I love a good food ideas thread on mumsnet so thought I'd start my own.

I've started having porridge in the morning - made with milk but in the microwave due to time. I'm mainly stirring in fruit but I'd love to hear any other ideas. The quicker/less effort the better as I'm also doing breakfast for the DC at the same time. Though any more indulgent/more effort ones welcome for the weekend.

Sultanas. And a sprinkle of demerara sugar for a little crunch.

OnlyOnAFriday · 15/11/2025 07:21

Coconut . I buy the flavouring in a bottle.

Xmasfairy86 · 15/11/2025 07:22

dollop of biscoff spread - delightful

off to make porridge after reading this thread!

Can’t beat brown sugar and/or banana in my humble porridge opinion!!

CrinaCara · 15/11/2025 07:25

What type of oats though? I grew up with Flahavan's in Ireland but despite living in Scotland, I use Morn Flakes Super oats

MikeRafone · 15/11/2025 07:03

I add raspberries ( frozen) and peanut butter make with water

cocoa powder, just a teaspoon, peaches ( tinned or pears) make with water

layer with banana sliced yogurt & laced with cinnamon and made with coffee instead of milk ( I use espresso)

soaking the night before cooking helps your body absorb the nutrients so then add chai seeds for extra fibre. Berries of any kind in porridge prevent a sugar spike

You make it with coffee? I assume you make the coffee with hot water then add the oats and heat on the hob/microwave until cooked? This is why I love mumsnet!

Funnily enough, I looked at the coffee I made whilst my porridge was microwaving yesterday and thought ‘hmmm surely there’s no reason I can’t combine these’ - thanks to @MikeRafone for confirming that coffee porridge is a thing!

I espresso ad top up to the correct amount of liquid to oats

you could add milk to the espresso to make up the liquid

i I use US cup measurements for oats, it’s the one time I believe cups are useful in the kitchen

think breakfast tiramisu, coffee yogurt and banana layers, sprinkle cocoa over the top

im buying frozen cherries this week, to make bla ck forest inspired porridge 👌😉

SoScarletItWas · 15/11/2025 07:58

Reading this thread has made me so happy - I thought I was a bit weird with my passion for porridge but now I know I’m not alone! (Except maybe for the turmeric…)

MikeRafone · 15/11/2025 08:02

Kirsh is like almond to taste

so almond essence and dark frozen cherrys, loaded with Lidl fat free Greek yogurt and sprinkled with cocoa

SchnizelVonKrumm · 15/11/2025 08:03

Frozen mango (add with the milk so it defrost while the porridge cooks) and desiccated coconut sprinkled on top.

Banana, cinnamon and chopped dates.

Maple syrup, dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds.

Grated carrot and apple, sultanas and cinammon.

Teaspoon of vanilla extract, dried apricots and flaked almonds.

I make breakfast pancakes with turmeric, I use soaked lentils and water , blitzed and add turmeric then use as a batter

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/11/2025 08:10

My favourites are:

banana, dates and walnuts

plums chopped up and done in the microwave with a bit of water and some cinnamon

I love yoghurt, but I don’t believe it has any place on top of porridge.

SlothCat · 15/11/2025 08:22

I've got a couple of porridge flavourings that I like

Grated apple put in whilst cooking sweetens it up with some cinnamon sprinkled on and banana on top. I only grate half the apple and then chop the rest up to have in the bowl. Sometimes I also put in a bit of ginger and nutmeg in

Biscoff topping is really nice

Frozen strawberry, raspberry and blueberry defrosted in the fridge and then all mixed in with the juice as well when cooking is really nice

I've just discovered overnight oats mixed in with kefir and pear juice is nice served with melon and pears is also really good if you were looking for a cold version

Just normal (non-frozen) raspberries and strawberries are also really good

I try to use the normal plain oats as I always thought they were probably healthier

Solasum · 15/11/2025 08:30

Tropical porridge: mashed banana and desiccated coconut stirred through before

chocolate orange porridge: Lindt balls, or cocoa powder, plus a spoonful of marmalade

Some great ideas here. Is porridge the most versatile of all foods?!

foodyum · 15/11/2025 08:39

@Solasumlindt balls is definitely a special occasion porridge 😆

Definitely adding marmalade to my shopping list!

Either:

  1. stewed damsons (defrosted from the freezer);
  2. chopped dates, with a mix of sunflower and pumpkin seeds; or
  3. dark muscovado sugar (when neither of the above available).

Currently mostly 2, but do have some 1 to defrost.

nush18 · 15/11/2025 11:51

Apple and cinnamon
Frozen cherries
Fruit with a spoon of chocolate spread
Banana

IBorAlevels · 15/11/2025 15:52

I do overnight oats in a mason jar, just put milk and oats in the jar with whatever you like and cook it in the morning. I like cinnamon so usually do a combo of that with honey or chocolate spread or fruits

SoScarletItWas · 16/11/2025 14:41

I have just had porridge with a bit of cocoa whilst cooking and then half a jar of the ancient cherries in kirsch rescued from the depths of the fridge and it was everything I hoped for #hic

foodyum · 16/11/2025 15:50

Sounds fab @SoScarletItWas- I'm a tad jealous. I had porridge made with coffee this morning, with m&s chocolate and speculoo wafers crushed in. Tomorrow will either be mince pie or pina colada depending on my mood in the morning 😆

Loving this thread, I adore porridge. Some fantastic ideas here, can't wait to try marmalade!

My usual is grated apple and pecan nuts and a drizzle of peanut butter, but I made these roast plums recently and they were delish. Lots more recipes on the Flahavans website too.

happygertie · 16/11/2025 21:22

Carrot cake flavour , I grate apple , and carrot into porridge , add cinnamon, mixed spice and nutmeg and top with raisins and pecans or walnuts, delish

dontletmedownbruce · 16/11/2025 21:24

Mashed banana, natural yoghurt, golden syrup, peanut butter. Often all four in the same bowl of porridge.
