I love a good food ideas thread on mumsnet so thought I'd start my own.

I've started having porridge in the morning - made with milk but in the microwave due to time. I'm mainly stirring in fruit but I'd love to hear any other ideas. The quicker/less effort the better as I'm also doing breakfast for the DC at the same time. Though any more indulgent/more effort ones welcome for the weekend.

My favourite is to mix in ground ginger before cooking, but ground cinnamon and some mixed allspice makes a nice Christmassy flavour and smell. I sometimes add dried mixed fruits or even some mincemeat for extra Christmas vibes.

grafittiartist · 14/11/2025 06:36

Salt- sorry!!

SparklyGlitterballs · 14/11/2025 06:38

I'm a complete heathen and have been known to stir in a dollop of Nutella 🤣

MsGinaLinetti · 14/11/2025 06:38

I make porridge overnight in the slow cooker- something enormously comforting about waking to a pot of smooth, creamy oats.
toppings/ additions: dates, blueberries, banana, honey, cinnamon, chopped apple, maple syrup, pecans, nutmeg, sultanas, flaxseeds, tahini, chopped pear,

Ooh, reminds me of chocolate ready brek 😋

@MagpiePiooh, that sounds yummy. I have all the spices you've mentioned but might stick mixed fruit on my next supermarket delivery and give it a go.

@grafittiartistin the interests of trying new things I may give it a go sometime...

Here for the suggestions!

I love a spoon of crunchy peanut butter stirred through mine.

Can’t beat golden syrup if you want it sweet and nostalgia vibes.

Mr Scarlett once had it with cream, pecans and whisky in a Dublin restaurant but I’m guessing that’s a bit much for a Wednesday morning.

Banana underneath with a spoon of peanut butter and honey on top. Cinnamon and brown sugar. Maple syrup, persimmon, chopped apple and chopped nuts are all good. I like a spoon of mincemeat at Christmas too. Also try different milks, ie almond coconut etc.

loveawineloveacrisp · 14/11/2025 06:41

Sliced up banana and sprinkle of sweet cinnamon.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 14/11/2025 06:42

Oats with buckwheat and Grated apple as it cooks then topped with walnuts and a drizzle of honey.

muddyford · 14/11/2025 06:42

Golden syrup. And a splash of cream. Scottish friend swears by a tot of Glenmorangie...

JetFlight · 14/11/2025 06:43

I make grated apple and cinnamon but I do it on the hob so it cooks longer and slower. I tried grated carrots, raisins and mixed spice once which was good. Like a carrot cake.

foodyum · 14/11/2025 06:43

@SparklyGlitterballsI've been tempted with that but resisted so far (just)

@MsGinaLinettiI bet! Thanks for the ideas!

@SoScarletItWashmm, whiskey is tempting having got up with the 4yo and 8mo at the crack of dawn.... but maybe not the best idea 😆

Stewed apples and cinnamon.

GreenGodiva · 14/11/2025 06:45

I use 1/2 Jar of apple sauce and add cinnamon. Or chopped mixed nuts and maple syrup. A tsp of biscoff spread mixed in.

Another with the booze... I didn't think I'd have to specify alcohol free* on a thread about porridge 😆

*I am very tempted though... do you think baileys would work? 🤔

@JetFlightcarrot cake porridge is always suggested as a weaning recipe... neither of mine were very impressed though.

Friend topped her porridge with Bailey's all through the pandemic. Cream, alcohol and sweetness all in one. And it's only £11 a litre in Sainsbury's atm.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 14/11/2025 06:50

Crunchy peanut butter and a couple of squares of dark chocolate. But I also like butter and brown sugar if I want to channel my childhood!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/11/2025 06:50

I make steel cut oats or quick oats on the stove with water. It's 7 mins for the steel cut and 5 for the quick.
For the dc I mix theirs with butter and some cinnamon then chopped banana. I'll add blackberries or strawberries if I have them. Alternately I'll add cinnamon apples that I make in the microwave (chopped, cinnamon, bit of water to steam).
For mine it's oats w a bit of brown sugar (or maple syrup) and cinnamon, chopped nuts and sliced banana.
I rarely add milk, but if I do then I warm it and foam it like you do for a cafe latte.

TalomaPaith · 14/11/2025 06:51

Crunchy peanut butter, dates, blueberries and flaxseed

Taytotots · 14/11/2025 06:54

Either mixed berries (frozen and defrosted a bit in the microwave) or grated apple and cinnamon. Then once cooked a dollop of Greek yogurt and a drizzle of maple syrup.

ShaunaOfTheDead · 14/11/2025 06:55

A dollop of Greek yoghurt and a spoonful of peanut butter.

StrongLikeMamma · 14/11/2025 07:00

blueberries, Blackberries, banana, maple syrup, plain yogurt, toasted seeds, peanut butter, cream, raspberries - any combination

Cocorico22 · 14/11/2025 07:01

Yes yes to Nutella, golden syrup, banana, not all at once obvs. We make ours with oat milk for allergy reasons, seems a good halfway house between water and dairy!

baileys sounds lush, has anyone tried advocaat?
