

EwwSprouts · 11/08/2022 22:26

@Chewbecca It's late & we're all nail biting.

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 22:52

DD got emails from her firm today and thinks it’s a sign.😂
