I love a good food ideas thread on mumsnet so thought I'd start my own.

I've started having porridge in the morning - made with milk but in the microwave due to time. I'm mainly stirring in fruit but I'd love to hear any other ideas. The quicker/less effort the better as I'm also doing breakfast for the DC at the same time. Though any more indulgent/more effort ones welcome for the weekend.

Also love stewed rhubarb when it’s in season, add a bit of orange zest whilst stewing it’s delicious.

Chimneyonya · 16/11/2025 21:27

All the most unhealthy things

Nutella with chopped nuts and raisins
Salted Caramel with chopped apple
Sugar and a squeeze of lemon

soupyspoon · 16/11/2025 21:33

Cheese and peanut butter, together and apart.
I also sometimes have prunes and have had nutella too

I prefer savoury flavours. Its like risotto, I cook pinhead oatmeal, very very slowly, full fat milk.

I'm loving sliced banana and date syrup on porridge at the moment. I really recommend date syrup, it's rich and fruity, is lower GI than sugar and has good trace minerals in it. I use it loads instead of sugar or honey

I made cheese porridge once. My brain couldn't cope with the cognitive dissonance of it

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/11/2025 22:09

@CinnamonSweet73 I highly recommend a spoonful of bitter marmalade in rice pudding too.

CinnamonSweet73 · 16/11/2025 22:33

Sounds wonderful @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie !

I'm breaking out in hives at some of these suggestions. Courgettes and eggs in porridge? Marmalade? WTF!

Keep yer fauncy toppin's awa fae ma poridge!

Soz I’m Scottish but there’s nothing better than a heaped tablespoon of Nutella in porridge on a cold morning.

PerspicaciaTick · 17/11/2025 01:47

Brown sugar and butter.

I'm a complete heathen and have been known to stir in a dollop of Nutella 🤣

That’s my time of the month breakfast, so comforting!

foodyum · 17/11/2025 06:01

@soupyspooncheese? What type of cheese do you use?

@PerspicaciaTickmmm, that sounds yummy actually

@CinnamonSweet73thanks for sharing the link, I'll have a look.

I'm so glad I started this thread. I do apologise to@JamMakingWannaBeancestors though; I may try salt one day 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Strong cheddar.

Empress13 · 17/11/2025 06:12

My fave at mo is cooking some chopped apples with cinnamon on hob and then adding to porridge delish 😋

firstofallimadelight · 17/11/2025 06:51

I love -
berries, nuts and honey
apple, almonds, honey and cinnamon

Ladygodalmighty · 17/11/2025 13:00

For the weekend: Air fry Stornoway black pudding (its the best in the world) along with your favourite bacon (I like dry cured). Make your Scots Porridge oats as per the packet instructions. Before serving add crumbled black pudding and chopped bacon and mix through. It's delicious and very filling (you can also top with a poached egg) 😋

ShearLuxe · 17/11/2025 13:22

Growing up, we always had our porridge with a dollop of strawberry jam in the middle. If we were feeling bougee, we’d get a drizzle of tip top cream too. Instant childhood memories😁

Less is more imho.

I still have a little jam, or it’s banana with a little maple syrup. Always made with whole milk. It’s rather grim made with just water.

fishfingerbutty · 17/11/2025 15:01

Just returned to this thread and found that things have taken a dark turn.
Cheese? Egg and bacon and black pudding?
Surely they’re the next course?

A dark turn indeed. Perverts, the lot of them.

foodyum · 17/11/2025 15:48

@Ladygodalmightythat sounds.... interesting.

I wonder if bacon and maple syrup would work.

Cinnamon, banana and dates/prunes. Love how the banana goes all warm and melty!

HarmoniousHumbug · 17/11/2025 17:19

I went through a phase of not wanting breakfast as a teen.

DM used to hide a chopped banana and a small bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk at the bottom of the bowl of porridge.

I’ve eaten breakfast ever since!

pumpkinscake · 17/11/2025 17:36

Cooked in water with a little salt, then served with milk. Hate sweet porridge!
