Just been to see a friend l haven't seen for ages.
( just to take her some old photos). She had 3 of her Grandkids there and was huling Strawberries.
Asked me if l wanted some.. l accepted. She divided between 5 bowls.. then got the sugar bowl and started spooning sugar on top.
I said no sugar for me please..
She looked at me as if l was mad .. handed me the bowl.
Her and three Grandkids ate their Strawberries with a good amount of sugar atop each one.
Anyone else?

My grandparents used to put sugar on strawberries and orange slices. It tasted good but I don't do this for my kids as they eat enough cakes and biscuits so I want fruit to be a healthy option. They also used to drown carrots and peas in butter, which is just added fat that no one needs.

Buttery peas taste so much better, you can eat some fat without it being awful!

I get enough fat from other sources and I have to watch my weight so I'm not going to add it unnecessarily. It wouldn't be worth the calories for me.

Depends on the strawberries - most modern strains are sufficiently sweet but some are a little tart or underripe and a light sprinkling of sugar really lifts them.

Ones from the garden - never. From the shop I would try the first one to see if they needed any.

Not now. As a kid we used to have them like that, but later on when getting a bit obsessed with healthy eating, the sugar went off the menu and I discovered natural sweetness instead!

Me too. Sugar is in absolutely everything and it dulls our taste buds. Eliminate sugar and discover all the wonderful and varied tastes of fruit and vegetables.

For me, eliminating sugar has been a game changer. No more cravings, not just for sugars but all refined carbs.

Weight remains stable without even trying and food is so much more delicicious and enjoyable. And my pre-diabetes has been reversed, which is a huge relief.

I always put a bit of butter or olive oil on veg. Fat is good for vitamin absorption

Oh gosh, yes! Sugar and cream. One of the joys of summer.

Iheartmysmart · 17/08/2024 15:04

As kids we always used to have sugar on our strawberries. My dad also used to make us banana and brown sugar sandwiches. He had an incredibly sweet tooth and I remember him eating condensed milk out of the can. Sadly I’ve inherited his bad habits and love sweet stuff but am trying really hard to cut down.

steadywinner · 17/08/2024 15:05

I might add a small sprinkle if they weren't very sweet

Looking at you like you are mad is a bit of an over reaction, but sugar on strawberries is a real treat! I'm not a big fan of sweet things but sugar - particularly custard sugar - give strawberries a shiny glaze and turn the rather underwhelming moisture to a delicious syrup. Now, mind you strawberries from the supermarket has no flavour at all hence adding sugar, but in this case, I would not bother with the strawberries at the first place.
A bit of sugar is not a tragedy. Life is too short.

DiscoBeat · 17/08/2024 15:25

No! Strawberries are lovely and sweet already!

backspace2 · 17/08/2024 15:28

No I wouldn't when I was a kid we never got fresh strawberries they were always out a tin and in syrup, quite nice actually. But now I have fresh ones without sugar.

ginasevern · 17/08/2024 16:21

Yes, sugar and cream on strawberries for me please. It's one of life's little treats. I wouldn't think someone was strange for not wanting sugar (or cream) though.

That's really great that you have reversed your pre-diabetes!

I bought some yesterday and without sugar they were inedible. They were red but really hard and sour too. Some varieties are grown for their ability to travel and keep well. Taste has nothing to do with it.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 17/08/2024 16:32

Oh yes, cream and sugar on strawberries was a massive treat!

I don't have sugar now, as I tend to mix them with yoghurt. However, a while back I bought strawberries from costco and they were an American variety and soooooo bland. So I dipped them in sugar to eat them and it was delicious.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 17/08/2024 16:37

I don’t normally, but sometimes they are a bit tasteless and benefit from a little sprinkle.

InfoSecInTheCity · 17/08/2024 16:38

BeerForMyHorses · 17/08/2024 13:56

We used to dip the in the sugar bowl.

Us too, same with rhubarb when that was in season.

soupfiend · 17/08/2024 16:43

I think people getting hung up on a bit of sugar on strawberries are missing the main issue with sugar consumption which is that its in everything but not as sugar, its all the 'ose' glucose type additives. Its not from people adding a bit to strawberries and cream.

For people like that me that dont really consume those,a bit of sugar or honey is no bother at all, it doesn dull anything. I also dont eat anything, and I mean anything (which makes shopping and eat out hard) with artificial sweetners in it. I was viewed as some sort of weirdo years ago for taking that stance, now people are understaning why they are a problem (increasing need for sweetness and messing up your brain stomach communication about preparing it for sugar)

Humans like sweet things, breast milk is sweet. Sugar is not the devil, its how much, what format, how often.

And yes definitely olive oil or butter on veg please

@hexsnidgett My nana (born late 1890s,) used to have sugar sandwiches. Bread and butter and sugar! Shock

I was born in 1972 and had sugar sandwiches! I tell my kids about it and they look at me with horror! I used to put sugar on strawberries but there's no need now, especially with English strawberries when in season.

mathanxiety · 17/08/2024 17:02

This was not at all unusual years ago.
Strawberries mashed with sugar and cream, raspberries ditto.

When I was a child, DM used to put out a little bowl of sugar for us to dip bananas into and eat. Also sugar for raw rhubarb spears. Apples were also dipped (we grew bramley pippins, which were probably too tart to eat without a little sweetener).

If I buy strawberries these days, I sprinkle a little sugar over them when I'm down to the last of the punnet. Nice with Greek yogurt.

mathanxiety · 17/08/2024 17:03

@soupfiend

Agree!

ISawAMouse · 17/08/2024 17:05

I used to have them with sugar on them but as I’ve got older I find them sweet enough as they are.

Ponderingwindow · 17/08/2024 17:05

sometimes

i ate a bowl last night without sugar and they were delicious.

occasionally they are not very sweet or flavorful and sugar can save them.

other times, strawberries can form the base of a really decadent dessert. Some sugar, preferably brown, and maybe even a dollop of clotted cream.

Candleabra · 17/08/2024 17:06

Yes I always do, even though they don’t really need sugar. I prefer the taste and think it’s a nicer treat.

Chewbecca · 17/08/2024 17:07

We did as children but not anymore. Unsure if my taste has changed or the strawberries.

We didn’t have sugar sandwiches but we did have golden syrup sandwiches for Sunday tea. Yum!
