Just been to see a friend l haven't seen for ages.
( just to take her some old photos). She had 3 of her Grandkids there and was huling Strawberries.
Asked me if l wanted some.. l accepted. She divided between 5 bowls.. then got the sugar bowl and started spooning sugar on top.
I said no sugar for me please..
She looked at me as if l was mad .. handed me the bowl.
Her and three Grandkids ate their Strawberries with a good amount of sugar atop each one.
Anyone else?

I don’t now but when young I used to love them with icing sugar on. Not normal sugar though, too gritty. The icing sugar gives a lovely consistency when you mush it all together.

Strawberries these days just aren’t as sweet as they used to be, at least not to me. So I can understand putting sugar in them (I have a sweet tooth) but I just don’t buy them anymore unless I’m making a filling for cake or a pie.

@hexsnidgett My nana (born late 1890s,) used to have sugar sandwiches. Bread and butter and sugar! Shock

My nanna used to make me sugar and banana sandwiches!

Sugar is not the devil, its how much, what format, how often

Whilst I agree with @soupfiend Re. tge risks associated with artificial sweeteners, I strongly believe that ALL forms of ADDED sugars should be avoided whenever possible.

UPFs are full of sugars in various guises, which makes them so addictive. Sugars have no nutritional value, but they assault our taste buds, to the extent that we often struggle to taste the more subtle flavors of vegetables.

For me, staying off sugars/Artificial sweeteners has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

A tiny sprinkle of sugar works for me!

Strawberries are always nicer if you macerate them first.

We also had them sugared as kids. These days I only buy British in season and eat them at room temperature, IMO when eaten this way they don’t need sugar.

As per PPs we always used to sugar cream as a child too, I don’t do that either now. Or cups of tea.

As a child in the 2000's I regularly had sliced apples with sugar on top, seems mad now and I would never give that to my kids!

I don't but occasionally have cream with them, or Greek yogurt and sometimes a tiny bit of maple syrup. We always had them with sugar growing up, and late MIL always put it on too but generally they are sweet enough as they are (we don't buy them out of season).

Butter on peas or carrots (or any green veg) ruins them, I hate it when all the veg come swimming in melted butter in restaurants, I just can't eat them, it's a shame because their natural flavours are so tasty.

So my dressing on a salad last night had 'added sugar', I added honey to sesame oil and chilli.

This is why saying 'added sugar' is a ridiculous notion and why the demonisation of sugar is unhelpful

Its the type of food, how often, how its consumed, what type of sugar that is key

Oh this reminds me of my nana. As kids we'd have bowls of strawberries with sugar on and lashing of cream. Now days I eat them with out sugar and with yogurt, i miss the ignorance of youth and being able to eat what ever I want.
