OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 16/06/2022 12:42

...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@singingstones I missed your posts about an endoscopy. I had one recently - opted for sedation as everyone who’d had one recommended & it was fine.

Hope yours goes ok too.

Heifer · 16/06/2022 21:07

Welcome back @BlueMarigold I did wonder if you were busy as noticed you hadn't posted for a while. I can read comments on my mobile but not post anything so have to wait till on the PC (hence my even longer posts than usual) ;-) Is your DD feeling better now? Hope she rocks tomorrows Biology paper and then gets to rest up before the next one next Friday. (has she got others next week apart from Biology?

Well I didn't manage to drink as much water as I meant to - clean forgot this afternoon tbh so will try again tomorrow.

Seems a lot of us had reflux issues - is it an woman of a certain age thing? Or have you all had it for years? Mine was quite sudden a year or so ago. My problem is that I can't actually remember when/how long for/what the doctor prescribed. I know I really should go back as it's started up again mildly but don't want to get as bad as last time.

Good luck for Biology, Politics and Spanish tomorrow (that's all that is listed for AQA so sorry if other subjects with other boards I've missed out - good luck to you too).

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 21:08

@ealingwestmum I don't know what he needs to do really. The airline sent him a link when he booked flights several weeks ago to where they needed to go for a test. It was £50 each for the test. Paid already.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2022 21:08

I meant to say thanks @ealingwestmum

singingstones · 16/06/2022 21:11

Thanks for the tip @Decorhate, I will opt for sedation as well I think, as I imagine it will be quite unpleasant. Can you drive home afterwards?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 16/06/2022 21:14

Hope it’s going, rather than coming, icanbewhatiwant, but I guess there’s always a risk he’ll still test positive regardless - that happened to a few people who had had COVID a month before they travelled when DH went away with work at Christmas.
Keeping everything crossed for him.

Glad to see you back BlueMarigold, but really sorry your DD is poorly - rotten timing. Has she got a GP certificate for special consideration, or is she not poorly enough?

Cantonet · 16/06/2022 21:27

@singingstones you can't drive after sedation. So you will need someone to pick you up. I had to pick up DH after one once. It's much better with sedation.

Decorhate · 16/06/2022 22:17

@singingstones You are not out for long but as @Cantonet said you should not drive home. I took it easy for the rest of the day too. A good excuse to!

BlueMarigold · 16/06/2022 22:19

@Heifer good luck to you for Biology tomorrow too! And to anyone else who has exams.

@Alsoplayspiccolo DD got a doctors letter and the school have sent it off for special consideration. The school don’t think it will make much difference though. They moved her to the edge of the exam room with a bucket. Not ideal…

She is better now so it’s only affected two papers last week.

NCTDN · 16/06/2022 22:22

@HarrietDVane I can't wait for Spanish to be over tomorrow. Then there's only one left Grin

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2022 22:33

AQA have now apologised over Law cock up...

AnneOfCleavage · 16/06/2022 22:43

Thanks for new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and updated list @singingstones

@Cantonet Yep, 6mths since my booster too and i am hearing of friends who are getting it for the first time now. I had it 8mths ago so could easily get it again.

@BlueMarigold I also can't post on the app only on the PC so I can only post sporadically too. Very annoying.

Lots of DD's friends have finished their exams today so are celebrating already. She has til next Wed to finish and so I think she'll celebrate at Prom - which they are organising themselves as school can't be bothered. Her dress is the one she bought for year 11 prom so she'll finally get to wear it. luckily she still likes it.

Seems lots of us on here have onlies so once they are at Uni it'll be so different. I feel lucky in that she has a gap year agreed with her firm and insurance so I get to keep her at home another year. I will hopefully glean lots of tips from those who are going this year and as yours are going into their second year I'll be a nervous first time mum next September - eek!

So hot today and hotter still tomorrow. I'm hot flushing so much more today and am dreading going to bed in a bit as know the night sweats will be ramped up too.

Good luck @singingstones and yes always go for sedation.

Delphigirl · 16/06/2022 23:14

Thank you for new thread!
def a lot of covid going around. I understand there are two new strains and having had omicron doesn’t give you much resistance to either. So if booster is running out then even a previous omicron infection won’t bolster immunity against these two.

DS nervous about biology 2 tomorrow. Still has another 3 papers next week. I really feel for him. One of his friends finished a few days ago but is still showing up at school as he is bored - nobody to hang out with as most others are still going…

HarrietDVane · 16/06/2022 23:20

NCTDN · 16/06/2022 22:22

@HarrietDVane I can't wait for Spanish to be over tomorrow. Then there's only one left Grin

Three more exams for DD, including tomorrow's. Just hope the papers are kind to them.

Monkey2001 · 16/06/2022 23:41

@icanbewhatiwant I think your DS is quite independent, but can you make sure he has read the rules properly so he does not get caught out at the last minute? If there is a risk he might still be testing positive on PCR but he wants to go, he should look into whether he does actually still need the test. The CDC only announced that tests were not required from 12th June a couple of weeks ago, so he would have booked it before the rule change. I don't think you have to disclose vaccination status. The link I shared says that you can't travel within 10 days of first testing positive, even if asymptomatic, so he will not be following the American rules if he goes. He won't be the only one, but it is definitely worth knowing the rules and deciding based on full facts before you get to the airport.

Oblomov22 · 17/06/2022 06:08

Welcome back BlueMarigold, I did think the special consideration 3% was very measly.

I am prepping for a Saturday bbq for 8. Marinating Loins of pork and chicken kebabs. They are all our Dorset camping friends, one set their dd same age as ds1, friends for 12 years, is also off to see Harry Styles, with Orange, Crazy, Singing and Mummy. So, Yesterday I de-headed flowers, cleaned downstairs toilet and kitchen sink, and the fridge that I realised embarrassingly hadn't been cleaned this year? Blush

BlueMarigold · 17/06/2022 06:45

I didn’t realise the special consideration could be up to 3%. We will never know what happened.

Good luck to all the children taking exams today!

icanbewhatiwant · 17/06/2022 06:58

@Monkey2001 thanks. He's sorted the app on his phone. So it shows third vaccine in Jan. They have booked lateral flow tests at a place in paddington via a link through the airline. Someone on the university thread said their niece flew to USA a few days ago and needed a covid test to go. So I don't know how he finds out. I'll wait to see what his test is this morn. he may have had it a few days already. But I still tested positive day 12. I didn't test after that.

Good luck for those taking exams today. It's going to be hot.

icanbewhatiwant · 17/06/2022 07:03

@Monkey2001 where did you see he can't travel for 10 days after a positive test? At least that would mean insurance would cover him. But I don't think it will cover the other lad going with him.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 17/06/2022 07:10

Oh what a lovely thread, I’m so sad I didn’t see this before
DS2 has 2 more exams and then is off to Loughborough on 26th June- he is part of the pre season training for the performance athletes but still needs A*AA on results day
we only found out 2 weeks ago that he would need to move up in June so its a lot sooner than I was prepared for
good luck to everyone taking exams on the hottest day of the year- DS2 is dreading it

Volterra · 17/06/2022 07:13

@BlueMarigold welcome back, so sorry to hear DD was ill💐
Good luck to everyone today 🍀 Really hoping FM today is an improvement to last paper and can’t wait to get him home.

We have a meeting with our buyers today so they can convince us their new mortgage application will go through , survey is at least booked now.

singingstones · 17/06/2022 07:32

Good luck to all the biologists and further mathematicians today (and anyone else), all power to their elbows 🍀

Welcome Tantrums, that sounds very exciting and a bit alarming that he's going so soon! Does he have a break to come home for a bit before term starts or is this it?

Seeline · 17/06/2022 07:35

Welcome @TantrumsAndBalloons - that is a quick turnaround for your DS! Is he actually moving into halls?

God - it's hot to be sitting exams! I don't think DD has slept for 3 nights. She gave up on bio revision yesterday after already done 2 exams, so goodness knows how this morning will go.

Good luck to everyone today 🍀🍀

Volterra · 17/06/2022 07:38

Welcome @TantrumsAndBalloons . Good luck to your DS, that’s a lot for you all to get your heads around.

Horrible day for exams in the heat today. I feel really hot, grumpy and pissed off with it all now as feels a bit endless so goodness knows what they must be feeling.

collywobble · 17/06/2022 07:45

Good luck to everyone today sitting exams in this heat. DS has politics today , it's his last exam but his worst as it's American politics and he has said his mind is a complete blank when he tries to revise. His younger brother has just been offered a great apprenticeship so he's now having a bit of a wobble about actually going to uni as he doesn't see the point so is considering applying for apprenticeships now the exams are over. I'm thinking it's just the thought of more exams for the next three years that's putting him off.
