Just been to see a friend l haven't seen for ages.
( just to take her some old photos). She had 3 of her Grandkids there and was huling Strawberries.
Asked me if l wanted some.. l accepted. She divided between 5 bowls.. then got the sugar bowl and started spooning sugar on top.
I said no sugar for me please..
She looked at me as if l was mad .. handed me the bowl.
Her and three Grandkids ate their Strawberries with a good amount of sugar atop each one.
Anyone else?

Aww my nana did this when we were kids Smile I personally don't eat them with sugar as an adult but it was definitely a thing growing up!

Izzynohopanda · 17/08/2024 13:54

Growing up, we always put sugar on strawberries. However, I think the varieties you get nowadays are naturally sweeter, so don’t need it so much.

GHSP · 17/08/2024 13:55

We always had strawberries and cream with sugar as a child. I think a PP is right about today’s varieties being sweeter. I don’t think anyone is being unreasonable here.

Zonder · 17/08/2024 13:56

We always had sugar on them when my Granny prepared them. She also shoved two sugar lumps in the core of an orange for me to suck out.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 17/08/2024 13:56

Yes, strawberries and cream with sugar, beaten into the cream or just on top is pretty standard. I don't usually do it but did sprinkle a bit on last night as it was a bit sour.

BeerForMyHorses · 17/08/2024 13:56

We used to dip the in the sugar bowl.

NuffSaidSam · 17/08/2024 13:57

I wouldn't, but I'd happily eat them with sugar if someone else prepared them like that. It's a normal thing to do!

spikeandbuffy24 · 17/08/2024 13:58

Yeah sometimes I do if they're not as sweet as usual, just half a teaspoon

Murpe · 17/08/2024 13:58

I do, but I suppose it's pretty unnecessary! It's just part of my strawberry-behaviour, and that was how my mum did it. Not sprinkled though, about a tsp of caster sugar on the side, and lightly dip them.

SummerSplashing · 17/08/2024 13:59

My Grest Aunt still does this and it does bring the flavour out (especially if left to sit, not immediately before eating) however I don't do it because I eat very low carb.

Used to love sugar apples as a child!

PaminaMozart · 17/08/2024 14:01

Sugar is the work of the devil. So bad for us, and sooooo addictive.

So no, I wouldn't add sugar to any food unless it would be unpalatable without it. Definitely not strawberries.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/08/2024 14:01

I often sprinkle a teaspoon of brown sugar on mine, because I like the texture. A bit of crunch added to the softness of the strawberries.

SiobhanSharpe · 17/08/2024 14:01

Have to say i like the crunch of sugar on strawberries. And some strawberries, while not exactly sour these days, can be somewhat lacking in flavour so some sugar (less than a teaspoon ) can definitely help.
I've also read a tip saying try sprinkling balsamic vinegar which is quite sweet on sharp or under-ripe strawberries.

hexsnidgett · 17/08/2024 14:03

I remember people doing this when I was kid, but I think it ruins them. As does cream.
People used to put sugar on all sorts of stuff yuk!

SweetBirdsong · 17/08/2024 14:03

I ALWAYS dip strawberries in a bit of sugar. I put a couple of level teaspoons full in a tiny dessert dish, and dip the strawberries in. Delicious! 😋

I don't have sugar in coffee, or on my cereal, so I reckon I'm allowed!

TomeTome · 17/08/2024 14:04

yes I do that, and on bananas and cream. It’s the norm for me.

SweetBirdsong · 17/08/2024 14:05

@hexsnidgett My nana (born late 1890s,) used to have sugar sandwiches. Bread and butter and sugar! Shock

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/08/2024 14:05

Sometimes but just a tiny wee sprinkle

LadyChilli · 17/08/2024 14:05

Sometimes. A teaspoon or two over a whole punnet for a treat. I'll happily eat them without too. I also add sugar if they are about to go overripe as it preserves them.

bloodyeffinnora · 17/08/2024 14:05

I love sugar on strawberries so do my grandkids, but I don't have it often as im always on a bloody diet.

londonmummy1966 · 17/08/2024 14:07

Black pepper all the way........

UserMcNamey · 17/08/2024 14:08

My ex MIL used to do this and I never joined in.

if you have strawberries that are bland/not sweet, a bit of black pepper brings out the flavour.

Murpe · 17/08/2024 14:11

Just thinking about this, and remembering I was surprised that ex-DH put sugar on grapefruit on the rare occasions we bought one, because that's how his parents served it in the 70s/80s. When actually, sugar on sour grapefruit actually makes sense, and on sweet strawberries, doesn't at all.

GoTigers · 17/08/2024 14:12

I don’t. I have them with Greek yoghurt and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
