Just been to see a friend l haven't seen for ages.
( just to take her some old photos). She had 3 of her Grandkids there and was huling Strawberries.
Asked me if l wanted some.. l accepted. She divided between 5 bowls.. then got the sugar bowl and started spooning sugar on top.
I said no sugar for me please..
She looked at me as if l was mad .. handed me the bowl.
Her and three Grandkids ate their Strawberries with a good amount of sugar atop each one.
Anyone else?

Not now. As a kid we used to have them like that, but later on when getting a bit obsessed with healthy eating, the sugar went off the menu and I discovered natural sweetness instead!

KnickerlessParsons · 17/08/2024 14:14

I'm more surprised that she's hulling the strawberries rather than because she's putting sugar ok then.
Strawberries these days don't need to be hulled.

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/08/2024 14:16

Depends on the strawberries.

skyeisthelimit · 17/08/2024 14:20

my mum always did this when I was a child, but I don't do it as an adult myself

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/08/2024 14:23

I only usually buy strawberries in the summer and I make sure they're British. I hull them, slice in half and place in a shallow serving bowl with a little sprinkling of sugar. It brings out the juice a bit. My mum's always served them like this and years ago I realised hers tasted better than mine, so I switched over to doing it her way. I usually add raspberries and blueberries too (also British). My husband likes berries like this with frozen yoghourt. I have extra thick cream. Delicious. Won't be long now before the British soft fruit season is over. I'll miss them, but it's nice to have a few things that are still seasonal.

BibbityBobbityToo · 17/08/2024 14:23

I don't with British summer strawberries but may add a tiny pinch if sugar to the Spanish ones we get in the winter months.

I do remember my Gran doing this when I was little, no wonder my generation are the dentists best customers!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/08/2024 14:24

On my Mum's side of the family we serve strawberries with pouring cream and mash them with a fork before eating. I remember when I was little that we did put sugar on too but, as a pp has said, they are much sweeter now so sugar isn't really necessary.

My Dad's side of the family generally serve strawberries with whipped cream, and I think add sugar when whipping the cream.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/08/2024 14:24

The amount of sugar involved is minuscule, surely. I'd be surprised if I'm adding more than half a teaspoonful to a punnet of strawberries.

ShinyPebble32 · 17/08/2024 14:28

Next you’ll be telling us she ate a whole strawberry to herself!

dianec401 · 17/08/2024 14:28

This has brought back a memory for me! As a child, strawberries and cream over the summer months were a real treat. We always put a spoon of sugar in the cream as my mother said it helped to thicken it before whipping (which I'm sure it didn't!).
My parents even had a Waterford crystal sugar shaker which took pride of place on the table at Sunday lunch and was used to shake over the strawberries before serving. I can still remember the crunch.! Wouldn't dream of doing it now though.

WhoWhereWhatHow · 17/08/2024 14:29

My nan used to and my MIL still does put sugar on strawberries. I don't like sugar on them but love them without.

NoraLuka · 17/08/2024 14:29

Yes to sugar with strawberries, also with grapefruit, rhubarb, gooseberries and banana. I had a South American colleague (possibly from Peru but not sure) who said you should fill the hole in an avocado with sugar and then bake in the oven. I have never tried this yet but it might be quite nice.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/08/2024 14:30

My grandma used to wreck beautiful freshly picked from the garden strawberries like this. We used to try to dive in and grab them before she could spoil them.

Scampuss · 17/08/2024 14:32

No sugar on decent strawberries but bland ones can be vastly improved by hulling, halving, and adding a sprinkle of sugar and lemon juice and then leaving overnight.

Moomin37 · 17/08/2024 14:33

No I wouldn't, but like others I recall this being a thing in childhood. I eat a bowl of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and grapes daily with kefir yogurt - delicious.

tothesea · 17/08/2024 14:34

As a child we grew strawberries so ate a lot straight off the plant but as a ‘pudding’ we sometimes had them with sugar and milk..the sugary, strawberry milk at the bottom of the bowl was just heaven!

Radiatorvalves · 17/08/2024 14:34

I like to macerate strawberries with a bit of lemon juice and a v small dusting of icing sugar.

Bilbonne · 17/08/2024 14:37

I do, I put them in a bowl and sprinkle sugar on them and then leave them for about half hour to soak in.

Sherrystrull · 17/08/2024 14:39

Was she spoonjng large heaped spoons of sugar or just one spoon that was being sprinkled?

I prefer them without sugar but as a kid we always had them with a sprinkling of sugar! The best part was the sugary strawberry juice left in the bottom of the bowl!

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 17/08/2024 14:41

Used to when I was a kid, not so much now unless I'm feeling down. It's just a treat.

GigiAnnna · 17/08/2024 14:42

My grandparents used to put sugar on strawberries and orange slices. It tasted good but I don't do this for my kids as they eat enough cakes and biscuits so I want fruit to be a healthy option. They also used to drown carrots and peas in butter, which is just added fat that no one needs.

WhoWhereWhatHow · 17/08/2024 14:45

I don't think it's about being a teeny tiny and not eating sugar at all, OP is just asking of people put sugar on strawberries. I think it was more common years ago.

Doggymummar · 17/08/2024 14:47

Yes, sugar and whipped cream, Stevia these days

soupfiend · 17/08/2024 14:49

Yes a bit of sugar on them is very nice. I also put sugar on pancakes on pancake day as well

But then we dont buy cakes or biscuits that often or eat desserts as such, so a couple of teaspoons of sugar doesnt bother me at all

Im making a curry later and I'll put a bit of sugar in that too

Trinity65 · 17/08/2024 14:49

Absolutely
