That is horrible lonicera. Both my DDs have worked in supermarkets and I dont think either were put on tills immediately. So unfair to set someone up to stumble like that.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/10/2018 19:17

She is still on Skype. The BF has had 3 days in a row of excessive alcohol consumption with very late nights/early mornings and is having a night off. He looks decidedly green about the gills (I have just been up to say hello).

voilets · 13/10/2018 22:31

Poor DD lonicera. My DS had a bad experience in a supermarket job. They learn from it evethough it's hard. My DS was very embarrased.

Fab weather here. Walk was brill.

voilets · 13/10/2018 22:33

How great gnome. So exciting for your DD.

GnomeDePlume · 14/10/2018 06:32

I am really pleased for DD1. She had said she wasnt sure how well the interview had gone as it had felt like an exam. Lots of questions about the different experiments she had worked on and different techniques she had used. She came out quite drained.

lonicera it is horrible when you are new in a job and feel that you have been left to sink or swim. I hope your DD feels able to go back.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/10/2018 09:59

DD has another chance tomorrow when it should be quieter. I will liken it to getting back on to a horse after being thrown off.

As an aside, talking about the BF. How long will it take for most students to realise that having a hangover most days of the week isn't a great idea, especially when it means missing or sleeping through lectures? He has been at university for 5 weeks now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/10/2018 10:06

Good for your dd Lonicera :) That shows some real resilience.

Sorry to hear about the bad shift at the shop. People think shopwork is easy, but it can be long and tiring.

Well done on the research assistants job. Good for the cv!

I went to Norway many moons ago. Loved the country. Good looking men, if I recall. Blond and gorgeous.

Dc has a mentor at work. He’s just lost his placement due to failing his exams. Sobering.

Sunny weather here yesterday. 24! Rain today.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/10/2018 10:14

Sorry to hear about your DS Petalflowers. I hope he can pick himself up.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 14/10/2018 11:05

Was that the mentor or your DS, Petalflowers?

UrsulaPandress · 14/10/2018 12:35

DD has been to a 'Vintage Clothes Sale' this morning. I tried to explain to her that we used to call them Jumble Sales Grin.

One of the boys she knows had a friend from home down for the weekend. They had pre drinks in DD's flat but he got so drunk they ended up leaving him on the sofa in the kitchen. When DD got up this morning he had gone but had been sick on the carpet Envy - not envy.

She is trying to get in touch with the original boy to come and clean it up but he is not answering his phone. That'll learn 'em.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/10/2018 12:54

I did wonder what had happened to jumbles sales these days. Clearly they have been bigged up and marketed as something more upmarket.

I have many memories of helping out at Guide and Sea Rangers jumble sales. They were always massively popular, and we had big queues at the door just before they started.

Apparently the pre-drinks is massive these days. Upwards 9 or 10 shots per student before going out is the norm in some flats. When DD visited her boyfriend she had so much to drink that she didn't go out as she had had enough.

starfleet · 14/10/2018 15:40

I loved a jumble sale! Our church hall used to host them most Fridays until about 10 years ago. There is a shop in Manchester that DS likes to go in. He calls it vintage - I don't. It is piled high with musty tracksuits, nylon ties and manky football tops.

Oslo is lovely at the moment - sunny, a bit breezy but not cold. No walking trips just a few gentle strolls!

LoniceraJaponica · 14/10/2018 15:46

8 degrees and wet here in South Yorkshire. Such a contrast to yesterday's temperatures.

catslife · 14/10/2018 16:51

Busy few days here. dd has started her new job. She had a day's induction and some training and has done several shifts. Because of her charity shop experience, she has been allocated till work so far and she has found it OK.
She has also had her 19th birthday and was very pleased that one friend travelled back from uni to attend her birthday do.

LoniceraJaponica · 14/10/2018 17:00

I suggested charity shop work to DD to get experience in retail, but she was rather reluctant. I wish she had done this.

catslife · 14/10/2018 17:19

dds sixth form tutor recommended the charity shop volunteering lonerica to give dd some further work experience for her CV. I doubt she would have taken much notice if I had suggested it!

flatmouse · 14/10/2018 17:30

DS coming back next weekend! Smile its a family friends birthday on the Saturday night. He's coming back Friday evening to go out with local mates Friday night, then play for local rugby team on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing him Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 14/10/2018 17:46

Yes, you are probably right catslife. It's funny how teachers can exert more authority over our children than us parents.

This is why I take my hat off to parents who successfully home educate.

Petalflowers · 14/10/2018 19:59

Sorry, the mentor lost his job, not dc.

Odd cooking a smaller roast again this evening. Cooked too many Yorkshires which dc 2 happily consumed.

UrsulaPandress · 14/10/2018 20:01

Sorry. What if you mean Too many Yorkshire's?

UrsulaPandress · 14/10/2018 20:01

Do.

Nettleskeins · 14/10/2018 20:32

I went to visit ds1 on Saturday. After a couple of missed texts, I finally met up with him, and took him out for a meal where we had sparkling water. He was in excellent form, seemed very happy and cheerful was enjoying course, telling me tales of nightclubs in the city and his walks home at 2am stone cold sober by the time he reached his bed (apparently) He looked perfect weight, (had been a bit flabby when he left) and very handsome - clearly nights of clubbing and no proper meals had done wonders for his physique/skin Shock

Then he suddenly turned up today at home (i just happened to be away today) and did his washing and slept/ate food. And then departed almost as silently as he had arrived....ds2 apparently couldn't cope with the "interloper" and started insulting him and saying mean things about polys, Thank goodness I wasn't there and had such a nice meeting with him yesterday away from the horrors of family life!

voilets · 14/10/2018 20:33

Yesterday, beautiful autumnal hike. Today in pyjamas working Blush didn't leave house for grey drizzle and downpours all day.

Haha. I'm sure the extra yorkshires went down well. We're now cooking for 2. Very odd.

Nettleskeins · 14/10/2018 20:50

fwiw, both dh and I are very concerned about ds1's disrupted sleep patterns, caused by going out late and then going to lectures sleep deprived, sleeping in on days with no lectures till long time after lunch. I texted him this evening to suggest he went to bed at 11pm as he had only had 4 hours sleep over last 24 hours and his reply was, too much tidying and work to do..it really is a vicious cycle, not helped by lectures being at 12 or later most days, although in short term that seems lucky break and stops him missing stuff. I think he is going to run out of time soon though, if he is only awake at socialising hours not at "working" hours.

I'm hoping it is going to change when everyone else increasingly runs out of money. I am also hoping one fine morning he is just going to wake up and think, there are better things to do than go out partying. I want to go for a ramble! -very unlikely-
