...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Our last exam is Computer Science onFriday. I’ve been more concerned to keep her relaxed after last weeks meltdowns, so agreed a minimal revision timetable with her. We really have no idea how she’s done so far, but she tells us that she didn’t revise for any, just pretended so it seemed too late to worry.
But she has been offered a generous bursary, and so ,in the hope that the other 2 subjects haven’t been complete washouts, and with a hopeful ish calculation that she might be sitting on a D for Computer Science, and needing a C, I have asked her to step it up a bit. Softening that with obvious care, like ironing her T-shirts and taking her out for lunch after tomorrows counselling.
life is so tricky.

Theprom dresses have also started to arrive….

Monkey2001 · 21/06/2022 12:28

Sympathetic vibes to those contending with terrible journeys. A 2 hour walk sounds quite daunting, hope he likes thinking as he walks, but Maths does not lend itself to revision on the hoof as well as other subjects.

There is talk over on the Medicine thread of AQA disregarding yesterday's Chemistry paper because it was leaked. Surely they can just do analysis and investigate candidates who have performed surprisingly well in that paper?! Seems unfair to people who genuinely did well in that paper.

scabby1 · 21/06/2022 13:35

Hi all,
Ds got to school easily in the end- he walked for a bit and then hopped onto a few buses. The traffic was fine and the buses were not as packed as previous strikes. I’m very relieved! Hopefully coming back will be just as straight forward.
Due to the strikes his school is actually closed today for everyone except the students doing public exams, so he has had a quiet library to revise in.
Good luck again to everyone today. X

LimitIsUp · 21/06/2022 13:39

How have this mornings exams gone?

LimitIsUp · 21/06/2022 13:40

Well done to your ds @scabby1, a lot of kids would have freaked out at that on an exam day but he is obviously pretty grounded and taken it all in his stride

crazycrofter · 21/06/2022 13:52

Dd said RS was the worst yet and she legit knew nothing!? I’m sure that’s not the case but at least it’s all done now. Glad your ds got there ok @scabby1 .

Volterra · 21/06/2022 14:46

Is Chemistry 3 papers? If they void it would they just use the two to do the grades? Yet another AQA cock up. So sorry for anyone effected, really rough to have this uncertainty after all this hard work.

singingstones · 21/06/2022 15:38

DS had applied maths this afternoon, said it wasn't great but not as bad as the pure paper.
Great relief to be finished.
Wishing continuing good luck to those with exams to come.

MirandaWest · 21/06/2022 15:41

I am waiting for DS to say he'd like picking up - their exams start at 1:30 in the afternoon and generally a few minutes late so he should be finished by now.

He's said he's going Out tonight 😂

Monkey2001 · 21/06/2022 16:48

2 people on Medicine thread said their schools are preparing TAGs for Chemistry. That would be so unfair if just AQA do that!

ChristopherTracy · 21/06/2022 16:57

DS is back from maths - the statistics part was ok, the mechanics slightly harder which is odd as it is normally the other way round for him. One more left!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/06/2022 16:58

How are TAGs any more fairer at this point than allowing the leaked paper?
Surely there’s potential for a greater number of grades to be inflated if TAGs are used than there is for the leak?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/06/2022 17:07

TAGs are not fair in this instance. If AQA are accepting that a leak has happened it would seem the sensible thing would be to run a new paper. I know this would feel terrible for the honest students but, depending on how many cheaters are out there, the grade boundaries as they stand are likely to be affected. I think the peopl who do this sort of thing are dispicable and really feel for the kids affected by it.

EwwSprouts · 21/06/2022 17:16

@ChristopherTracy Same feedback here. 'Everyone' found mechanics half much harder than expected.

I can't believe AQA would back track to TAGs. I think dumping the leaked paper and awarding grades based on the other two seems more objective and transparent.

Takeittotheboss · 21/06/2022 17:34

Feedback is"I don't want to think about it, they were both awful" ☹......"but now I'm free!" DS on RS and Maths.

scabby1 · 21/06/2022 17:44

thanks @limitisup and @crazycrofter. Ds is generally very laid back, often frustratingly so.
He is back from OCR maths & mechanics. (No problems with buses and didn’t need to walk 2 hours!)
He found the pure section “decent” but said the mechanics was horrendous. He’s not the type to dwell on things, but he seemed very subdued. Does anyone else have a DC doing OCR maths? I think I may have asked this before and the answer was no….
Anyway, the best of luck to everyone. X

I have no skin in the game (Ds does do AQA Chem) but I am inclined to agree - award based on two of the three papers discounting the leaked one

LimitIsUp · 21/06/2022 18:02

I meant - I have no skin in the game as ds does NOT do AQA chem

LimitIsUp · 21/06/2022 18:03

Heat frying my brain today

MirandaWest · 21/06/2022 18:05

DS is now free from the tyranny of exams. And is out in the sunshine with his friends and I am sure amounts of alcohol!

He felt RE was fine. Preferred the stats part of maths - really didn't like the mechanics part at first but was able to do more of it as it went by. Now just have to wait until 18th August to see what will be.

Volterra · 21/06/2022 18:08

@scabby1 DS does OCR maths but it is OCR Mei so think it might be different.

scabby1 · 21/06/2022 18:27

@Volterra yes, that’s different. I hope his paper went well today.

ChristopherTracy · 21/06/2022 18:28

Just had a call from school re possible problem with some of DS work. Got to go in and see them. Never ends does it!

Oblomov22 · 21/06/2022 19:09

I had an email from school that ds2 (year 8) is behind with his maths revision , so I'm sat here doing negative gradients, and indices.
