I love a good food ideas thread on mumsnet so thought I'd start my own.

I've started having porridge in the morning - made with milk but in the microwave due to time. I'm mainly stirring in fruit but I'd love to hear any other ideas. The quicker/less effort the better as I'm also doing breakfast for the DC at the same time. Though any more indulgent/more effort ones welcome for the weekend.

Friend topped her porridge with Bailey's all through the pandemic. Cream, alcohol and sweetness all in one. And it's only £11 a litre in Sainsbury's atm.

No words except 🤤🤤

Maybe at Christmas

I think of pudding, and try to replicated, so:
Black forest - small amount of cocoa in porridge, Black cherries, cherry jam and a bit of nutella on top
Apple crumble: nutella, grated Apple and sultana in the porridge
Bannoffee: cinnamon in porridge, banana and a drizzle of toffee sauce on top
Rhubarb/plum and custard: mixed spiced in porridge, stewed Rhubarb or plum with a spoonful of custard
Peach melba: chopped Peach and raspberry coulis on top
Mango and coconut: coconut in the porridge, Mango coulis on top

ALWAYS with one tbsp of single cream, usually eaten the morning after a fast day 😇

I make porridge overnight in the slow cooker- something enormously comforting about waking to a pot of smooth, creamy oats.
toppings/ additions: dates, blueberries, banana, honey, cinnamon, chopped apple, maple syrup, pecans, nutmeg, sultanas, flaxseeds, tahini, chopped pear,

Do you have a very big family or a very small slow cooker?

I do like the sound of Baileys, might try that over Xmas.

Donthefrunk · 14/11/2025 07:32

Muscovado sugar with pumpkin seeds or banana or Tesco's finest pistachio spread if I'm feeling particularly decadent.

Cooroo · 14/11/2025 07:44

Slice banana in before cooking so it goes gooey and melts in. I swear by a teaspoon of turmeric! Yoghurt on top is essential.
I may also add grated fresh ginger, stewed apple and blackberries, cardamom seeds.

I ads chia seeds and flax seeds every day because I think its healthier, even if not.

Other things I add- grated apple, cinnamon, sultanas, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, prunes, dried apricots, cooked fruits, coconut milk, mixed spices, ginger, sprinkle with granola, crumbled ginger flapjack, mixed seeds.

I shove whichever combo in a little pot with milk, take to work and cook for about 1 minute at work.

Dollop of marmalade and a few crushed cardamom seeds.

Bonne Maman caramelised apple spread

Boopear · 14/11/2025 08:05

i roast the walnuts in the oven (takes about 10mins) before having them on the porridge. Plus fruit, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and dollop of Greek yogurt. Oh, I also do nutmeg and cinnamon but add turmeric. Also use coconut milk to make the porridge. .😋

Oooh rhubarb and vanilla @katypop

ViaRia01 · 14/11/2025 08:10

We do fruity and sweet. So banana with desiccated coconut, or grated apple with cinnamon and sugar, or raspberries and a few small white chocolate chips.

I'm wondering now about trying a pina colada porridge with pineapple and coconut 🤔

chia seeds (or mixed seeds), raisins and a sprinkle of ground mixed spice is nice on a cold morning.

But really I have to agree with @SparklyGlitterballs about the dollop of nutella!

Nigellastwinklylights · 14/11/2025 09:35

Jumbo oats cooked in milk ( or just oats and Greek yogurt) and then topped with frozen cherries, flaked almonds and pomegranate molasses (which I picked up in a Turkish duty free many years ago). Delish!.

ludge · 14/11/2025 10:14

I add frozen blueberries with the oats and milk before microwaving - unbelievably delicious!

mindutopia · 14/11/2025 13:13

Currently, I’m usually having raisins, toasted coconut (buy the bags of it, the shaved sort, not grated, in bulk), a bit of treacle and cinnamon.

I make a pot every 3-4 days, while standing in the kitchen shouting orders at everyone to get dressed and pack their bags for school and then it lasts me a a good bit of the week.

SoScarletItWas · 14/11/2025 13:25

Does anyone have any savoury ideas? Veggie for preference.

Google suggests adding mushrooms and the like which makes it some weird risotto in my head… or eggs which I can barely type without retching.

TheJustJoker · 14/11/2025 13:25

Golden Syrup or honey or Nutella, always walnuts plus blueberries and/or banana and pumpkin or mixed seeds. Tend to use plant milks too.

Tessisme · 14/11/2025 13:43

Some evil genius on here suggested a couple of squares of dark chocolate melted in after cooking and a handful of raspberries. I use frozen, but can’t remember if that was stated. Really lovely and a bit of an addiction for me for a while. I sometimes use frozen cherries instead.

My go to is grated apple, raisins and coconut.

Have just started back on the porridge after a few months of homemade cinnamon granola with blueberries and Greek yoghurt. Hard to make the break from that, but the colder mornings have given me a wee push.
