...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Just looked at clearing and there’s a few courses DD might be interested in, but nothing for English and film.

Will more courses be added once the unis get the A level results?

Volterra · 05/07/2022 11:15

Thanks @Heifer . DS firm amd insurance both in clearing.

Zebracat · 05/07/2022 12:35

Looked at Clearing. Feel better now. Lots of things that look interesting and worthwhile.

Monkey2001 · 05/07/2022 12:40

Hope nerves are calm in @Horace123 household. Fingers crossed for good news tomorrow!

SandyBayley has a new name over on the medicine thread but I told her this thread would like to know how her DD gets on as we started this journey together, so she may pop in.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 05/07/2022 13:18

Is it IB results today, or tomorrow?

icanbewhatiwant · 05/07/2022 13:19

Ds started his full time summer job yesterday. He has to be there for 8am. He's leaving at 7.40am but as he settles in and gets used to the drive there, that leaving time will change to 7.50am. I know what he's like at leaving it later and later. I asked Ds whether he minds working 5 days a week when a lot of his mates have a free summer, but he wants the pay packet, so doesn't mind working. One of his best friends also has a job there too. He will be working in a lab testing the crop samples as they come in. Ds1 worked there the 3 previous years for the summer. But the lab work tends to be all girls. So it's great that ds2 has a male friend there. Ds1 took on a job working outside for his third summer, directing lorries onto the weigh bridge and into the corn store. Then using the machinery to suck the crop out the lorries. Ds1 much preferred that job. He was paid £1 hour more. But the lab job will look better on his cv as he has just finished his biology degree. But it also made him realise he doesn't want an indoor job or to work in a lab. I think ds2 will prefer to be indoors.

@Alsoplayspiccolo According to IBO, it's tomorrow, 6th of July.

Decorhate · 05/07/2022 14:40

Ds’ insurance is in clearing. Though I think he has his heart set on Leeds which is not!

Horace123 · 05/07/2022 15:37

@Monkey2001 thank you for remembering us! IB results get released mid afternoon tomorrow but I think (hope!) UCAS updates in the morning.

Feeling very nervous about results - of course in the long run it will be fine if tomorrow doesn’t go well but it will be a disappointment. And if he misses Oxford offer he’ll probably also miss Durham. At least there is a lot of sport on to take my mind off it - have taken a few days off work so been watching the cricket and tennis. DD’s prom last night. And ….. breaking news …. DS passed his driving test this morning!

Monkey2001 · 05/07/2022 15:53

Ah @Horace123 passing the driving test is a great distraction from the results nerves, now you have the distraction of finding insurance which is not utterly ridiculous! Well done him and looking forward to more good news tomorrow.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/07/2022 15:59

Congrats to your DS on his driving test @Horace123 !

Oblomov22 · 05/07/2022 16:02

Well done Horace! 🚗

Heifer · 05/07/2022 16:37

congrats @Horace123 on DS driving test - well done him.

Can you confirm my understanding of clearing. DDs firm & insurance courses are in clearing, so does that mean it's more likely that should she miss a grade she may be accepted?

ealingwestmum · 05/07/2022 16:44

Nice one Horace! 🚘

HoneyMobster · 05/07/2022 16:58

@Monkey2001 - I see I have been summoned! Yes DD is also waiting for IB results tomorrow, fingers crossed she makes her Oxford Medicine offer. If not it will be Leeds. Prom tonight to take her mind off it.

Benjispruce4 · 05/07/2022 17:02

Congrats on driving test pass especially in this long waiting list climate. DD waited so long, failed first time within 5 minutes and due to Covid had to drive straight back to test centre. Second time round(3 months later and after several test app purchases) she passed with zero minors. Big relief!
Interested in clearing question too. Where do I look?

Piggywaspushed · 05/07/2022 17:07

DS's firm isn't in clearing but his insurance is so this is probably a Good Thing. He'll be pleased Birmingham isn't in Clearing because he likes the idea of a competitive entry course.

Seeline · 05/07/2022 17:32

Both DDs choices are in clearing - hoping that's a good thing?

Benjispruce4 · 05/07/2022 17:33

Can somebody tell me how to check the clearing thing? Any links?

Heifer · 05/07/2022 17:38

Heifer · 05/07/2022 10:01

For anyone interested - UCAS Clearing is now open.

www.ucas.com/advisers/managing-applications/supporting-you-through-confirmation-and-clearing/confirmation-and-clearing-2022-key-dates

Look on 5th July and click on Search Tool.

@Benjispruce4 - link is in there.

Benjispruce4 · 05/07/2022 17:40

Oh thanks @Heifer i missed that.😀

Benjispruce4 · 05/07/2022 17:44

Can’t see DD’s course. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

Heifer · 05/07/2022 17:59

no problem @Benjispruce4 . TBH I'm not sure what it really means for our DD/DS. I can see it's great if they don't make the grades and need to look for another course as I can see lots of options for DD, but not sure what it means for their actual course if it's in clearing or not.

NCTDN · 05/07/2022 18:36

I'm really surprised that DD insurance is in clearing. Hopefully that means that even if she doesn't get the exact grades, there's still a chance of a place?

ProggyMat · 05/07/2022 18:43

Well done to your DS @Horace123 !
I’m keeping everything that can be firmly crossed that today’s news is a good omen for tomorrow! 🍀
@HoneyMobster sending positive vibes for your DD! 🍀
Thanks for the clearing link @Heifer - none of DDs 5 UCAS choices are showing as being in clearing at this point, for those without offers ( is it also for those that also want to go through ‘extra’? ) but as you say I don’t know what can ‘be read’ from this until results day?
