I love a good food ideas thread on mumsnet so thought I'd start my own.

I've started having porridge in the morning - made with milk but in the microwave due to time. I'm mainly stirring in fruit but I'd love to hear any other ideas. The quicker/less effort the better as I'm also doing breakfast for the DC at the same time. Though any more indulgent/more effort ones welcome for the weekend.

Another with the booze... I didn't think I'd have to specify alcohol free* on a thread about porridge 😆

*I am very tempted though... do you think baileys would work? 🤔

Baileys works on everything. I especially like it on Ice Cream (not for breakfast though...)

Does anyone have any savoury ideas? Veggie for preference.

Google suggests adding mushrooms and the like which makes it some weird risotto in my head… or eggs which I can barely type without retching.

My boss always has porridge with egg. He does this -

Half cooks the porridge (in water, not milk) in the microwave, crack an egg on top and cook for the remaining time. He sometimes adds a splash of soy sauce at the end.

I think making it with water removes a lot of the grossness of adding the egg, somehow.

Apparently it's delicious (I'm not convinced but I am also not in the market for a savoury porridge option so I've never been tempted to try it).

CoffeeMad18 · 14/11/2025 14:39

My fave is cocoa powder and a dollop of Seville orange marmalade or DH just has brown sugar on his.
Loads of lovely ideas on here.

Mizztikle · 14/11/2025 14:39

Apple and cinnamon.

I get mine from the Oat Pantry. My favourite is their cherry bakewell flavour and they also do things like salted cameral, lemon drizzle etc.

There are usually seasonal ones too like mince pie flavour.

As well as oats they do granola.

Golden syrup. And a splash of cream. Scottish friend swears by a tot of Glenmorangie...

I have been to a few B&Bs in Scotland where they put whisky in the porridge! As well as one in Chester, rather randomly.

SoScarletItWas · 14/11/2025 15:45

All this talk of boozy porridge (I know I started it with the whisky, sorry) has made me remember the aging jar of cherries in kirsch languishing at the back of the fridge. Bring on boozy Black Forest porridge as a weekend special!

I'm busy tomorrow but can be at yours for 9 on Sunday 😆

Apple, mixed dried fruit, a good teaspoon or two of mixed spice and/or cinnamon, lots of Demerara sugar on top, and cream/Elmlea if you’re feeling really indulgent!

FishPie2 · 14/11/2025 16:45

To anybody who makes it in the slow cooker - do you put it in the fridge and reheat another day?
I usually make overninght oats but looking to have porridge now it is getting colder but am quite impatient in the morning and just want to take it and eat. I could reheat it in the micro whilst the kettle is boiling if it will keep for a few days in the fridge.
I usually have oats, chia seeds, soya milk, dollop of full fat yogurt and any kind of fruit that I have in the bowl.

Becs258 · 14/11/2025 16:48

Bit of golden syrup, few drops almond essence and some strawberry/ other jam- Bakewell style. Also works for overnight oats.

I make pinhead oatmeal porridge on occasion, takes half an hour on the hob, so I make a few portion keep in fridge and microwave in the morning.

when I can’t be bothered with that a bowl of normal porridge oats microwaves in 3 minutes in the morning.

Currently having peanut butter, cinnamon and blueberries most days. When I have more time, I love to make caramelised apples - cook finely sliced apple in butter with cinnamon and maple syrup. Berry chia jam is also tasty.

StrongLikeMamma · 14/11/2025 17:04

Ooo peanut butter grated dark chocolate (high in antioxidants)
🥜🍫

fishfingerbutty · 14/11/2025 17:07

Nigel Slater, in his Christmas Chronicles, suggests topping porridge with stewed apples, cooked with cinnamon and cloves.
I also like mixing in some ground almonds while cooking the porridge, for nutty nutrition.
Porridge is a vehicle for so many delicious additions that I’d happily eat it three times a day !

StrongLikeMamma · 14/11/2025 17:16

The porridge diet 🥣🤣👍

ruralwanderer · 14/11/2025 17:19

Blitz a few dates with boiling water and a smidge of peanut butter and honey and mix into porridge. Absolutely delicious and good for you 👍

Todayisanewday75 · 15/11/2025 06:45

I put grated courgette in mine, adds volume but you can’t really taste it so not exactly savoury. I also add frozen raspberries and protein powder to keep me full. And top with Greek yogurt. Doesn’t sound delicious but it really is. Also lately pumpkin pie spice too.

foodyum · 15/11/2025 06:56

@fishfingerbuttyI'm beginning to feel the same way 😆

Had banana and nutella this morning. Got mixed fruit (for mince pie porridge), pineapple and dessicated coconut (for pina colada porridge) coming in our asda delivery tomorrow for the week...

Do you cook the courgette first? Wouldn't it go all watery?

I add raspberries ( frozen) and peanut butter make with water

cocoa powder, just a teaspoon, peaches ( tinned or pears) make with water

layer with banana sliced yogurt & laced with cinnamon and made with coffee instead of milk ( I use espresso)

soaking the night before cooking helps your body absorb the nutrients so then add chai seeds for extra fibre. Berries of any kind in porridge prevent a sugar spike

MikeRafone · 15/11/2025 07:06

gratted carrot and sultanas with cinnamon & nuts - walnuts or mixed nuts ( I get the broken nuts in Sainsbury as they are much cheaper, or Aldi Lidl mixed nuts) add an orange if you have one, or satsuma on top
