Do you like marmalade?

Do you like marmalade? I read somewhere recently that it's not as popular as it used to be especially with younger people and sales are down from what they were a few decades ago. Our kids - late teens, early twenties hardly touch it.

I've always loved it particularly the dark, bitter Seville orange variety with chunky bits of peel. I think I got that from my dad who was a big fan of Chivers Olde English Marmalade.

I've recently been working my way through a pot of Sicilian Blood Orange marmalade which was just delicious. I don't have it every day as I like to vary breakfasts a bit but marmalade on thickly buttered toast with a mug of tea on a winter's morning - heavenly!

I love it!

esmeisa · 11/12/2023 21:56

Love marmalade. My late FIL used to make his own. I miss his marmalade

MammaWeasel · 11/12/2023 21:58

I prefer marmalade to jam

Gloriousgardener11 · 11/12/2023 21:59

Yes, I love it as well on hot buttered toast and also on crumpets.
My adult children don’t get the appeal so I’m not surprised sales are down.

coldcallerbaiter · 11/12/2023 21:59

Hate it

stayathomer · 11/12/2023 21:59

I love marmalade but make sure not to have it too much or I get tired of it! I definitely got the love of it from my dad as well and love nothing more than toast with butter and marmalade and a good cup of tea!!

VesperLind · 11/12/2023 22:01

Love it. Make my own and my own jam. My adult kids like jam but not marmalade.

ExpensiveDecorations · 11/12/2023 22:01

No, I'm in my 50s and have always hated it, as do my parents and DH's. My DB and DH like it, DH makes his own but our teen DCs hate it too. I like jam but wouldn't have that on toast either, only with yogurt, cake or scones.

Misstabithabean · 11/12/2023 22:01

My 6 year old likes it!

HomburgandTrilby · 11/12/2023 22:03

I loathe it. It strikes me as a weird English breakfast perversion, like kedgeree.

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/12/2023 22:04

Love it. But I only really like my mum's homemade.

Jojoanna · 11/12/2023 22:06

Love it .

Which brand is your one?

I like marmalade, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find a nice commercial & thanks to Mumsnet (hearing how unhygienic some people are) I'm no longer willing to buy it at local markets etc

@dizzydizzydizzy

i implore you to keep a copy of her recipe safe & spend time making it with her, learn all her tips & techniques!!

Getabloominmoveon · 11/12/2023 22:10

I love it and make loads with Seville oranges in January. My kids don’t like it but lots of friends are v happy to have a jar.
I also love the ritual of making it.

Justleaveitblankthen · 11/12/2023 22:12

Love it.
Didn't like it as a child.
Now I love anything tangy, bitter, dark or spicy.
I could almost eat a raw lemon 😁

ToThineOwnSelf · 11/12/2023 22:13

Love it! My mum makes it to an old family recipe. I have it for breakfast on Stockan’s thick oatcakes. I need to take on the baton of making it

happysunr1se · 11/12/2023 22:18

I love it!

I don't eat breakfast so don't really eat bread/toast that much but as a special treat I love a piece of wholewheat toasted, wait for it to cool down then marmalade, a dark one with lots of rind and then clotted cream on top, delicious, better than cream tea!

GellerYeller · 11/12/2023 22:24

My favourite is M and S Ruby Red Grapefruit Marmalade. On toast, crumpets, water crackers, any will do me. Especially good on a Ryvita or an old school ‘Dutch crispbake’ IMHO.
Happy memories of my grandad making ever so slightly too well done toast in front of the fire using my grandma’s home made bread. Straight from fork to plate and slathered in butter, with a generous dollop of lime marmalade.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/12/2023 22:25

I like it, obviously. I make my own, using Seville oranges, and don't overdo the sugar. I keep spare oranges in the freezer for emergencies. It's the only sugar I ever eat, just about, and not daily..

OldTinHat · 11/12/2023 22:26

I make my own. Love it! I'll do a batch and share it out.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/12/2023 22:27

Try wholemeal bread (heavy), peanut butter instead of butter, and a teaspoon of marmalade on top!

OldTinHat · 11/12/2023 22:28

Actually, I'd like to have a go at making a cake with marmalade. Does anyone have a good recipe?

Museum10665 · 11/12/2023 22:28

not my cuppa tea

mondaytosunday · 11/12/2023 22:34

Love it but fine peel for me! Hate lemon curd though 🤢.
