...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@Shimy my understanding is that there is adjustment - but it's now mixed in with clearing and will be that way in the future - although I have also read it won't be easy to move up as not as many places available this year.

Shimy · 06/07/2022 10:15

@Seeline That is very true. UEA and most of those I listed are very generous with grades, more so, if you put them as your firm so that's something to keep your mind at peace. I was strongly encouraged for ds1 to apply to Cardiff by the dept for this very reason. I am surprised though that they said they're going to be 'more' flexible this year than previous, I'd have thought it would be the other way round.

Shimy · 06/07/2022 10:21

@Heifer Thanks for pointing that out. So, the adjustment process has been abolished and replaced with everything going through Clearing.
That's a shame in the old process, applicants going through adjustment could hold on to their current offers until they got a new offer before releasing it, whilst for Clearing you have to release all offers first. Now, whether trading up or down they have to release all offers. That's a bit rubbish for them.

Sorry if I am repeating myself (I often am!) but when we went to the Newcastle open day back in 2018 I spoke to the Biomed admissions tutor and he said that when applications came in they gave an offer of AAB to every applicant predicted at least CCC who met subject requirements and rejected the rest, without reading any PSs. On Results Day they accept anyone who has firm/insurance offer with ABB and look at the PS for anyone with BBB or slightly lower. They then try to fill any remaining places from Clearing, I think they are still happy with ABB at that stage.

I think the reason universities quote high grades is because they want to be perceived as more selective than they might actually be. It is quite possible that people predicted BBB would not consider a course advertised as CCC. Obviously they have to get enough students to make the course financially viable so Clearing may have to be "flexible". Discoveruni is the place to see what the actual entry points were like.

DS1 had friends with offers from Leeds in 2019 and there was no flexibility.

I think some of the universities have not worked out what is in Clearing yet. Bristol has nothing there at the moment, which is unlikely to be the case on results day.

Shimy · 06/07/2022 10:40

@Monkey2001 100% what you said re: wanting to be perceived as very selective. Sometimes I feel they go over the top with it/ shoot themselves in the foot...Sussex looking at you! DS1 fell in love with Sussex at first viewing however, their standard offer was 2-3 grades higher than his predicted. They made a standard offer on those high grades which was odd as for the 2yrs prior they had been in Clearing for his course practically begging for applicants from standard offer AAB down to CDD). DS rejected them as he felt it was risky. Lo and behold they went into Clearing again for his yr at CDD, lower than what DS got. I feel they must've lost out on some really good candidates.

And he is in to Oxford with brilliant results!

It has been such a stressful day. Logged on to UCAS first thing expecting it to update and then kept refreshing periodically. School then emailed to say UCAS might not update today so to only expect them at 2.45 by logging in to IB portal. DD, DH and I each separately took the dog for a walk to get our minds off results. Poor thing obligingly went for all 3 walks but then refused to go with the dog walker when he came at lunch time (I had forgotten he comes on Weds as I’m usually at work). She took her blanket and hid behind the TV where no one could get her. Of course at 2.45 computer froze so then we played “How many government ministers will resign while we wait?”.

And breathe …
