DS had a fire drill this week but it was mid morning so he was dressed and had eaten.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 11/10/2018 14:48

Dd's wasn't a drill. Either someone burned their toast or it was a 'prank'.

doistayordoigo · 11/10/2018 17:03

DS has had two fire alarms, both caused by one of the downstairs flats I think. Think they were mid evening but hopefully he was dressed!

PandaG · 11/10/2018 17:11

DS had a fire drill at 6.30 am...he forgot his keys so had to pick up a spare from the porters' lodge. He is glad I suggested he take a dressing gown now!

TheThirdOfHerName · 12/10/2018 14:12

Well now I'm eating my words...
The wound on his knee is looking slightly inflamed today and exuding some pus (I will spare you from the photo). Have told him to keep it clean and make an appointment with the practice nurse.

He has not yet turned into Fluff Monster though.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/10/2018 14:20

Oh no. I hope he is being sensible about it.

Nettleskeins · 12/10/2018 15:20

expose to air as much as possible? shorts? no baths?

ds said he isn't coming back this weekend because he "has choir". I'm actually delighted he is enjoying life to this extent! Otherwise I might think home is a poor substitute for university Hmm

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/10/2018 16:19

Good news about jobs cats and lonicera.

I hope everyone who was feeling poorly is feeling better now. I had a rotten cold last week but feeling better now.

DD was talking to me last night. It's her first full week of lectures and the first ones that actually involved any content were yesterday. So she hasn't got any self study to do yet, I'm sure it will ramp up as they cover more content. She's joined up to a club every night by the time she's got wind band, orchestra, board games, folk group, and one other that I can't remember. Then she's doing living history society on a Sunday, where she's learning to fight with medieval weapons. She's having lots of fun, although her replies to my questions are still pretty monosyllabic.

I don't think home cooked food would go down very well with DD. She rarely ate what we were having anyway, preferring to do herself something bland. She claims to be eating vegetables, but I'm not entirely sure I believe her.

TheThirdOfHerName · 12/10/2018 17:27

He's leaving it open to the air. Someone in his flat has given him a dressing he can cover it with in bed - thank you to whichever parent equipped their offspring with a fully stocked first aid kit.

UrsulaPandress · 12/10/2018 18:26

DD had a scab on her knee that got infected and spread. She still has the scar. Another black mark in my mothering handbook.

starfleet · 12/10/2018 23:21

DS has a well equipped first aid kit containing various potions and lotions thanks to a very good pharmacist friend.

He has packed for his field trip tomorrow but thinks he may have forgotten something vitally important. We have exchanged texts as to what it might possibly be but he can't recall. Me, I've been sitting out this evening on the terrace drinking coffee and enjoying the (very mild) Norwegian autumn.

voilets · 13/10/2018 08:27

ooh - poor lad a wound to sort out. My DS is a bit over anxious about his health- so I get also sorts of questions over the phone periodically. He did once hurt his leg badly after falling on a spilt alcoholic beverage, worse for wear himself and then had to limp to lectures!

No fire drills to report.

Am liking the idea of Norwegian weather- am offon a ramble today in autumnal countryside with a cream tea mid way between villages . Joined a group to prepare for empty nest! Smile

GnomeDePlume · 13/10/2018 12:52

We too have good news on the job front. DD1 has secured a research assistant job. Very pleased as it is a 'proper' science job. I looked at company website and understood almost nothing!

DD2 is coming back next weekend. Will be interested to see how she is managing the course load.

Sorry to hear about inconvenient fire alarms. When I was a student you could easily spot the final year students as they would exit the building with their dissertations in carrier bags. The hall was wood paneled with distinctly dodgy wiring. One spark and the whole thing would have gone up.

Nettleskeins · 13/10/2018 13:05

ds has now texted to say I cannot visit him to "buy him a pie" in The Covered Market because he needs to tidy his room for a room inspection on Monday. Dh sent him an extra tenner on Friday, so his desire for the pie in proportion to his adversion to being spied on, is in deficit.

I might still go there, as it is such a beautiful day

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/10/2018 13:05

Congrats to your DD gnome. That sounds impressive!

Nettleskeins · 13/10/2018 13:10

starfleet is that a walking group? I want to join something similar, and go to places like Mallorca in autumn, basically the holiday that never happens with kids in tow.
I went on a walking holiday in Norway, many many aeons ago, going from village to village was it the Jotunheim and various Dals, as a pre- student ironically. We had no proper walking gear and were laughed at by everyone who was properly kitted out as we scampered up the mountains (4 girls/women aged 17-18) For some reason we were fine without walking boots, or goretex anoraks, in jumpers and jeans and gymshoes

Nettleskeins · 13/10/2018 13:12

oh sorry, I have confused Starfleet with Voilets one is in autumnal walking group and the other in Norway, sorry!!!Blush

LoniceraJaponica · 13/10/2018 14:46

It's weirdly warm here today - 22 degrees in Sheffield.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 13/10/2018 15:46

It is really warm here too but lashing it down where dd is.

Congratulations on dd1's job gnome.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/10/2018 17:24

DD's first day at work was a disaster. She had 10 minutes training on the till from someone with a strong accent and a speech impediment which she found hard to follow. Then made a couple of mistakes and had a panic attack. I had to pick her up early.

I have worked in retail before, and we weren't put on the till until we had been working in the shop for a while and were familiar with everything.

I think it is a shit thing to do to throw someone with absolutely no experience on a till on the busiest Saturday in ages and expect them not to make mistakes. Poor DD was in floods of tears. Fortunately the boyfriend has stepped up and she is on Skype with him just now.

HesMyLobster · 13/10/2018 17:27

Wow! Congratulations on the job news Gnome - that sounds v impressive!

Weird weather day here - think we've had pretty much everything! The only persistent element is the wind!

HesMyLobster · 13/10/2018 17:29

Oh no Lonicera that does sound unfair! Your poor DD Sad

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/10/2018 17:35

That sounds horrible lonicera. I hope your DD is ok! Is she planning on going back, or is she going to try for a different job? Flowers for her.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/10/2018 17:49

She has another job which starts in a couple of weeks, which is the one she really wanted. I think the job she went to today, which is a zero hours contract is the one she was planning to start and then drop if the other one worked out.

She is going to try another shift on Monday when it will be quieter. I felt absolutely gutted for her. She has recently cut down on her anti anxiety meds, and was doing so well until now as well.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 13/10/2018 17:51

I am sorry lonerica that sounds horrible.
