Just been to see a friend l haven't seen for ages.
( just to take her some old photos). She had 3 of her Grandkids there and was huling Strawberries.
Asked me if l wanted some.. l accepted. She divided between 5 bowls.. then got the sugar bowl and started spooning sugar on top.
I said no sugar for me please..
She looked at me as if l was mad .. handed me the bowl.
Her and three Grandkids ate their Strawberries with a good amount of sugar atop each one.
Anyone else?

My mum always did this and strawberry sandwiches sliced with sugar - so much nicer but yeah not good for you 😂

BeaRF75 · 17/08/2024 17:14

Yes, because it's how I was always given strawberries as a child. And it tastes nice.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 17/08/2024 17:32

I don't, much to the surprise of DP.

However, I also like salt and vinegar on chips and would always refuse a dessert in favour of all of the cheese (maybe a couple of dates or some grapes to go with them). DD2 was always more like me than DD1, who couldn't eat anything that had an element of sourness; didn't like yoghurt, wouldn't touch a grapefruit, couldn't stand lemon cake, said that vinegar burned. DD1's tastes matched her father's.

If you look at it another way, some people are Haribo Sourmix and some are Starmix. Your friend and her family were Starmix people, you're a Sourmix through and through.

We used to as kids (but don't now). We also used to get sticks of raw rhubarb from the garden and an egg cup of sugar to dip them in, which was delicious!

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2024 17:50

Yes I put sugar on mine. Not a lot though.

I think people getting hung up on a bit of sugar on strawberries are missing the main issue with sugar consumption which is that its in everything but not as sugar, its all the 'ose' glucose type additives. Its not from people adding a bit to strawberries and cream.

For people like that me that dont really consume those,a bit of sugar or honey is no bother at all, it doesn dull anything. I also dont eat anything, and I mean anything (which makes shopping and eat out hard) with artificial sweetners in it. I was viewed as some sort of weirdo years ago for taking that stance, now people are understaning why they are a problem (increasing need for sweetness and messing up your brain stomach communication about preparing it for sugar)

Humans like sweet things, breast milk is sweet. Sugar is not the devil, its how much, what format, how often.

And yes definitely olive oil or butter on veg please

Agreed on all points! I also loathe artificial sweeteners. I'd rather have something that wasn't sweet, as I don't have a particularly sweet tooth. Plain water every time over a drink full of aspartame.

I wouldn't, but I'd happily eat them with sugar if someone else prepared them like that. It's a normal thing to do!

Same here. My DM often put sugar on ours as kids. I don't see the need but I know it's pretty common and I would still eat and enjoy them if given them with sugar on.

DuesToTheDirt · 17/08/2024 18:02

Yes I often put sugar on, and it's best if they're left to sit in the sugar for a little while before you eat them. Usually I'd taste a bit of one to decide whether they need sugar or not.

Sgtmajormummy · 17/08/2024 18:10

I remember an 1970s advert for Silver Spoon sugar, a closeup of fresh strawberries with granulated sugar raining down on them.
You wouldn’t see that nowadays…

I make a syrup with lemon juice and sugar if I’m chopping and macerating strawberries but fresh ones just get rinsed and eaten like sweets.

DragonFly98 · 17/08/2024 18:11

Yes always with sugar it's normal same as bananas.

AdaColeman · 17/08/2024 18:16

🍓 Yes, l sometimes put a sprinkle of sugar on strawberries,
🍓 ....or a grind of black pepper or pepper syrup,
🍓 ....or a dash of balsamic vinegar.
🍓 Or sometimes I drizzle over strawberry liqueur!

What a wild and dangerous life I live! 🍓 🍓 🍓 🍓 🍓

Mypoorbody · 17/08/2024 18:18

Yes if they aren’t sweet.

Itsasintokillamockingbird · 17/08/2024 18:50

I always had strawberries in milk and sugar when I was a child in the 70s. Now I sprinkle Xylitol on them, although I know they don't really need any extra sweetener.

caringcarer · 17/08/2024 19:03

My MiL puts sugar on strawberries. I can't stand crunchy sugar on mine. A drop of pouring cream is more to my liking. I think it's more an old people thing.

heidihigh · 17/08/2024 19:05

Ah this has just unlocked a childhood memory. My grandma always used to serve us strawberries with a tablespoon of sugar on the side to dip into. Smile. I don't have sugar with strawberries as an adult but I don't think I'd be horrified if someone served them to me that way!

Saschka · 17/08/2024 19:07

We put lemon juice on ours!

Justleaveitblankthen · 17/08/2024 19:12

I've never heard of this with Strawberries before.

I used to cut oranges into quarters and dip them in a sugar, though i knew it wasn't healthy, even as a young child.

BashfulClam · 17/08/2024 19:14

A small amount of black pepper. The heat enhances the sweetness.

Mysterian · 17/08/2024 19:14

Yes. It's how we used to eat them in the old days. We also used to eat brown sugar sandwiches, and also golden syrup sandwiches too. And dip fresh rhubarb in sugar to eat.

flyinghen · 17/08/2024 19:17

I really want a bowl of strawberries with sugar and evaporated milk now. Oh childhood memories!

Skybluepinky · 17/08/2024 19:20

@hexsnidgett My nana (born late 1890s,) used to have sugar sandwiches. Bread and butter and sugar! Shock

My Gran used to make these for me (I'm 47), they were delicious 😋

bluecomputerscreen · 17/08/2024 19:23

we do that when the strawberries are past their best. it sort of draws out the juice.

TinaYouFatLard · 17/08/2024 19:26

I wouldn’t add sugar for my own DC but it was completely the norm when I was a kid. We even used to sneak a Tupperware pot of sugar when we went strawberry picking so we could eat our fill while we picked - again, not something I would ever allow my own children to do! I remember my mum scrubbing the stains from around our mouths before we went to pay for our punnets.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 17/08/2024 19:27

That takes me back. Seems mad/gross now, doesn’t it?
