Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@Decorhate what did he get? Bath ask for high grades I notice.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 11/08/2022 08:26

DD’s results are in with actual marks English Literature 69% C, English Language 92% A so just next weeks result now which was predicted A to come.

DD’s very happy as her offer is 120 to do creative writing and media

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 08:31

@Tomnooktoldmeto thats fantastic! Very well done to her and what a relief for you all. Good luck with last grade but sounds promising. 69% is only a C? Would have thought that was B territory.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 11/08/2022 08:37

Amazing achievement @Tomnooktoldmeto Congrats to Dd!

@Cantonet that is really really great, a huge well done to her ! My DD was diagnosed last year and is now repeating her final year, at Cardiff so I ‘m sure he’ll be happy if he goes.

@HoneyMobster , huge congratulations to DD! Have a great time in Germany. I have relatives there and am missing visiting hugely at this point not having been since 2019.

@Decorhate that is encouraging, thanks. He submitted an extenuating circumstances form recently and applied for MMath so hoping if he misses a grade then they might offer the BS.c.

@Tomnooktoldmeto excellent news, well done to her!

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 09:07

Well don’t to @HoneyMobster DD too. What a great result!

cariadambyth · 11/08/2022 09:13

Thanks, as ever, for the new thread. Huge congratulations @Tomnooktoldmeto , we’re off to a good start, let’s hope there are many more successes to come! DD’s stress levels are ramping up nicely and as a result mine are too. I’m better at hiding them however. Funny/terrifying to think we’ll have the results by now this time next week. Dh has booked the day off so we’ll both be around for her.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 11/08/2022 09:15

@Benjispruce4 I thought that too but DD doesn’t want us to ask for a re-mark

I will just be glad when next Thursday is here as DS is also waiting for results as well as DD’s final result. At least today has gone well

Congratulations to others with good news and fingers crossed for next week everyone

craggyrat · 11/08/2022 09:21

Gosh can't keep up! Well done everyone on today's results

Monkey2001 · 11/08/2022 09:31

Well done @Tomnooktoldmeto DD! I just looked up the Cambridge International grade boundaries and they are super complicated - each element needs to be over a certain mark to access the higher grades, so you could get 80% in most papers but crash in one element and get a B/C. They should like good results but the main thing is that she is happy and has what she needs for the next stage of her journey.

ealingwestmum · 11/08/2022 09:32

Can’t keep up either, but hello to all the new joiners and returners…HoneyMobster, no surprises there, very well done to her and hope she is enjoying working in Germany!

Monkey2001 · 11/08/2022 09:33

Lovely positive story and good news from your DD @Cantonet !

Zebracat · 11/08/2022 09:44

@Tomnooktoldmeto and @Cantonet really lovely results, especially after adversity. Altho 69% for a C does seem really harsh. I’m so old that 70% is always an A, so that is 1 mark off an A! And 92% is practically perfect, so definitely an A*.

Comefromaway · 11/08/2022 10:26

Well done those who got international result today

sazzy5 · 11/08/2022 10:51

Well done to those with international results, the grades look tough with the % obtained. I have booked a few hours off work next Thursday so I can help with clearing, currently there’s nothing in there that DS is thrilled about. I don’t like the search function at all, I think the website will be crashing a lot on Thursday.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/08/2022 11:05

Checking in...

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 11:16

Are those percentages at all related to A Level grade boundaries. 😳

Comefromaway · 11/08/2022 11:17

No, each exam board will have totally different grade boundaries.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/08/2022 11:17

Congratulations to those with grades in hand! Eng Lit grade boundaries are very high. DS's exam board back in 2019 a C was 67% and B was 78%, I reckon there's probably a 5% shift so maybe 73% for a B this year? Can you tell I have been obsessively looking at stats for his exam boards??? I am so nervous.

I did manage to get him to look at some possible alternative unis which are already showing in clearing (how does that work?) and also a possible alternative course at Notts as he's still desperate to go there. I hope none of these are needed. 😕

Anyone else barely seen their child this summer? DS is out ALL the time, either working or socialising, I reckon I've seen him for a total of four hours in the past 3 weeks. Not even joking. 😔

Comefromaway · 11/08/2022 11:18

A film of last year's results das at ds's college has just flashed up on Facebook and by the look of it there are several parents present.

Decorhate · 11/08/2022 11:30

@Benjispruce4 He got AABC

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 11:54

Those are great grades especially with 4 A levels! @Decorhate

Comefromaway · 11/08/2022 11:59

The first half of the summer I saw too much of not only him but his mates as I have been acting as roadie for their gigs, plus taking him to NYMT residentials/concerts/shows. 5 18/19 year lads took up residence in my Dad's garage for a week of band rehearsals and they all stayed over nights too for 5 days!

But last week and this week he has been away on a residential/performing.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 11/08/2022 12:02

I looked at the stats for Dd and came up with the following...but not sure how accurate as this is a cumulative calculation based on what percentage were awarded B and above. A possible blunt tool ! I just keep telling Dd she has to be around top 50% of cohort to get those three Bs, which was well within her ability!

Cumulative percentage Grade B and above

English 2021= 68.1, 2019=52.7 this year 59% ?
Sociology 2021 = 59.2, 2019 = 48.3 this year 54% ?
Music 2021= 71.3, 2019 = 46.0 this year 58.5% ?

Maths was NEVER my strong point
